Title: Testing time for HIV ? Time to rule out infection?
Post by: j.heine80 on February 15, 2009, 03:29:49 pm
Hello to all.
What is the time at which infection can be ruled out, since I had vaginal sex with a girl without a condom, do not know if the girl is positive or negative and have no way to locate it.
I have made HIV testing:
15 days P24 Antigen Test Negative (antigen alone, is not a elisa)
30 days P24 Antigen Test Negative (antigen alone, is not a elisa)
6 Weeks Elisa Test Negative 4th Generation
3 Months Elisa Test Negative 4th Generation
4 Months Elisa Test Negative 4th Generation
5 Months Elisa Test Negative 4th Generation

In total 6 tests all negative, I was researching on the Internet where there are articles of up to 12 months, but I am tired of so many tests ... I need to know how safe are the tests until the 5 months or if I can definitely confirm that I have not infected .. I ask your help, last Friday (past 12months) I made an additional test and tomorrow afternoon, give me the results, so that there is likely to be negative for 12 months after a negative to 5 months? i am worried about late seroconversion, what is the last - long time for seroconversion.
Please help meeee... i am very worried.

Sorry for my english.

Thank you very much
Jorge.

Jorge, you can relax. You have reliably tested negative for HIV. That's nonsense you were told or read elsewhere about having to test beyond 3 months after a risky incident.

It's not necessary to test beyond 3 months except in very rare circumstances such as extensive IV drug use or a severely impaired immune system due to organ transplant or cancer treatment. I am assuming none of those apply to you, in which case I repeat, you're HIV negative.

So now that you have safely made it through this time, learn from this experience. Make sure that everytime you have either vaginal or anal intercourse, and with no exceptions, you are always wearing a latex condom.

Get on with your life.

Cheers.

Hi Mr. Andy.
Thanks a lot for your very quickly response.
Yes i am a healthy 30 years old men.
But, in the private laboratory say me ... in anycase i need a confirmation or follow up test at 12 months for an extreme confirmation... this is true? or with a 5 months i have an extreme confirmation for my negative status?
I hope tomorrow my negative result... i am very worried for the result.
Thanks for your comments...
Jorge.

No, you don't need a 12 month test....that's outdated information. The US FDA says 3 months...so you were done at 3. The extra test merely confirm you don't have HIV. The gen IV test is accurate at 3 months.....so you are done.

Condoms from now on until you know their STD status, OK?

For HIV, 99.9999999999999999999% sure.

Sorry, you are asking a scientist if I am 100% sure about something. Karl Popper would turn in his grave if I said 100% sure. To give you some perspective, I am 99.99999999999999999999999% sure the sun is coming up tomorrow. Nothing is 100% sure - ever.

Yet you are hanging on here and are still concerned about HIV after testing negative for 5 months - so I am going to ask you to do something that will help you. I don't wish to sound mean, but after you collect your negative result tomrrow - try and resist coming back to this forum. I don't mean that in a "you aren't welcome" sort of way, but I feel that this forum is not helping you realize that you are HIV negative. We all already know this after 5 months of testing. The fact that you are hanging on to this test result makes me worry that you don't know this. The negative result will make you happy for a while - maybe a day, a week or 2. But the main problem you have here is not HIV but the fear of HIV.

We have told you what we know. Any further discussion should be with a doctor who knows your case.

So promise after this last test you won't come here to discuss issues around HIV. Repeat testing beyond the window period is not required. So don't test anymore.

Spend your energies working on understanding that you are HIV negative and get some help with understanding that if you can't. You have to break a cycle of testing for HIV before it gets out of control. I'll let you off as you have some bad advice, but trust the good folks on this forum when they say you don't have HIV.
