just got accepted to med school
« on: March 25, 2010, 11:04:42 am »
hi guys & gals,

well...just got some really great news: i got accepted to med school.

i've been a p.a. for years and had made the decision to make a forward career move just about this time last year. the application process began in june 09 and ended october 09. being a procrastinator of sorts, i had figured no problem...i had all summer to work on the apps & submit them in time. then in late july, my world stopped short by the hiv bomb: a positive orasure result. i was wb confirmed hiv poz by mid-august. i was scared, alone and didn't know what i was going to do..you all know the deal. the thing that i learned from so many of you, my case worker and my therapist was that i was going to be okay. ultimately, i pulled myself up by the jockstrap, got those apps completed, interviewed last month and here i am.

i must admit, it's a weird paradox... i first have to first check ryan white & adap availability in a new state, before i can accept the offer. does anyone know the best way to find that out?

anyway, i wanted to say thanks to all of you for bravely sharing your stories and providing me with the inspiration to carry on. in turn, i hope that mine will help do the same for someone else.

blessings.

max

Congrats, Max.

You can get a feel for the income criteria with ADAP on a state-by-state basis from this link:

http://www.statehealthfacts.org/comparemaptable.jsp?cat=11&ind=543

However, obviously it states it's only current through June, 2008 so you'll need to also go to the Dept. of Health (or that's what most states have handle these programs) of whatever state you are relocating to.

Yeah call them and be certain, I could swear Alabama did say it had a waiting list you should definitely fill your prescription in your current state right before you make the move.  If you do think you may run out of meds come on here and see if anyone has some spare.  You could also potentially get an ASO to maybe help you out with a one month prescription just to get you by.  What part of Alabama are you moving to?

PS: We should move this thread to Living With.

i'm not on meds yet, but given that the track is four years, i want to get a feel for what their benefits are like in the event that i need to get on meds before graduation. i'd rather not go into this blindly and then have a problem later on. i'm going to check with my local aso case manager...she may have some info.

i realized that i should've posted in living with right after hitting the post button...i sent ann a pm requesting help already ;)

Congrats. This is a good example showing that life goes on after an HIV diagnosis.  Let this be a nice lesson to those who freak out and/or stop pursuing their goals.

Good luck. Make us proud, future doc.

So what you're saying is I shouldn't stop pursuing my goal of sleeping with every attractive man in America just becauseI'm poz?

like that would stop you, little slut.  You're probably coming back with a vengeance.

Oh, and Max... I meant to say that as well: be sure to sleep with with whatever hot doctors you meet out there, Grey's Anatomy style.

Maybe you can be the next Dr. Gallant. You know that some of these queens in here will showing up at your practice on a daily basis.

He wouldn't really even need to actually treat people.  He could just answer questions and charge by the minute on-line.

I do the same thing on Skype as a psychiatrist with the name Dr. Gardenia Merriweather.

phil, there's nothing better than a happy bottom cracking a smile...

Maybe you can be the next Dr. Gallant.

those would be some mighty big shoes to fill...

He wouldn't really even need to actually treat people.  He could just answer questions and charge by the minute on-line.

I do the same thing on Skype as a psychiatrist with the name Dr. Gardenia Merriweather.

lol...brilliant!!! love you, ms p ;)

Congrats and Good luck.

It would make sense to me that being a med student,  the school would provide some kind of Med insurance.

Alabama, although I haven't checked, probably has a pretty low income bar for ADAP. At least most other Deep South schools seem to. I don't know how the rules pertain to a Grad Student. Perhaps you'd keep your Homer State residency, whatever that is.

All these things should be able to get facts fom the State Health, the school health, ot other such agency,

How did you get your meds as a PA? Maybe Cobra could kick in for awhile.

Whatever you have to do, I'd look at it as another hurdle to get over until you start practicing, at which point you'll be able to work your way out of any debt accrued.

It's very inspiring that you're going to med school.

If I were you I'd look at the insurance options offered by the school since most universities require that health insurance be part of the package. It's worth checking out if there are different plans to choose from and what they cover, especially as far as Rx.

If they don't cover everything, many times ADAP can step in to help for those who are underinsured.

AL ADAP does not appear to have a waiting list for now at least:

hi hope,

thank you. i think that you should seriously consider it. holders of masters of public health degrees here in the us currently have a unique & desired title. go for it!

max

Congrats and Good luck.

thanks poz. yes, school insurance will be mandatory...something i plan to check out soon. thats great to hear that the income bars in the southern states is low...i probably won't be working while in school. i'm not currently on meds yet...im pretty recently infected and am waiting to see what my trend looks like before starting them. agreed, the debt will be what it is...i'll worry about all that later lol

max

Way to go, Max! Onward and upward and by the way, me wants 'scripts too!!! ;D

that's right ann, it's been a hard past 8 months, but i'm getting there and have to keep moving forward. thanks again for all that you do in the community!

max,

Best of luck to you.

v

ps: whatever happened to the kd241 trial (or was it 247?)? Haven't heard much about it.

thanks v! we'll see about that ;)  the kd trial unfortunately did not work out. while the trial rep explained that there were no significant health risks, my further investigation of the trial revealed that the drug had been tested before. in a nutshell, it had been scrapped because of its potential for inducing mutations that could possibly make hiv medical management a nightmare. needless to say, i didn't find that very appealing or worth my taking the risk ;(

hi sid and thanks! theres no such thing as a stupid question. i have a case manager through my local doh, where i've been getting my lab testing done through.

Congratulations,

Thanks inch! yes, it was a big decision in light of all, but one that i'm glad i made. agreed, i plan to check out insurance options in the near future, as the schools begins sending me all of its incoming student docs. thanks for the info and link! as said,  i want to ensure that i have all my info ducks in a row regarding adap, in the event that i need to go that route while in med school, as financial resources will be extremely limited  :o
