Too bad the Chesapeake House is no longer there.  (9th and H NW).  Those boys sure knew how to shake it... but the problem is you really did not want to be near stage because distance and darkness really did a lot for them.

If you want a slice of local legend, head to Ben's Chili Bowl like all of the politicians do.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben's_Chili_Bowl

ps: now that Commander Salamander closed a couple years ago the entire city is a mere ghost of it's former self

And this is a bit geeky of me I realize, but for something off the beaten path but always easy to get to physically, the Map Room of the Library of Congress often has interesting exhibits.  Also, if you find yourself in the vicinity of Ford's Theatre, around the corner is the often overlooked National Portrait Gallery (part of Smithsonian, just not on the Mall with the majority of the buildings). They did a lovely enclosure/renovation with a glass curtain-wall undulating roof by Norman Foster a few years ago and it would provide a nice respite from any hot weather before continuing on elsewhere. It's at Eighth and F Streets, NW

Oh, by the way, if you've not familiar with the way addresses are done in quadrants, or how numbered versus lettered streets are done and overlaid on state named boulevards do yourself a favor and learn it.

That is good advice.

Also if you venture to the fringes of the city and want to kinda know how far you are from the center, a general rule is that streets with one syllable names are closer in than two syllable and three.  (Cumberland Street NW would be much farther out than C street NW).  Typically the street names run through the alphabet so you would expect Porter Street to be closer to the city center than Lowell.  These rules do have exceptions but are useful if you are new to the area.  Oh and if you drive there... please remember that people already in the circle have the right of way.  That is a rule that changes from state to state and let me tell you... the DC drivers dont mind hitting your ass.

that all sounds very confusing. I think we will leave the driving up to Gary. SHOTGUN!.  I got caught in one of those circles in New Hampshire, and since they are unheard of in Texas I was stunned at what was happening, I went around like 8 times before I got the balls to make a run for an exit, by that time I was so dizzy that I missed the exit and drove over the island taking out the suspension of the rental car we were driving.

Good times.

Barbara please -- we even have them in rural areas. Get with the program.

Oh, and in Killadelphia we have Logan Square, which we also call Logan Circle, because it's a traffic circle within a square park :)

I guess I won't be driving.  I don't even know what you guys are talking about.  If I do, I'll either take the F250, Crew Cab Ram, or any other functional trucks that will automatically give me the right of way.  They really don't want to fight a Ram with a beamer do they?  I'll take a right of way when I need.  Or, I'll just fly now that I'm no longer afraid.  Already done the research, and it still amazes me that flying is cheaper than driving.....and I'm certain it's quicker.  Hell, I can air the shocks up in the S10 and freak them all out.  They'd look at that thing and assume it's not insured.  Another way of getting a right of way.

Traffic circles (roundabouts for our friends across the pond) are not all that difficult to navigate.  Although, when you have to go into them the wrong way like the British do, it can get a little hairy.  Just put your big girl panties on and you will all do fine.

Same here Ray, we will be driving to D.C. from ABQ, we did the math, and to fly it's about the same money-wise, the only difference between flying, we would get there a lot faster, it will take us about
2 days, but it will be FUN taking I-40 all the way to VA. (unless Bob changes his mind) sometimes we agree just to disagree , however I'm sure we'll come to some agreement by then, (I'm still working on him)  ;)

I plan to drive there.  My only dilemma is that I am also going on a cruise for my birthday this year (early Aug) and funds will be tight.  I plan to attend but will be staying with friends to offset the costs.  Its just a little over one tank of gas for me to get there from here so I am sure I can swing that part.

Well, I don't know about punctual , , ,  ;)

I am taking Amtrak to DC. I know that will come as a surprise to nobody, but I thought I would throw that out

I have already printed the map with the metro route from Union Station to the hotel. It sounds and looks simple.

Now, I am going to research some gluten-free friendly restaurants.

yes, traffic circles are definitely not a Southern thing. I never saw one before until I was in Ohio. However, we actually have two circles in my area though right now - but they are within a shopping plaza area (which must have been designed by Yankees LOL)

Its just a little over one tank of gas for me to get there from here so I am sure I can swing that part.
I'm trying to work things out to attend also. Perhaps you and I can hook up for that ride North  ;)

If you're driving up from the south, and if you've never been, you might enjoy spending a day in Williamsburg/Jamestown.

If you're driving in from points west a stop to see Monticello would be enjoyable.

Tours in D.C. : The White House

Public tours of the White House are available for groups of 4 or more people. For groups smaller than 4, we will make every effort to combine the request with other groups but we cannot guarantee availability.

Requests are accepted by our office up to six months in advance, but no less then two months in advance. These self-guided walking tours of the East Wing are available Tuesday through Saturday (excluding federal holidays) and take approximately 45 minutes to complete.

We encourage you to submit your request as early as possible since a limited number of tours are available. For the most current tour information, please call the 24-hour line at (202) 456-7041. Please note that White House tours may be subject to last minute cancellation.

Please Note:

A two months advance notice is required.
Requests may be submitted up to 6 months in advance
Requests for a White House tour MUST include Security Information.
New restrictions implemented by the U.S. Secret Service require security information to be submitted for every person requesting a tour of the White House. If you are submitting a request to tour the White House, you will need to submit every group member's first name, full middle name, last name, date of birth, Social Security Number, US Citizenship (y/n), country of citizenship (for non-US citizens), gender, and city and state of current residence.

If there is any security information missing from your request, we will be unable to submit the White House tour request, and no tour will not be granted.

Please keep in mind that the security information submitted for each group member must match his or her government identification presented upon entering the White House.

Due to the volume of requests, the White House is often fully booked several months in advance.

Anyone driving up from the South -- I am about 1 mile off Rt. 95 in Richmond (exit 83B).  Depending on timing, as I plan to attend too, perhaps you can swing by for a break and a dip in the pool.

It sounds so far away, but will be here before you know it.  Especially for me -- a very busy year for travels and the wedding in September!

Well one wouldn't really be surprised to hear that you were a Bottom queen.......

While I always loved living in a "city" -- Richmond hardly qualifies.  The nice part of the 'burbs' -- I always have a place to park and I get to have a pool in the backyard.  So, next time you are in the area, let me know -- pool is open from mid-April thru mid-Oct.

Girl please -- I know you want that cheeseburger from chef Danny Meyer's Shake Shack (plus it's just a block south of Dupont Circle). All the rage in NYC for the past 7 years! We're finally getting our first one in Filthy this year.

You can also go to Bobby Flay's Burger Palace at 2121 K Street, NW for a taste contest, five blocks from Shake Shack.

We've got a Shake Shack on South Beach here - it is great - so, I will have to check it out when in D.C.

Also, the Billy Goat Tavern - which I mentioned in earlier post - is the chain (started in Chicago) where Saturday Night Live's "Cheezborger! Cheezborger! No fries, cheeps! No Pepsi, Coke!"? was born.... I ate and drank there when I was in D.C. in November and their burgers are pretty good (simple, but good). Cozy little place to have a drink and close to the Capital (Judiciary Square Metro or Union Station) - on New Jersey Ave. http://billygoattavern.com/

Hey Gang,

I have been doing some research and I came up with a few eating establishments that are gluten-free friendly.

Anyone know anything about any of these?

Bertucci's (Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom),

Legal Seafoods (Chinatown),

Morton's (Downtown and Georgetown),

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse (Downtown and Dupont Circle),

Uno Chicago Grill (Union Station).

And, by region:

DOWNTOWN:

The Capital Grille

Jaleo

Zengo

CHINATOWN:

Oyamel Cocina Mexicana

Zaytinya

WOODLEY PARK:

Lebanese Taverna

And don't forget about the CUPCAKE scene in DC:

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS:

Sticky Fingers Bakery

DUPONT CIRCLE:

Hello Cupcake

Red Velvet Cupcakery

PENN QUARTER

Red Velvet Cupcakery

And someone else suggested:

Pete's APizza

Hi Mark:
A bunch of the one's you have listed are national chains and not specific to D.C.; however, I did go through your list and put some info about the ones that I know about --- See bold highlights below:

Bertucci's (Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom), - chain restaurant - good food and reasonable prices, they do get fairly crowded, so expect a bit of a wait (especially for dinner)

Legal Seafoods (Chinatown), - chain restaurant - I haven't been to the one in D.C. - but the one in Fort Lauderdale (Sawgrass Mills Mall) is pretty good - I'm not a big fan

Morton's (Downtown and Georgetown), chain restaurant - the Chicago original - extremely pricey - great steaks, but be prepared to pay around $60 per person  (and that's if you only have one drink) - very distinguished crowd - but not a D.C. powermover crowd, as they are more likely to be at Capital Grille or one of the many well known neighborhood steakhouses (i.e. The Monocle)

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse (Downtown and Dupont Circle), - chain restaurant - great steaks and seafood - but also very pricey - about the same cost as Morton's (maybe slightly less) - and not as pretentious of a crowd - more "homelike."

Uno Chicago Grill (Union Station). - standard pizza chain restaurant - unique pizza - people either love it or hate it - it is one of the many restaurants in Union Station - The Center Cafe is actually a better place to eat and you can sit above the floor area and look out from all directions across the rotunda of the station (ate there in November) - if you check out the link, it gives a good perspective of the restaurant: http://www.unionstationdc.com/store/center-cafe-restaurant/2137040097/2138814770; another good one is Thunder Grill (gets a large crowd, but has plenty of seating  slightly pricey); Potbelly's is good for sandwiches (not sure if they have a gluten free menu or not)

And, by region:

DOWNTOWN:

The Capital Grille - chain restaurant - used to draw a very distinguished crowd and was the place to see and be seen - but has lost a lot of that as the franchise has grown (The Monocle is a DC staple where you almost always run into a Senator/Congressperson, etc.) - VERY EXPENSIVE - last time boss and I ate there (she was paying) the tab for two of us (with no alcoholic drinks) including tip was $160. A la carte for any items you want other then the steak that is on your plate (with average steak running around $45 and sides from $8-$10 each: http://www.thecapitalgrille.com/menus/D3_DinnerA.pdf

Jaleo  - don't know anything about

Zengo - don't know anything about

CHINATOWN:

Oyamel Cocina Mexicana - don't know anything about

Zaytinya

WOODLEY PARK: - great area, lots of good restaurants to satisfy most any palate; http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/7/654/DC/Woodley-Park-restaurants

Lebanese Taverna - don't know anything about; I've been to Open City and liked it - great enclosed patio dining experience

And don't forget about the CUPCAKE scene in DC:

COLUMBIA HEIGHTS:

Sticky Fingers Bakery

DUPONT CIRCLE:

Hello Cupcake

Red Velvet Cupcakery

PENN QUARTER

Red Velvet Cupcakery

And someone else suggested:

Pete's APizza - I've heard of Pete's but have never eaten there - looks interesting: http://petesapizza.com/vegetarian_vegan_gluten-free.html

Don't know anything about the cupcake places - I'm not a big sweet eater   ;)

I would not call the Capitol Grille a chain restaurant.  When I lived in DC area (1990-1994) it was one of my favorite late night places.  There was a cheaper "pub" menu and one of the memorable items was their burger.  One time I sat next the George Stephanapolous at the bar around 11:30 at night.  One frequently spots White House staff there.  The dinner menu is pricey though....

We have a Capital Grille here in Philly, directly across from the Ritz Carlton and City Hall. However, I'd never eat there. Talk about a lack of creativity on the menu. Reminds of a hotel restaurant, though upper end.

I would not call the Capitol Grille a chain restaurant.

I guess I see restaurants that have more than 20 or so restaurants in multiple states chain restaurants - doesn't mean that it isn't good food - but judging by the map the CG has locations in a great many states and cities - with multiple locations in some cities...  Back in the early 90s, I would definitely not have categorized it as a chain - it has lost a bit of its "originality" and "distinguishability" (is that even a word - lol) since it greatly expanded.
http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2009/03/16/daily58.html

Not that it is a "reliable" source, but wikipedia uses the same term to describe the restaurant. Also, it is owned by Darden Restaurants - they also own and operate Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, and Seasons52.

BTW, I think I could give some of the finer steakhouses a run for their money....
Tonight's dinner...
A 16 ounce T-Bone steak - seasoned and marinated for 19 hours, then broiled, served with perfectly sauteed onions and mushrooms on top, with seasoned, steamed green peas, and macaroni and cheese.  YUM YUM.  I think this would go for about $65-$70 at one of D.C.'s finer steakhouses   ;D

My bad!  The restaurant I am referring to is "The Old Ebbitt Grill" and it is around the corner from the White House.  The Capital Grille is a national (and overpriced if you ask me) chain and not very imaginative.

The Old Ebbitt Grill is a bit more reasonable and you never know when a White House celebrity or staffer may be in there.  Google "Old Ebbitt Grill" to read more about it.

Perhaps that's why I get on well with all those Leo's mentioned.  I'm the cancer sign and Leo's are supposedly our most compatible.

Here are some of my personal favorites/suggestions which may be mentioned by others:

1) Dukem (Ethiopian Food): communal eating without utensils, but spicy food.

2) Ping Pong Dim Sum (a little pricey, basically Chinese tapas dishes, but yummy): one new location in Dupont Circle and one by Gallery Place Chinatown.

3) Ben's Chilli Bowl (always packed though, so stand in line...and sometimes, the line is almost 2 blocks long if you consider how it also goes inside the restaurant)

4) Rosemary thyme (one of my favorite brunch places off 18th and S St NW)

5) Perry’s (drag brunch, funnest place with all you can eat breakfast on the weekends)

6) Circa (off Dupont Circle)

7) Hank's Oyster bar (off of 17th/gay street and R St?)

8) Gallery Place Chinatown has some very nice restaurants too as well as the Verizon Center (e.g. Rosa Mexicano, Matchbox Pizza, Clyde's)

Some things to do besides the sight seeing/touring:
1) Odyssey cruise along the Potomac around key DC points of interest (i.e. Jefferson/Lincoln Memorials, Washington Monument, Watergate hotel). Can accommodate groups of people and also serve food. I suggest doing this at night and the moon is out.

2) The Kennedy Center (The only thing scheduled this early on is the Addams Family)

3) Shakespeare Theater (Too early for them to list what’s showing)

4) Gay outings: Town is the biggest gay club in DC and across the street is Nellies, which is the only gay sports bar in DC and also my favorite because it's laid back and has OK food with very goodlooking servers/bartenders. 17th (aka Gay) Street has Cobalt (a club)/Level One (which is a restaurant…an ok place for brunch), several gay owned/friendly restaurants like Annies, Dupont Italian Kitchen (or DIK), and JRs (overly crowded bar).

Let me know if there's something you are particularly interested in (e.g. a specific type of food or place to go, and I may be of further assistance). Don't be surprised if I drop in on one of your outings as I haven't seen some of you in over 5 years!

Don't forget to plan a trip to Arlington National Cemetery - the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is really something to see (especially when they change the guard), also the Challenger astronaut burial site, and the JFK and RFK grave sites - check out the list of burial sites, memorials, and monuments:

http://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/VisitorInformation/MonumentMemorials.aspx

Everything at the Tomb of the Unknowns is paced at 21 seconds and timed meticulously.

I used to jog through Arlington National every evening after work when stationed at Fort Myer VA, which borders the cemetery.

Really something to see. Iowa Jima Memorial is also close by

Phil,  both Hubby Bob & I would love to go see this, let's see if we can get a few people ( those who would like to see this) @ AMG D.C. 2012, if not we'd be more than happy to accompany you @ the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier  ;) I think all US service Vets past & present , as well as anyone else should see this  :)

No problem Dennis -
We can probably let people know a day and time we will be going - the Metro actually has a stop at Arlington Cemetery.

I grew up there and don't even remember ever going to ANC, but then I hate America.  I'm sure my parents took me as a kid and I just don't remember it.

If the weather is nice you can probably just as easily walk from your hotel instead of taking the subway -- you'd only be taking the subway one stop anyway and then still have to walk a ways to get to the eternal flame location. The walk from the hotel to the eternal flame is probably 1.25 miles. Plus by walking you'll get to see the Iwo Jima Memorial.

fyi: Robert E. Lee's mansion is located there, as originally this was his family estate. I know some of our Southern members that still cling to the Lost Cause might find some masturbatory satisfaction in making a pilgrimage. But just remember the view across the river looks North.

Don't know if this has been mentioned but it might be a fun day outing:

There are also nice mule-drawn boat rides that (I think) depart from Georgetown and go up the old Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. Period costumes are optional.

I think riding on the river is a great idea by Miss Philly...Being on the water on ferries or boats in such places as Seattle and San Francisco and the river ride in Mexico City were all a lot of fun and a great, interesting way to see all the sites.  I'll also never forget the boat ride to Greenwich on the River Thames when visiting London.  So that is one thing I'd like to do in Washington.

Here's something else -- for a non-touristy thing to do, go to the Fish Market for fresh crabs w/Old Bay seasoning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Bay_Seasoning) (if you don't know what that is look it up -- very Chesapeake/Mid-Atlantic region culinary item). You can get them by the bag and just eat them there at an outdoor table -- you order them by gender and though the females are pricier you should try some of both as females have some shad in the innards. This is the kind of thing that if you don't eat it you've not really experienced the local food:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine_Avenue_Fish_Market

This is a doable walk from the Smithsonian Castle on the south side of The Mall, just go south down 10th St and when you get to the little park where the street ends you'll see the market on the other side of the road on the water.

Afterwards, if you use google-maps on your phone to guide you or you will get slightly lost, you should be able to walk to the Jefferson Memorial if you wish to. The Holocaust Museum isn't that far away either.

One thing I need to do is visit the Vietnam Memorial.

My brothers name is on that wall.  He was only 19, had served less than 6 months before he was killed.

I was in 5th grade at that time.  It was a warm autumn morning (Oct 2nd, 1967) when the doorbell rang.

I was on the couch cleaning my clarinet getting ready for school.  My mother was sitting across the room.

I went to the door and let the young soldier in.  He stood at attention and started to say:  "On behalf of the President of the United States".

He got no further.  My mom stopped him and said:  "Don't give me any speeches.  Just tell me if he's alright."

The soldiers shoulders sagged, he looked down to the floor, and then at my mother.

"No mam I'm sorry he's not.  He was shot by a sniper and didn't survive."

It was so many years ago, but to this day the memory is still very vivid in my mind.

Thank you for allowing me to put this out there.  It took me a couple of days to decide whether it was appropriate or not.

I'm so looking forward to AMG and all of it's wonderful and positive memories.
But this is something I must do.

Very touching, and such a tragedy.

Yes. You will need to go and do an outline of his name on a piece of paper ( I forget what they call that).

I would like to see the wall also.

RAB,

A sad story, indeed.
I was amazed at the powerful emotions that the Vietnam Memorial brought out in me -- and I didn't lose anyone close in that war.  It brought me to tears during my first visit.
I'm sure that the Wall will be even more emotional and meaningful to you.

Hugs,

Thanks everyone for your support.  This will be my 2nd visit to the memorial.  I sense my emotional response this time will not be so much about grieving but about disbelief/anger over what that war brought about.

Now back to the bright side, there's so many things to do and see in DC.  Heck we could spend our entire time in the Smithsonian and still not see everything.

I think someone should email President Obama and see if he'd issue a proclamation that DC welcomes AMG.   ;)

I know exactly,  believe me.

I would like to see the Vietnam Memorial also.  I only saw the miniature one, that travels around the country.

I was 19 years old, when I received my "Greetings, you are hereby ordered for induction" into the Armed Forces" from uncle Sam, Vietnam was still going on, And I was certain that I was going to end up there, but I was fortunate enough to go to Germany.

less than 5 months after I received this letter, I was officially in the Army.  And looking back now, with no regrets.

Not sure which night I will be going... but, I plan on having at least one meal (probably a lunch as it is a bit on the pricey side) at The Monacle (mentioned previously in this thread).

It is a DC staple - near The Capital complex and is where many Congressmen and Senators mingle. It is on the Senate side of the Capital.

http://www.themonocle.com/index.html

Luncheon at the bar menu:
LUNCHEON
at the Bar ...

11:30 AM to 3 PM

TO SHARE
White Beans, tossed with pesto and tomatoes, crostini / $4
Atlantic Salmon Mousse served with flatbread crackers / 7.5
Mediterranean Salad, feta, Euro cucumbers, Kalamata olives / 6
Roasted Blue Point Oysters, curried chardonnay sauce, three for / 7
French Fries with spicy mayo / 3.5

LUNCH PLATES
Twin Angus Burgers with cheddar and bacon $6.5
Filet Mignon sliced, caramelized onions and peppers, red wine reduction $12
Gulf Shrimp seared, with rocket salad, roasted red pepper dressing $11
Chicken Caesar Salad, with shaved parmigiano reggiano $12

Dinner is doubly delicious.

If anyone is interested in joining me for lunch, let me know - we can work out a day to go. Maybe before or after walking through the Capital building - checking out the Rotunda - and maybe stopping by the office of a representative or two.

30 days from today, I will be in DC - Can't wait!

If I were going to DC, I'd get in on this for sure. I've been to the Holocaust museum in Amsterdam as well as Anne Frank's house. Both were experiences not to be missed. I got chills up my spine in Anne Frank's bedroom and I teared up too. Her diary was the first "serious" book I read as a child and I've re-read it many times since. To actually stand there in the physical space she occupied was moving beyond words. We must never forget.

Jan, since you'll be there for the IAC, if you get a chance to see the quilt, you should try to do so.  But be prepared and bring a tissue / handkerchief -- it's very moving.

It's a market, not a restaurant, but most stands also cook your product there with Old Bay. It's on the waterfront and there are picnic tables there where you can go and eat it.

It's also a walkable distance from the south side of The Mall. However, make sure to either use a map or write directions down in advance as you have to walk under or over a huge freeway, and then over another 4-lane parkway.

There is actually a Metro stop pretty close to it..... I think it is the Maine Avenue stop.... I used to work near there when I lived in DC....I worked in the SW quadrant, near DC Tracks (Trax) which was in SE quadrant.... at Buzzard's Point (which is gone now, as the stadium is in that area).

The Town Danceboutique is now DC's largest gay dance club....  I will be there, most definitely.

Also the Larry Kramer play "The Normal Heart" will be at the Arena stage (Kennedy Center) through Sunday night of AMG week.  Extraordinary drama (rivals Angels in America) about AIDS in the early days.  I am seriously considering it on either Saturday or Sunday (there is a 2 pm matinee and an 8 pm evening performance both days.)

Gary

Tickets for the matinee showing of Normal Heart (some great seats) start at $45 + $7 tax/fees = $52

I'm thinking of going either Saturday or Sunday to the 2 pm performance.

Why on earth would you want to ruin perfectly good seafood with Old Bay??  Seafood should taste like seafood -- maybe with some melted butter, but not that horrid "seasoning".

I never even heard of Old Bay until I lived in Virginia, and Tina has promised me blue crabs with Old Bay when I head to Fredericksburg right after the AMG  ;D  Although I am starting to see OB in the stores more and more in San ANtonio over the past few years. But it's always like only 2 cans up on the top shelf. Isnt there a blue can and a red can?

Willywump, yes there is other cans.  There is a lemon flavor and I think a garlic flavor also, it's about the only spice I use.

Den,  Woody's in North East MD has great seafood, I know it's not DC.  I live closer to there, and since I go to school in North East I had to check it out.

Well, uh... yeah. But other than that I don't quite "get" why you think you're going to find a difficult time locating seafood in the first place by just winging it. Hello, it's on almost every menu on the east coast.

Do you eat sushi? This is your opportunity to take it raw.

I found a Joe's Crab Shack | Seafood Restaurants  in Fairfax Va. about 13 miles away
but, yeah, your correct I'm sure I'll find what I'm looking for as far as any seafood  :)

Unfortunately, we're going to miss the chance to see the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which will be on display until July 25 (dammit!).

http://www.aidsquilt.org/ (http://www.aidsquilt.org/)

Jan, since you'll be there for the IAC, if you get a chance to see the quilt, you should try to do so.  But be prepared and bring a tissue / handkerchief -- it's very moving.

I already have that on my agenda Henry...thanks.

Two things Santi and I really want to do are
a) The National Zoo (they have pandas!) and
b) Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (they have a Butterfly Pavilion :-)

We're thinking about Friday and Saturday for those events, since Santi will only have two full days with us; he has to fly home Sunday afternoon.

Do we know when the Memorial Service will be?

Oh, that's a crappy location they put you in -- one side looks out on about eight railroad tracks. But on the plus side there's a subway station right there too. If you're in the mood you can walk a few blocks down to the Greyhound station and make some money giving blow jobs in the men's room.

You can get to the restaurant easily as you will not even have to make a line transfer. Take the subway (Red Line) in the direction of Shady Grove, and exit at the Dupont Circle station. That's six stops. When you go up the escalators you'll be on Connecticut Avenue and you'll see the restaurant on the opposite side of that avenue.

All the Hotels near the Conference Center were all booked out, this was the nearest one that had a couple of rooms available.  I won't be spending much time around there anyway so it's not a problem.

The Greyhound station sounds like a nice wee place to visit, I'm always up for something a little different when I'm on holiday, just not sure I'll make any money though, but what the hell anything for a laugh, should I wear my Red Ribbon?

I will be at a wedding rehearsal dinner that evening-- trust me, not even remotely as interesting or fun as what you will all be doing.

So right now, we are looking at 10-12 people for Thursday evening at Circa at Dupont.

I am going to call tomorrow and see if they accept reservations -
They do get a crowd - and the only barrier that could pop up would be the increased crowd they may have from IAC going on.

I will provide an update as soon as I see if they can accommodate.

The Museum on Saturday sounds good. Also, since Santi really only has two full days with us, we're thinking Friday might be a good day to go to the Zoo. I know there's some folks who have voiced in the White House tour thread that they're not going, and we're in that group too, so maybe a little traipse over to see our National Zoo would be a good alternative. Must admit, tho, it would've be fun to take the chance of running into an Obama in their natural habitat.

Although technically it runs from July 21 through the 25, the AIDS MEMORIAL QUILT  (http://www.quilt2012.org/quilt-display-locations/) will still be on display in many venues throughout the city.

If you are looking for a specific panel visit the AIDS QUILT TOUCH (http://www.aidsquilttouch.org/main-menu).  It's an incredible app that allows you to enter a name then shows you that individual's particular panel and where it will be on display.

I entered the name of my oldest and dearest friend and the names of some old friends and I started shaking when i saw what appeared on the screen.  I'm going to miss all of you this year but my heart and soul will certainly be with you as Gary delivers his deeply moving words.

I am in the group touring the White House on Friday, so the zoo would be out for me.  At one time the zoo was free to get into, and I think it still is.

The Vietnam Memorial is never closed and it is an easy Metro trip from our hotel.  You will have no problem at all finding your way there.

And it really is a "must see" in DC including the Korean War Memorial which is nearby.  For that matter, the massive World War II memorial is also a Must See.

Have never been inside the Newseum and have always wanted to go.  Wonder if we will have a group wanting to visit there.

One Tampa reminded me that I would like to see the National Cathedral, even better take in one of their choral Evensongs. Looks like they are in the late afternoons...anyone wanna accompany me? Gary? Phil? Any other God fearing AMG'ers??

Heathens welcome also.

This heathen will go, the methodist part of me won't even care that I will be in a Cathedral. ;D

Also the  Holocaust Museum is good, although you can only take the tour at certain times, but you can make the time that day I think.

I promise to throw back a shot of Chambord every time someone makes fun of Guilhermina.

I've always wanted to witness a spontaneous combustion...so now I am interested.  Most people are afraid of being hit by lightening when they enter a church...come to think of it, I haven't seen that either!

There has been extensive repair work done on the National Cathedral since last year's earthquake so it will not be in its full glory.  Same is true of the Washington Monument which now may not reopen until 2013 or 2014.

Fear not though, there are more free things to see and do in Washington DC that can possibly accomplished in the time we will be there.

Eager to join you all next Saturday morning.  So wish I could come sooner.

Willy,
I am also bringing a bottle of Firefly Ice Tea Vodka, and maybe a bottle of cool whip vodka to.  Depending on traffic on 95 and the beltway Thursday night the chambord may be gone.

@Den  If you spontaneously combust I will gladly help resuscitate you ;D

As a former nurse, I'm pretty sure all we'd be able to do is piss on him to put the fire out.   ;D  Absolutely positive that's what I learned.

I believe this mall is pretty close to the hotel.

Ballston Common I would not call "destination shopping" more a neighborhood place. If you want the best shopping on the East Coast outside of NYC then you should use a day and go to Tyson's Corner. Tyson's actually has not one, but two massive shopping malls located right next to each other.

Tyson's Corner Center: http://www.shoptysons.com/

Tyson's Galleria: http://www.tysonsgalleria.com/

However, you have to take both the subway and a bus/taxi to get there. It's about 8 miles from the hotel.

Keep in mind that there is also a Macy's department store in downtown DC, and if you insist on only using the subway to shop take the red line to the Friendship Heights station in Chevy Chase. There is both a Neiman Marcus and a Saks Fifth Avenue there.

There is also an upscale mall in Georgetown - just a few blocks away from the Foggy Bottom metro station.....

Greg, I'll go with you to the mall, but, I must warn you, I'm not much of a clothing hound like you are  ;)

but if I can find a nice pair of boots, ( if they have my size most retailers don't  :o) I might buy them, and buy you lunch  ;)

Yeah, I know -- it's been there since I was a teen. At that time it was very cutting edge/very high end, but I looked at the store listing this morning and there's only four stores (I discounted the Dean & DeLuca because it's a food store and not even physically in the mall, it's next door). It's been having tenant issues for years (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/13/AR2010041304310.html). But if anyone does go there, make sure and find the old canal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_and_Ohio_Canal) behind the building as it's got a great walkway/park type area that has also been in a fair amount of films.

Personally I find malls kind of tired. I haven't been in one since early 2005 :) There are better options just walking around on the street in Georgetown, or downtown DC. Still, if you like shopping malls there is no comparison to Tysons.

I lived for three years around the corner from Ballston Common.  It is a neighborhood type mall...not mega shopping, however there are a wide variety of restaurants.  It is on the Orange Line at Ballston...a few stops up from our place.  You most surely would NOT walk there.

I suspect you will find much more near where we are located though.

Once you master Metro (easily done) the whole city is at our feet.

That is exactly what Curtis would do if he were joining us this year. In fact, he would probably walk from the hotel to the Mad Hatter. That's just the way he rolls/walks.
