Experiences with Nutritionists Requested
« on: March 07, 2009, 12:38:02 pm »
I have never had an appointment with a Nutritionist experienced in working with HIV Positive people. Can anyone share what it was like?

I just saw a dietician not too long ago, mostly for suggestions at a good diet for my diabetes.  Registered dieticians and nutritionists can, usually, tailor a diet to meet an individual's specific needs, i.e. what's good for me may not be good for someone else and vice versa.

And for the record, I take calcium w/ D, and a multivitamin every day.

Well, would you elaborate on:

How you selected the nutritionist?

How did the consoling go?

What type of questions were asked of you?

What did you learn?

And, How are you doing with the suggestions?

This really isn't about me solely. I ask this question because I'm curious. I expect others would be interested as well.

I was diagnosed HIV+ last April after getting sick with what I thought was a bad flu. In a 2 month period I had lost 15-20 pounds. Due in part to low appetite brought on by severe anxiety. A holistic approach is taken at the ID clinic I go to (I live in Canada). There are the clinic nurses, ID doc, pharmacist, psychologist, spiritual care giver and nutritionist. I met with the nutritionist and she asked me about my diet. I had and have a very good diet. The problem was my nerves were so bad, just couldn’t eat my ‘good diet’ until maybe later in the day. She provided me with Ensure and Boost to get things started. The goal was to get me back to around 165 pounds. At first I met with her every couple weeks then monthly until I gained my weight back ( it took about 7-8 months—2 pounds a month is a healthy weight gain she said). There were some ups and downs along the way. But, she was very encouraging. The whole weight thing was attached to my anxiety…people asking why I had lost so much weight, that I didn’t look healthy etc etc.  I remember the day (Sept 17’08) it was decided I would start on meds—my appetite was switched on….immediately. That noon hour I went home and for the first time in months had my usual big lunch 2 sandwiches, soup etc. There was obviously a big psychological connect with my appetite and anxiety over when/if I would go on meds. Relieved I had made the decision. I started meds the next day (Rayataz/Truvada/Norvir) and fortunately didn’t have any nausea issues. I’ve been eating well ever since… and probably should slow down. :)  The dietician also suggested I start taking a Calcium/Vit D supplement and muti-vitamin which I have. I waited several weeks until after I started meds…I just didn’t want any more ‘pills’.
I no longer see the dietician. She said she would monitor my blood work for those things that relate to diet - cholesterol etc and if any concerns would contact me.
I don’t really have a ‘specific diet’. I try to eat whole foods. The fewer ingredients the better. i.e.  vegetables/fruits/nuts/seeds/organic brown rice…dark chocolate   ;D I don’t eat anything with an ingredient I can’t pronounce. Try to avoid white flour/white sugar/trans fats  as much as possible and I’m about 70% vegetarian. Some fish/chicken. (beef and lamb..maybe once a month.) Well, I’m way off topic now…hope this helps.

hey! there is nothing off topic about your post. Thank you for sharing your experiences with a nutritionist and what you were trying to get done.

I didn't realize that a nutritionist would be looking at your blood work.

What I find personally helpful is that by explaining the process, and results and what is going on in your life, we can appreciate the role of diet, nutrition, and folks that can help us do what we need done.

thanks!

The dietician that I saw looked at my bloodwork as well....total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, A1C (the test diabetics take that tells what an average blood sugar is).  Like I said, they (dieticians and nutritionists) can tailor a diet for a specific need.  Mine was diabetes.  And like I said, what's right for one person isn't right for another.  Asking each and every person what their experience was like is futile.  The best thing to do is see one (dietician or nutritionist) for yourself.

Why do you assume that sharing experience is futile?

When, where, how and why helps folks learn and understand.

I, like many or most, have never been to a nutritionist. I fully understand the suggestion to go see one. But honestly, describing the process and the personal interaction has good value. (IMHO)

Ultimately, as a reference, knowing what the experience is like makes it easier to make the commitment. Don't you find that this is so?

Once again (and again), a nutritionist or dietician can help by specifying a diet to the person's who's seeing them needs. Geesh.

personally, I was hoping to see if something would come of this thread. I was hoping to find out just why someone would use a nutritionist and how much it would help. (Anecdotal evidence would be fine as the thread only asked for experiences. ;)) No one I have known (with HIV or any other illness) has ever utilized the services of a nutritionist; but I've been given plenty of materials over the years (when in the hospital, from my doc, etc) suggesting the services of this kind of professional.

So I was thinking I might read some stories here of people talking to nutritionists and suddenly feeling miraculously better after a diet change. Or maybe stories saying the nutritionist didn't tell them anything they didn't already know - but then perhaps that's why I've never met someone who had their diet "adjusted" by a nutritionist. So I don't think sharing experiences about using the services of this professional is futile.

Honey, they'll send you out of the office as soon as you disclose that you drink 2 liters of Coca-Cola each day.

drink 2 liters of Coca-Cola each day.
Hey! ;D ::) On the 14th, not only will I be celebrating my 47th bday, but it'll be 47 days without a cigarette. So I've given up my vice of nicotine; but I'll never give up my daily Coke caffeine fix! ;D

lordy, it's all I can do to keep weighing in at 130 lbs :D  (which is what I weighed when I graduated from high school in 1980) When I get sick, I quickly fall down around 123 and look like skeletor. When I'm healthy and fattened up by Christmas cookies to survive the cold Ohio winter, I'm lucky to get up to 138.

it's why I kinda wondered about this whole nutritionist thing. With excellent liver/kidney functions, low cholesterol, low triglyc, good BP, etc. what could I possibly learn from a nutritionist? To keep eating my semi-balanced meals (based on a principle of "moderation in all things") along with chugging the coke and eating the desserts and snacks to try to keep the weight on?

So far what I've been doing for the 16 years I've had AIDS seems to have been working. ;) I just hoped I have screwed up the fine balance by quitting smoking. ;D ROFL

That's the first time I was sent to a nutritionist -- for wasting issues in 2000.  I gained the weight back within 6 months or so.  How tall are you and what was your "normal" weight before all of the weight loss?  A nutritionist will first string you up to those electrode things all over your body and do a lean body mass measurement.  They also have you write down a weekly diary of all food consumption and evaluate it, then offer suggestions for what your target has been set for.

But yeah, I read about your caffeine/coke addiction somewhere else and kind of gagged.  That's a lot of soda each day.  I think I drink one liter a week max, often just a single 20 oz. bottle.

I've never had to see a nutritionist for anything HIV related, but I did have to see one in high school after I collapsed in a cross-country race.  I had a severe electrolyte and iron deficiency.  She was very professional and gave me a lot of pointers and tips to improve my diet while using physical models so I could grasp the portion sizes.  She also questioned me a lot on my eating habits so the recommendations she made wouldn't be too far out of my norm.  I was 17 at the time, but I learned a lot and still use some of those tips to this day.
