Tested Positive Recently
« on: January 29, 2011, 12:11:52 am »
Hi!
My name is Javier. I recently tested positive, and have been feeling down. I had what I think was a seroconversion illness. I had a sore throat, slight headaches, eye floaters everywhere, sinus symptoms, phlegm in my throat, congestion, and a rash of about 15 red little marks, which I thought were a result of riding roller coasters the day they showed up. I talked to the counselor where I tested and he said hiv really doesn't cause most of these symptoms. He said I just happened to get sick around the time of my window period. Read a lot info here already.

I was infected by a woman was staying with recently. Me and my long time gf had broken up. I was really unlucky and had a broken condom. One time exposure and caught this awful virus. I dont blame her at all. Just one of those things that happens in life. She knew her status and never told me. She said it wasn't my business to know. Whatever, can't dwell on that anymore. I'm here, I am a man, I must deal with it.

I have two sons, seven, and three years old. Really scared I wont see them grow up. I have no insurance and I can't afford any medications. I have carried on just for them. I have yet to get my first labs done. Hope I can go without meds for a while.

Sorry for any grammatical errors, English is not my native tongue. Lookin forward to getting to know some new people. From what I have read, you guys are full of support. You guys don't judge on color, nationality, sexual preference, and I am lucky to have found this site.

Thanks...

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis Javier.

You will find these forums a good source of supports and information. But back to your concern about not being able to afford meds - since you mentioned insurance, I am assuming that you're in the US? I am not from the States but there are ways to get into drug assistant programs when you need to be on medication. And even in other countries without universal health care one may still be able to find local or UN-run programs (like in the Philippines, etc) for cheap(er) or even free meds.

It's of course up to you but if you can let the forums know at least which country or state (in the US) you're located we may have the information you need.

Best of luck, Shaun

Even though the health care system is totally F*#%ed up in the US please don't give up even if you have no insurance. You may be able to qualify for ADAP or other programs.

In this day and age, especially if caught early enough, you can live a normal life with HIV. Not to downplay HIV but it rally is not the horror show that it once was. There's no reason you can't see your kids grow up.

Are you able to find a local AIDS Service Organization (ASO) that can help you get assistance with meds/labs?

This link might help:
