On Sunday April 13 i was at a local park with some of my friends and i was playing basketball. The game was about done and i saw the guy that was guarding me wiping off blood with his shirt from the top of his hand because he was apparently cut or scratched. My first reaction was to look at myself and see if i had any cuts or anything like that and sure enough i did on the top of my hand. I had a scratch from someones nails and it wasnt really deep it just took the first couple of layers of skin off maybe, It didnt even look like it was really bleeding just real red inside. Well anyways i pretty much quite the game because after i saw that the guy had a cut on his hand i didnt want to get anywhere near him. Now i am worried that i may have gotten some of that blood in my scratch. I dont know how long the guy could have had that cut and stuff. Am i at risk for HIV from something like this? I have always gotten scratched or cut from playing basketball as everyone does but i never seen a guy bleeding and then also finding a cut on me at the same time. Please do i need to be tested from this or can i feel confident that HIV is not transmitted this way and i have nothing to worry about. Please help!

You have nothing to worry about this is not an HIV situation, infected blood has to get into the blood stream, please read the Welcome Thread and follow the lessons on how HIV is and is not transmitted.

I also understand that no one has ever been infected from playing basketball and in every game someone is probably cuts and scratched and bleeding and it just has never happened that way. So do i need to be tested from this or can i try and forget about it.

For infected blood to enter the blood stream you would have to have a large, and I mean a Large open cut on your hand, you do not need to test over this.

Good for you, and trust me you really DO NOT have anything to worry about, if we thought there was the slightest chance you were put at risk we would tell you.

Hello again, i have another question. Today i got a haircut and the barber cut me with the clippers. It has kind of getten me worried because the what ifs started popping into my head. Is something like that possible to get HIV if say he cut someone before me then got some blood on the clippers and then cut me with it, Is this a risk or can i forget about this. Please help, oh im sorry if this seems like a stupid question

No. HIV is not transmitted via hair-clippers.

Once again, this is another non-risk situation.

Have you read our lesson on Transmission? You get all of the basics there. HIV is a fragile virus which is not easily transmitted. It doesn't happen in any of the topical ways you are concerned about.

Read the lesson.

Thanks Andy as well as the others for your replies. My mind just started to take off and all the what ifs like what if the barber cut someone before me then i got cut, I got a couple of cuts from the clippers and i was just worried about it but from your words it does make scence that even if he did cut someone before me and got blood on the clippers then the blood would have dried in a matter of minutes. Thank you for your help, i will try and move on.

Hey thanks andy, i read the lesson on transmission and it says that hiv can enter through open cuts, sores and stuff like that is that mostly for health care workers who are around tons of blood and stuff like that or could that apply to my situation

When we refer to open cuts we are talking about gaping wounds and large open bleeding sore..so no this does not apply to your situation..time to move on.

Hey guys i wanted to post to let all of you know that i have been doing really really good and not worrying about the things i outlined in the post that got me scared. I wasnt thinking about them anymore and i wasnt worried about them anymore but then something happpened and its like it started all over againl. On June 12 i was at burger king with a friend and i didnt order any food but while he was ordering i was off to the side waiting for him and i can remember it was a little crowded in there becuase it was near lunch time so i moved over to another area where there wasnt anyone standing and while i was standing there i felt a little its or something on my arm and i looked and there was a little red mark or a sore or something, I generally sometimes get tiny little sores that itch on my arms but never on the side of my arm and it seems like the mark was a little bit bigger than the normal little itchy things i would get, the point is i am scared that someone could have poked me with a needle when i was standing and waiting for my friend. For some reason i cant think intellectually enough to remeber for sure if i was poked or if i felt any pain, i cant recall anything so i kept telling myself that i was never poked because i would have known for sure right away. Does this sound like something that i should worry about or get tested on or should i just continue to keep trying what i was doing and forget about it, thanks

Honey, you need to talk to a mental health professional. You've got some problems with your head.

The reality is that nobody is out there lurking in crowds waiting to stick HIV contaminated needles in you. You should talk to your doctor about these paranoid, unfounded fears you're having and ask him or her to refer you to a suitably qualified person.

I have a hypothetical question.

Would it be possible to contract HIV or even HEP from a handshake if both people lets say had cuts or scracthes on their hands. Would something like that be possible if when they shook kands and both cuts touched each other or something.
