There's something discomfiting about joining Facebook and then receiving a friend request from the boyfriend you had 16 years ago that your broke up with 2 months before your AIDS diagnosis, and who actually met you at your doctor's office to hold your hand for your first cd4 test, and who consoled you while crying outside of Sol Moscot Eyewear/Opticians on 14th Street in Manhattan, and who took you home from the doctors.

Fortunately though I was infected throughout our 8 month relationship he never got infected (yes we used condoms the entire time you filthy barebackers!). I was 28, and he was *cough* 18.  Actually IIRC he may have been 17 when we met, but I think he lied to me and then had his 18th birthday the month after we first fucked.  I met him getting on the elevator at Macy's in Herald Square.  His mother hated me because I was corrupting her young son, taking him to him to after hours drug dens like Sound Factory and giving him hits of acid.  Actually in hindsight I was schooling him on responsible partying, but evidently his mother won and when he broke up with me he claimed it was because I was too "wild" - LOL, barbara please.  He scampered off after that and joined the Army, writing me frequently, and then when he got out he dived into a relationship with some other queen that looked just like me.

He later got a job as the desk clerk at the legendary bath house West Side Club where he played mixed tape DJ sets I'd made years earlier, a fact I didn't learn for a good five years later when another DJ told me he'd obtained copies of them to learn what the records were.

The last time I think I saw him was on Christopher Street around 2001.  He'd gone through a multi-year meth tweak-o-rama and got himself infected.

So anyway, I've added him as a friend. All of my old New York City entourage, which is quite extensive, has been pestering me for a couple years to get on Facebook. I still find it all a bit odd, and semi-invasive.

miss philly is now a social networking queen! yes, it is odd. but wait love, it will get odder.

my oddest friend requests? the dude who lied to me about his status. the guy who took me out the night i barebacked. all my hiv questions surrounding diagnosis are part of my social network. u think facebook reflects life in weirdness?

and yes, some of us dirty bareback whores may be changing our tunes rather soon. immaculate infections are no girl's friends. and just for the record...i thought it was with the ones that mattered (hahaha, not that it matters).

lastly, ask for your mixed tapes back and royalties  ;D

thanks for the history and have a great weekend.

best,
d

hmmm... I also have a friends request from the exceptionally odd pink mohawk haired tattoo'd Brazilian circa 1995.  This guy stalked me for a good month before I had to give him the ole heave ho.  That will teach me not to do cocaine at CBGB's.

Judging by the way my friendship list grows, I am growing increasingly convinced that Faceache is a sexually transmitted habit  :P

I'm feeling pressured by friends and relatives to join Facebook but I'm resistant for the exact scenerio you describe. I don't want to hear from ex-boyfriends, high school peers or cousins I haven't talk to in 20 years.
