Testing Warranted?
« on: November 15, 2006, 06:58:17 pm »
Hi all,

I participated in vaginal-penial sex with a bi-sexual man. We used a condom and as far as I know the condom did not break. We also engaged in oral sex without a condom. He did not ejaculate in my mouth, but there was definitely precum. Today is 3 days afterwards, and I have had really bad diarreah. This is extremely unusual for me.

1) would this be too soon for ARS to occur?
2) should i be tested?

I have a regular partner that I have sex with often. We have both been tested and do not use protection. If this warrants testing, then I want to be aware so I know to use protection with my regular partner. I do not want to jeopardize his health.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer..  And great site!!

Giving head is at the very bottom of the risk scale about as close to nil as you can get without being zero. I myself wouldn't test, but that is up to you. Yes the diarreah has nothing to do with ARS. Your symtoms came on way to early. Symptom if they show up at all, come at 2-4 weeks after being infected.

I read that saliva kills HIV. Is this true? Is that why it is very hard to be infected orally?

The reason why I am asking is because I have cuts in my mouth from unconsciously biting the sides of my cheeks. I also have chronic tonsilitis so my tonisils and throat are always inflamed. I'm not sure if there are cuts because of this condition, but if there were, would any of these two things (cuts in cheeks, or infected throat/tonsils) make my oral concern any different than the average person?

I do not want to search the internet for these answers. I would rather get it from an educated source.

Thank you.

hi

HIV testing is not required for the situation you describe, so take a chill pill:). HIV is not your problem.

BTW ARS symptoms ain't coming that early, usually it takes around 2-4 weeks for ARS aymptoms to appear. Moreover, those symptoms are concurrent.

I am not trying to debate what you are saying, I am just trying to understand the virus more. So after saying that, I would like to ask why wouldn't tested need to be warranted?

Why is it different to not be worried about semen when it comes into contact with cuts in the mouth as opposed to cuts in the vagina?

I do not understand this, and I am just trying to understand the virus/science.

Thanks again for any input I recieve :)

Saliva has inhibiting factors that prevents HIV transmission.

What does the ARS Rash look like? The reason I am asking is because the partner I was worried about had a rash all over his entire chest area. It was a very ugly rash and the doctor gave him some fungal cream and sent him to a specialist. I am wondering if that would be an ARS rash. He has had it for a week now, and it covers his entire chest area. Any thoughts?

If this person was newly infected, would it change my previous answer of not needing a test?

Can you please tell me the preferred method to search this site? When I use the search funciton, I get a list of threads to check, but after I click on a link and visit that thread, I am unable to get back to my main search results. Is there a trick to doing this? And if not, could you please let your webmaster know that this is happening?

Just a suggestion...

Thanks

Hello, I'm new to this site and i have been reading the information and sometimes i find it conflicting based on information i was given in school and also from other websites. So basically, based on your information, knowledge and experience anyone that uses a latex condom that stays in place and intact has no reason to test? I have been sexually active for a few months now. I have always used condoms and water based lubes. I have never given oral without a condom. I do get oral without one. I'm usually the top partner (I'm gay) and I had multiple partners, always using condoms and never getting any liquids on to me or in me. So even though i had many partners (like 8 with many times with each) i should not test?

Thanks for the advice.
Tony

Hi again,

I am still worried about this incident. - The rash my partner had went away within one day of using the fungal cream. Is the ARS rash fungal in nature? I am concerned b/c during the 6 years that I have known this man, he has never had a fungal, or any other type of rash. This is all new...

Not one in my 35 years have I ever been worried of an STD, and this time I just can't shake it..

Tia, you're filtering everything thorugh an HIV jitters mindset. It's the domain of what ifs as in what if he is HIV+ and such.

His HIV status is actually irrelevant in this conversation. By having used a condom for intercourse the question of HIV status was made irrelevant. Condoms provide very effective protection against transmission. Even IF your friend is HIV+, and please understand I am not implying that he is, but even if he is, the condom would have given you the necessary protection.

There's no cause for further concern about this incident. We're talking feelings here as the driving force and not HIV facts. Something about this has triggered worries in you which have no basis in HIV science.

My boyfriend was just diagnosed with "Molluscum Contagiosum". There are approximately 5 of the small wart like growths on his pubic hair. These just came last week and have never been there before.

My internet searches are saying that this could be a sign of a new HIV infection. Because of my earlier posts I am concened that I did get HIV and that I have passed it on.

I had never heard of this before.  I have no sores, and this is the first episode my boyfriend has ever had. He is 100% faithful to me and hasn't been with anybody else in 7 months.

From real life experiences, is the Molluscum contagiosum an HIV indicator? My non-stop diarerrea and now this, has really got me scared..

Thanks,
Tia

Also, I forgot to mention that when I went to the STI clinic to get tested for other STD's the nurse there told me that usually oral is a low risk, but because of the shape of my throat (being so torn up from my tonsillitus) and the cuts in my cheek , it puts me in a high risk group.  I know there are open sores/cuts in my mouth cuz I periodically taste blood. There was precum, and there was only a bit that came in my mouth, but is a tiny drop enough to catch HIV?

Thanks again...

Believe it or not that disease was around before HIV. So he has never been ill. Lucky him. That doesn't mean he has a super-immune system that is now compromised by HIV - for this is your thinking. You have already been told that your diarrhea came on too early and the fact it is still present indicates it isn't from HIV. You also don't get HIV from the activities you have been saying.

Take this next line and repeat it to yourself because it is important.

You DON'T diagnose HIV from symptoms - of anything. You diagnose HIV from a test.

I've been on this site now for about 3 years and I've seen people fall sick with things that look like HIV from an internet search after doing things that might actually have given them HIV. You have not. These people have not tested positive. It just indicates how unreliable symptoms are as a diagnosis tool. It's hard to accept, but that's the truth...

And on your latest post. That STI clinic person is talking out of their arse. You are the first person who has given someone a blow job with a throat in that condition? Of course not. There are millions of blow-jobs per day, some with HIV infected people and some performed by people with throats like yours. And that didn't give them HIV. I predict the same is true for you. High-risk my eye! They should be fired for that rubbish. Trust me, you were not at HIGH RISK. You were at nothing risk.

Wow - that was some response. - Thank you :)  You guys sure seem very sure of yourself in your answers, and of the fact that I had a zero-risk situation.

It's about time I started to believe that too :)

One quick question HIV worker - if you do not mind.

I'm interested on how virus's spread. How long can a virus live on an object? For instance, my boyfriends sores are contagious, and he picks up the bar of soap with his hands, and uses the soapy hands to wash an area (including the sores). If he were to touch the soap, and then I pick it up to wash myself - will I be spreading the virus all over my body? (even towels - they say it is spread from towels, but what if the towels are always washed in cold water?)  I'm so confused!@

I've tried to look this info up on the internet but I am not really getting any where. If you could give me some scientific insight to this, it would be greatly appreciated :)

LOL...it's not the plague. Think of HIV like a peach. The core of the peach contains the genomic material and is coated in protein. The skin of the peach is the HIV lipid envelope. Sort of like a bubble made of lipid. If you add soap to HIV it bursts the bubble (envelope) and inactivates it. So HIV on soap is not a problem. Even if it was on a towel, the amount of HIV would be VERY low. There are thousands of people who live in serodiscordant relationships. That is one person who is HIV negative and the other positive. They cohabit with all of the situations you can imagine and nobody has got it that way.

I'm confused by your answer anyhow. You are now worried he has it and you are spreading it all over yourself?? I thought you thought you thought you gave it to him?

I wasn't talking about HIV - just any virus in general - say herpes sores, or what about those wart like growths from the Molluscum Contagiosum that he has now?

Does anyone know why the State of Massachusetts has their window period set to only 6 weeks? Is it because their testing method is more advanced, or are they more confident in the 6 week window then others?

Tia,

It is because at their State testing centers, they use only the latest test, which is a bundled (combined) ELISA and p24 test. If you want to know more about tests, read the Welcome thread and follow the Testing Lesson link.

How come there is not any standardization of info between STI clinics?

For instance, you guys told me that my oral exposure wasn't a risk, yet the experts at my local clinic classify me as a high risk? I've been thinking that it may have to do with the fact that they can see my throat infection and the punctures in my cheeks from chronically biting them since quitting smoking.

I am concerned with how tired I have become. I always feel tired and can easily fall asleep at my desk at work. What is more import is the Mollescum virus that my boyfriend has caught. It seems very ironic that he never had any genital sores and 3 weeks after I cheated on him he broke out with these sores. His haven't gone away yet and he's been treating them for almost a month now. Yet, I still don't have any of these sores (we haven't had sex in fear of them spreading).

I can't help worry that I picked up the HIV virus from the oral episode, transfered it immediately to him, and now the Mollescum sores are a symptom that he is having. When we googled the Mollescum articles we found articles that claimed it to be a symptom of initial HIV infection.

We both try to disregard this possiblity with the notion that oral with precum is not a risk, but it is hard to do when their is no explanation for these sores, other than that we travelled from Canada to the Caribean and maybe he got it from a swimming pool or towel at the resort, but if that was the case, you would think I would have had them too. Has anybody ever heard of this mollescum virus in adults before?
Thanks,
Tia

I don't know what you told your clinic, but what you told, us your risk was zero. usually it has nothing to do with the clinic, it has to do with the way you answered the questions.

I told the clinic the exact same info as I had posted on this site. The only additonal info that I had given the clinic was that the guy I was with was using this gay "cruise line" phone system that we have in our city.  The nurse at the clinic mentioned told me that those lines are only for sex and that many ppl that are using them are HIV +. Not sure if that is how he arrived to his decision that I was "high risk".

That was the only difference in info that I told him. The nurse knows more about the prevalance of HIV in our city I guess, but the sexual facts remained the same. - protected penial/vaginal sex, and unprotected oral with precum.

Hi Again,

Sorry to keep pestering with questions, but I am still concerned over this incident. I am trying to shrug it off , but I still worry about the Molluscum Contagiosum wart things that my boyfriend has. I may have 2 of them on my neck, (not diagnosed) even though his are on his genitals.

Is the Molluscum really a sign of HIV?

I've never heard of it before this and none of my friends have either. It seems very uncommon. I live in Canada - not sure if that matters or not..

Night sweats - do they just happen in the night or could it be anytime? The reason I ask is b/c my boyfriend is not feeling well now. Had a headache all day, and now is sweating, yet he is not hot or feverish; he actually feels cold.

This all seems so ironic. The mollescum, the sweating, my swollen lymph nodes..  I never got into symptoms before because I've read so many times that symptoms mean nothing. It just seems so odd though. When my boyfriend had diareah last night I felt so sick with worry. But then I tell myself that if he did catch it from me it would be almost 7 weeks ago.. Too late to start getting sick, no?

I also tell myself that if I did acquire HIV, then I would have got it from that one time incident, and had given it to my boyfriend immediately after. That part seems very ironic to have happened.. But then I remember reading that it is easy to infect others if the virus is new. IF I did get it myself, I would have got it from a newly infected person myself. Seems like so many IF"s , but then on the other hand it is so ironic. Now I've had this white patch on the back of my one tonsil. Just looks like a splash of yogurt always stuck back there. Not sure if any of this is related, but I am started to get real worried.

Back to my original question, does anybody know if I should be worried over this evening sweat, not feeling well, with headache, but skin is super cold?

Thanks again

Tia,

Why don't you just go test and put an end to the speculation? It's been well over six weeks since you encounter and if you are indeed positive, you will test positive by now. I'm fully expecting you to test negative.

Are you using condoms with your boyfriend? You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Does anybody know what Generation of Tests they use in Canada, or more specifically in Manitoba?

I've been all over the internet searching for this information and can not find anything. Some sources from Canada mention 3rd generation, but I'm wondering if they have bumped it up to 4th since then - as the articles were fairly old..

Thanks!

Tia,

It doesn't matter what generation test you use at three months. Any will be conclusive at this point. The newer generations only make a difference in the first few weeks of infection as they are more sensitive and will pick up the antibodies quicker.

I was asking because of the test I took at 6 weeks. I had a negitive result at 6.5 weeks and was very encourage by it because I have read that it new generation tests almost always pick up positives by then.

I took my 3 month test a few weeks ago, and had an appt to get my test results from the doctor, however, my test results are still not ready. On Friday they were 2 days late and they told me to check back on Monday. I have been starting to worry again. Especially because I have broke out with cold sores on my face between my nose and lip, have one white pussy tonsil, a burning throat, and some sort of painful under the skin lump that is developing in my vagina. My mother swears it is herpes, but I still have to have it diagnosed. - I have no idea where I picked up herpes from! I keep thinking that my immune system is super low causing my system to break out with this stuff that I normally dont' have. Another wierd thing that has happened to me lately is that it is very sore walking - I keep wondering if my lymph nodes in my genital area are swollen causing this pain. It has been going on for a month now. I kept telling myself that I pulled something on the treadmill, but it's been along time now..

I was wondering about the generation of test because if it was a 4th generation it would ease my mind. I keep thinking my result is taking long because they are retesting it or maybe performing a Western Blot test.

:(  I know you guys think I'm crazy. I'm not a hypocondriac or do not have OCD. I am just worried.

Thanks again

Tia,

Stress can cause all sorts of things to start going wrong with your body. See your doctor about the various things that are worrying you.

Your 6.5 week negative result is not likely to change for the reasons you yourself state. I'm fully expecting your three month test to also return with a negative result.

I can understand that the delays in your recent result are making you jumpy, but don't let it. This is cold and flu season and people who work in labs call in sick just like anyone else. Staffing shortages is a very likely explanation for the delay.
