microwaving eggs

seriously, is the gross or convenient?

when the idea was introduced to me at first i balked. then i tried it. and a couple of experiments and explosions later i discovered that microwaved eggs were tasty, quick and convenient.  i must admit i loved that i could use the same dish that i prepared the eggs with to eat the eggs and had less dishes when breakfast was done.

what's your take?

I microwave scrambled eggs. The trick is to add a little water, stir frequently and don't overcook. A little bit of butter is nice too it you don't mind the calories. Be sure and put the dish in water as soon as you are done because those egg scraps dry like concrete.

no skillet to clean, no heating, just push the microwave buttons and go.

An induction cooktop (or single 'burner' / hob) with a non-stick skillet with cook em' quicker than 90 seconds.  They're a bit expensive - a single unit can be found for around $75 or a full built-in cooktop for around $1500 - but are wonderful to cook on.  The heat is created in the skillet or pot itself, not the cooktop.  Besides being quick, they're also very responsive and don't heat up the kitchen like a gas burner or standard electric element will.

A small glass bowl (like those old Pyrex or Corning custard dishes) works great as a poacher.  I usually line it with plastic wrap, add water, the egg (breaking the yolk with a fork), and cover with more wrap.  With a high-powered microwave, 60 seconds will yield a soft but completely cooked egg.  The plastic wrap makes clean-up easy.

I've never microwaved an egg. The beauty and joy of an egg is the time it takes to create the perfect one. You cannot rush an egg. Embrace it, relish it, spend time with it.

I learned my lesson in college. I tried to deep fry an egg in a "Fry Daddy", I still have a couple tiny scars from the explosion.

I bought a Martha Stewart plastic microwave egg poacher at K-Mart for $1.79 and I intend to get my moneys worth out of it .

don't worry though Skee. I was out working in my new garden all day. In a few months, I'll have squash and okra - and of course the only decent way to eat those is fried! and the microwave oven doesn't do fried.

Yes it is.  My wife doesn't understand why I'm rushing everyone to the table when I cook pancakes.  Funny thing about pancakes is not everyone can cook em the right way, it's kind of an art and one I have perfected I might add.

LOL.. tuna helper brings back some memories.   My roomie and I at the famed Tudor Hotel had one burner on a broken stove to cook with.  If we didn't have to work, we would cook a box of mac-n-cheese, throw in a can of tuna, and stay up all night playing D&D.  And fried ocra is like popcorn to me, I had some a couple of weeks ago from the local rib joint.  I love squash also, but have never lived with a woman that cares for it, so I've kind of done without...

Now this is a thread I can put my teeth into.  I start with my Emerel cast iron griddle, fry the bacon on ultra low, to keep it nice and flat, 25min. then I fry my three over easy eggs while the tortilla or bread are being prepared, then sit down to a really nice breakfast.

The answer is yes.  When I worked, and when my sweetie worked, it was up at 4am so we could appreciate a full and wonderful breakfast, and still have time to visit before the bullshit of the day.  Now he is retired, and so we still get up and 5am and do the same schedule.  Microwaving eggs is un- natural.  Cooking is an art, you eventually eat, so make the best of it.

I don't eat many eggs, but I tried hard-boiling a few once.  It seemed no easier or faster than stovetop, and they weren't hard either.   Ugh. 

Mostly I use the microwave just for warming leftovers, but it is good for making grits.  Cooking and cleanup are both much easier.

Hard boiled eggs give me bad farts. I mean terrible. I cant even stand to be in the same room with myself. Easter was never fun for that reason. I can still hear my mom telling me to sleep outside in the days after Easter.

But half way back on topic, I do not microwave my eggs. However microwaved bacon is the best thing since the wheel. Good and crispy, no grease.

you can eat eggs raw, slightly cooked or well done. microwaving is great when on the run or just plain lazy.

i've come to enjoy the ease of a little butter, salt & pepper and 80 seconds later. the pan is great on weekends but i have not cooked breakfast m-f since before college. i just dont have the time. i like sleeping in way too much to get up early to cook breakfast. usually its oatmeal (instant) or some frozen food that i can toss in the microwave.

dinners are more my thing. but lately convenience has been key. between my 50 hour plus weeks, faltering viral loads and epic lethargy i just want the option thats less taxing - microwaved eggs. at first it freaked me out. then it tasted good and provided less dishes.

a lot of things are unnaturally until normalized. ... haters

While I love a good fried egg. The process I go through to get the egg in the pan is quite tedious.

Nothing scares me worse than the possobility of eating a bad egg. Id rather be mugged. First I check the carton and make sure my eggs are still in date If its within a week prior to expiration the whole shebang goes in the trash and I eat oatmeal. If I find a suitably fresh egg as determined by the expiration date, first I weed out the eggs with poop on them. I then float the egg in a glass of water. If the egg floats, its no good for me (its bio hazzrd), I get tongs and throw it in the trash, along with the rest of the carton. I will only eat an egg that doesnt float (this may be a myth rooted in childhood, but it works for me). Once I find a poop free, non-floating egg I crack it in the pan, if the yolk immediately busts, I toss it in the trash. Eventually I find a good cookable egg.

I nearly lost my mind on a trip to my cousins in Maine. She has a chicken coop with about 100 chickens in it. I was told we had to go out and get "fresh eggs" for breakfast. when we entered the coop a panic set in, as all the chickens were sqawking and fluttering everywhere, they were above me, beside me, under me, they kept trying to jump on me from the rafters, they were flying by my head. To my horror she snatched up a few chickens by the neck and grabbed their eggs, there was poop on the eggs, the eggs were brown, yellow and orange, no nice white eggs like I get from the store. I'm still emotionally scarred from that breakfast.

I know this is not natural, especially since I have no problem popping open a can of potted mystery meat and downing it.

But on the up side, my egg OCD issue is on my long list of psychological disorders I need to get treated.

However, I would really like to know how long it takes to boil/fry/vapourize an egg in the Large Hardon Collider at 7 Gazillion electron Volts. There must be a student who already tried this...

I did work as a graveyard shift waitress at Denny's in Waikiki for a couple of years serving eggs to tourists.  One night a man who said he was from Marin, ordered his eggs "fondled" I said if I fucked everyone who thought I was cute, I would be so wide, you could park a transit bus and a small car up there.  So, can you really cook those suckers in a microwave?     Have the best day

is there a difference between brown eggs and white eggs?  where do brown eggs come from and where do white eggs come from?  also, how do they get different sizes of eggs (i.e. large, medium, jumbo) -- different sizes of chickens???   Just some questions that maybe someone has the answer to as long as we are on the subject of eggs.  thanks

I have have some knowledge about chickens:  I met a tourist named Vito in Waikiki who lived in Los Angeles.  On our first date, he asked me to come home and live with him (I am from Los Angeles). 17 days later, I was on a plane to L.A..  On the third day there was a call from the post office, a package of live chicks had arrived for Vito and needed to be picked up immediately.

When we got home, Vito wanted to open the box and look at the chicks... Then we would put the chicks back in the box and make them a place to live in the laundry room.  Have you ever seen the "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy and Ethyl are trying to keep the chicks hid from Ricky and Fred?  They do not fit back in the box.  Within days they were getting bigger and out grew the laundry room and started taking over the kitchen.  Vito's parents owned the apartment building and being an old family from Palermo, who were poor, we built a chicken coop next to the rabbit hutch.

Vito also ordered more chickens and there was many colors, sizes of eggs and colors of eggs.  My best Gal Pal from Waikiki called one day to ask if I was going to ride the range in my convertible and herd the chickens.  By this time, the chickens had their own apartment and Vito's mother was having the chickens moved to a house she owned on Lake Elsinore.  Cousin Marie would stay in Elsinore, feed the chickens, collect the eggs and grow the tomatos for mama's sauce.

This is pretty much everything I know about farming...  I did leave Los Angeles for a 20 acre ranch type in Northern California (about 10 years ago).  I went to see the county about putting up a fence, getting one of those old bath tubs and a salt block for cows to raise hamburger.  I had an SR-1 zoning, could have 1 horse per acre but no agriculture, not even a large garden for the "Farmers Market."  I also found out you don't raise cows for hamburger.    Have the best day

When I was a kid my Grandma had a huge rooster that would attack me and take away anything I was eating like an apple or something . I hated that old rooster until they day I found him half dead in the back yard one morning and took pity on him .
