Scared and confused
« on: April 19, 2017, 07:28:39 pm »
I ended a long term relationship last summer. Afterwards, I did engage (protected and unprotected) with someone who showed negative results. They even said they were on Prep along with those results. I did not engage with anyone else since then (November). Fast forward to last week, I decided to try Prep as a part of  my newly single lifestyle. The preliminary screen was negative. The blood work they sent off, though showed "repeatedly reactive" for HIV2. They said HIV2 is usually found in people from Western Africa or by sleeping with infected people from that region. I'm not from West Africa nor was the person I slept with (who also reported negative results). A confirmatory test was sent and I await the results. What dies this mean? I'm very scared!

Right now it means nothing other than an HIV2 test was "repeatedly reactive."  False "positives" do occur.  Though it may be a stressful time for you, of course, you will need to await the results of the confirmatory test.

Remember, that is why confirmatory tests are taken, to make sure preliminary tests are not incorrect.

I wish you the best as you await your confirmatory results.

Thank you for your reply. So, pardon me if this is a crazy question....does repeatedly reactive mean "positive?"

You're welcome.

Yes, "repeatedly reactive" could mean positive, but would depend on further testing and confirmation of that testing.  In practicality, it means "test further."
