I did something very stupid the night of August 12--I had an encounter which put me at risk and gave me gonorrhea. It involved unprotected oral and BRIEF (i know still a risk) unprotected anal insertion.
I got the gonorrhea taken care of.
Yesterday, I took a Home Access test which was exactly 24 days post exposure and I just called to get the results---NEGATIVE (couldn't believe they did it that quick). Now, here is the kicker--today I woke up with a mild fever and aches, etc. Do you think the 24 day result is somewhat accurate? Would the test have been indeterminate if there was something going on? I definitely plan to retest in a few weeks but am worried that now I am ill that these results aren't accurate.
Please provide your insight. THANK YOU!

Curious,
I'm glad to hear you've had the gono taken care of. Nasty bug that. Because you had an unprotected anal encounter you do need to test for HIV infection. Your 24 day result is a very good indicator that you'll test negative at the 12-13 week mark.
Nevertheless you still need to have an HIV antibody test done at 12-13 weeks to confirm this latest negative result. HIV infection is nothing to guess about so that confirmatory test is important. Sexually active people should have a full STD screen at least twice a year. A full screen includes an HIV antibody test. As you've discovered STD's such as gonorrhoea are quite contagious. They're also more prevalent than HIV.
Also I recommend that you read our Welcome Thread (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=220.0) to learn more about how HIV is and is not transmitted.

Any negative result is always good news.
The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. The overwhelming number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure to the HIV virus.
The CDC recommends testing at 13 weeks after a risky incident. So anything done before then which is negative is good but not enough to say the issue is resolved.
As for your symptoms there is absolutely nothing which is in anyway HIV specific about them. If they persist you should discuss them with your doctor. Either the presence or the absence of symptoms is never the way to know reliably about HIV status. Only a test taken at the appropriate time can give you that answer.
HIV is not an easy virus to transmit so the odds are in your favor regarding a single incident.
It's not clear whether you were the giver or receiver in the anal part of the incident. Receiving is a higher risk but both are risky. You can have all the anal sex you want to. Just make sure whomever is pitching is always, ALWAYS wearing a latex condom. Everytime. No exceptions.
Receiving oral is not a risk. Giving oral is a very low risk especially if ejaculation does not take place.
Good luck with your test. I think your chances are very good for testing negative.
Cheers,

Do you think I took the test and THEN started to seroconvert?
-
Curious,
That is possible, which is why you have to test at the 12-13 week mark. Remember though, the chances of you having contracted HIV from this incident are very low. Don't fret. Get tested at the end of the 13 week window period. I'm confident you'll test negative.

I have been wondering the same thing. I tested negative YESTERDAY which was 24 days post exposure...now im sick with swollen lymph nodes, fever, chills, etc. Went to doc and he said its tonsillitis and gave me amoxicillin. Go figure.

Ann,
Sorry--this is just a very anxious time for me.
-
Well I went to the Doc and was diagnosed with tonsillitis yesterday. Took antibiotics and it has cleared it up within 24 hours. My question is ---does ARS respond to antibiotics? Can anyone tell me? I got sick Tuesday late evening now it is Saturday morning and im back to normal. Please advise...still very nervous here. My exposure was brief unprotected insertive anal.
-
The answer is NO. You need to wait till your appropriate time and test like you've been told.
-
Just to clarify, ARS does NOT respond to antibiotics correct?
-
ARS does not come as one symptom, if you have ARS or not. If you doctor said tonsillitis, then tonsillitis is what it is.
-
Thanks for the clarification--I am just worried because I also had a fever and aches.

I have read this board before - but I am curious if HIV can be spread through any possible means with French Kissing? I recently dated a guy and found out he is HIV+ - we did mess around safely before he was infected but I believe that we did some pretty heavy French Kissing when he was serocoverting. Am I at any risk? I know what I have read before but please help me. Also, what is the statistics on people having antibodies that can be picked up on an HIV test? THANK YOU SO MUCH

You've been coming here for long enough now to know that kissing is NOT a risk for hiv infection. Did you not bother to read the Transmission Lesson? Get reading.
Saliva is not infectious and kissing is not a risk.
