ground level fundraising

Regan Hoffman has beautifully outlined how a failure to properly fund research has stalled some of the stunning advances we regularly read about.  No big surprise.  What *should* be a surprise is that there doesn't seem to be a road to get us from insufficient to less-insufficient funding.

I've (successfully) worked for a handful of charitable fundraisers in a telesales capacity, and support myself in a glorified version of telemarketing, so it seemed a natural fit to seek out volunteer opportunities in an outbound call center seeking donations or even soliciting sales to help "the cause".  These opportunities don't seem to exist.

Does anyone know where one can go to volunteer to actually help raise cash for HIV research?  In a lot of reputable charitable organizations, cubicle monkeys contribute greatly to funding but in HIV research.  HIV research orgs like amFar seem to have left this opportunity on the table.  Is there a reason for this?
