Firstly I would like to say thanks to everyone on this forum and appreciate your great work. I would have probably ended in ER if not for this forum due to anxiety.

My ex-girlfriend, recently opened up to me on her HIV status. She acquired HIV through birth and she's been on medication since the age of 4 and she's now 26 year old. We shared so many good memories, we're decided to be best friends.

We've never had vaginal or anal sex. She gave me blowjobs twice - unprotected, on May 4th and recently on September 6th - when she opned up to me. We deep kissed numerous times. Nothing else besides that.

When she opened up to me, she affirmed me I was safe.

I've read on medhelp and freedomhealth, Dr Hook, Dr Hansfield, Dr Gonzalez - top HIV experts all say there's no risk from getting a blowjob and no documented case.

I've probably read all the post on this forum, medhelp, freedomhealth regarding blowjob/insertive oral sex.

A week after she told me that I went through depression and experienced all sorts of stomach issues due to my anxiety. But I'm okay now.

I really want to move on with my life.

Was I at any risk from my exposures - receiving a blowjob and deep kissing?
Do I really need to get tested?

Sorry to hear the relationship did not work out.

You had no HIV risk, no exposure from kissing and receiving a blowjob. Before you ask, receiving a blowjob isn't an HIV risk to you regardless of your friend's treatment status or viral load.

Your friend did mention they are on treatment, so ill add as a future reference, that once a person living with HIV (PLHIV) is on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and has achieved an undetectable viral load* in their blood for at 6+ months, they can not sexually transmit HIV. https://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=71864.0

Do I really need to get tested?

Not over getting a blowjob & kissing as you had no exposure.

However, you should as you are sexually active test out of standard routine at least yearly for HIV & STI's.

Here's what you need to know to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about taking PrEP as an additional layer of HIV protection

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get tested regularly and at least yearly for STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and, the only way of knowing is by testing.

Thank you for your reply Jim. The two blowjobs I received from her are the only sexual encouters I've had in my life until now.

Last question, does saliva contact during a blowjob pose any risks - on your glans/urethra? I've read countless times on this forum and other forums that saliva is not infectious. Do you mind explain this?

Hiya,

When I said and I presume the countless others that you read said getting a blowjob is no HIV risk, zero cases, we had already taken into account that every blowjob received in human history also means contact with saliva and fluids.

Anyhow, in short, saliva does not contain viable HIV, some defective copies and saliva is also hostile towards HIV. It corrodes (breaks down) the outer receptors HIV needs to infect human cells.

Not really much more to it.

I've learnt so much about HIV transmission thanks to this forum and other reputable forums out there. Never thought, never imagined I'd be in this situation.

Now I can move on with my life with peace and stop googling.
