HIV and heart disease...
« on: November 07, 2011, 08:37:54 am »
Please make sure you take any challenges regarding your heart seriously.  Recently my good friend and enormous HIV/AIDS care, human rights and HIV education and prevention advocate died suddenly of a heart attack at his desk, at work at a Birmingham ASO.  He was not old.

We were all devastated at first, and now the frustration is setting in.  I am guilty of high cholesterol not completely controlled, lack of exercise and shrugging off triglycerides, and elevated blood pressure.  I guess in the back of my head I'm still 'young' so I haven't taken it as seriously as I should.

PLEASE be proactive in this matter.  Experts have suspected for years there would be increased risk for heart attack and disease for HIV individuals.  Be sure to mention your heart concerns the next time you see your doctor, and take a low-dose aspirin every day if your provider deems it appropriate.

Here is an older report from a respected M.D: http://aids.about.com/od/otherconditions/a/hiv_heart.htm  Please share any relevant or more recent information about this phenomenon in these forums for me and for others.

Personally speaking, I take the issue of heart disease very seriously, stemming from both a terrible family history and it's relation to being HIV positive.  This is one topic, in my opinion, that can't be talked about enough and while my cholesterol and blood pressure remain good for now I have read every thread on the subject with much respect and a strong desire to learn what I can do to lessen it as an issue for both myself and my wife.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, such a shame... you have my condolences.
I despise the song Love is in the Air, you should too.

We had an appropriate memorial for him yesterday.  The Magic City Choir (me included!) sang three numbers, several people close to him spoke, and a female impersonator sang What a Friend We Have In Jesus and she didn't lip-sync.  It was really quite beautiful.

Of course there were hymns, and a priest in our choir rose to the occasion and officiated.  We then went to the ASO where my friend worked and celebrated his life.

It was a perfect balance of reverence and levity.
