Africa - here we come!
« on: February 09, 2014, 08:25:47 am »
Today is the day!  After almost 2 years of planning, Sid and I leave at 6:00 tonight for our safari in Tanzania.  I will be silent on hear for the next 12 days or so (some of you will be quite happy with that) as there will be no connections in the Serengeti.

I will post some pics as soon as I can upon my return.  In the meantime, enjoy this little diddy

Have fun Mike, and don't get eaten by any lions! ;D

I'm expecting loads of photos when you get back - and at least a few of elephants, my all-time favourite animal.

Sounds like a great trip! Please share photos. I wouldn't mind going on safari provided I can travel in a hermetically sealed, climate controlled, predator proof Pope mobile.

Didn't see a single bug or snake in any of the photos. That's fine with me.

Have a great time and a wonderful birthday. It all looks gorgeous. I'm with Ann on those wonderful elephants though I think giraffes are pretty special too.

Big cheers!

Safari is over, waiting to leave Tanzania.  Should land in D.C. Friday afternoon.

AMAZING!!!!!!  Is not a strong enough word.  We saw everything except a cheetah.... We even saw 4 elusive leopards laying on trees.  Ann - literally hundreds of elephants!  Will post some pics in the days after I get home.

You also missed 6 inches of snow in Richmond, which is equivalent to 18" in Philly. Told you it was coming, just missed the dates slightly.

I'd like to see pictars zoo -- though I've still not finished editing the ones I took in France 8 months ago.

The snow wouldn't have bothered them nomatter where they were as they had that eye-catching  hermetically sealed vehicle. Not even a skeeter bite I'm sure.

OK -- I'm being way slow at going through and organizing my pics, so here are a few to tide you all over.  Assuming I remember how to do this.....

Sid and I about to enter someplace I'd dreamed of going since childhood

Here is an elusive leopard -- lounging in a tree:

Here is a momma and her baby (for you Ann....)

Some VERY close lions....

Giraffes (for Andy....)

More lions - just because big cats are always popular

More to come -- I promise.........

Ummm, no.....  That is actually a "Survivor buff" (from the TV show).  I pulled it up over my nose and mouth on the drive to the Serengeti to protect from the dust.  Tanzanian roads are horrendous!
Fear not - most laws were observed, when one hears hyenas on the other side of the tent each night, sodomy doesn't "come up" much!

These are great pics.  You have been planning this trip of a lifetime for several years.  So inspiring that you actually did it!  Makes me wonder what would ever happen if we had an AMG safari.... would the jungle ever be same again?

Welcome back...looking forward to more pictures.

The only "big" animal that we didn't see while in Tanzania.  These folks certainly had an AMAZING experience this day:

Mike! I don't know how I managed to miss your update with photos, but I did. Thank you ever so much for the elephant photo, it's just perfect. I'd love to see more! :)

I would love to chance to see those animals in their own environment . I cant bring myself to go to zoos anymore because I feel badly for the animals there but that trip looks amazing .

I've been going through my photos and videos looking for something that helps capture what it was like to be in these places.  Nothing I have really does it -- I did finally stumble upon this youTube video though.  It shows what we experienced while in the Ngorongoro Crater (The Ngorongoro Crater in Northern Tanzania, once a gigantic volcano, is the largest intact caldera in the world).  The density of wildlife in this location is amazing.

This video is about 8 mins long, but it has some beautiful shots -- I really loved seeing the little jackal steal some food from a feeding lion.......

Enjoy

I will try and post one of our own videos shortly -- of our visit to a Maasai village and their welcome ceremony.

Here are two short ones - once you click over to my photobucket site, they take a little bit to download..

First -- the Maasai dancing and chanting a welcome (notice their shoes -- made from old motorcycle tires):

This one shows Sid dancing along with them (but not jumping).....

Hope this all works......

Enjoy,
Mike

I love how they jump ;D Very cool. I love the purple red blankets.

Some of them had beautiful neck collars, I guess the females? Were they made of bone or ivory?

They do know how to JUMP.....   One of the guys from on tour (an emergency care physician from Montreal), went out and jumped with them -- he actually did a pretty good job too.  I'd post the video here, but not without his permission......

The neck collars are on the females -- of course, we bought a couple (they make great plate chargers...  it is very intricate bead work, I mean TINY, little beads.

Mike was kind enough to send me a requested souvneer . I collect stones and minirals so I asked him at some point while he was in Africa to reach down on the ground a pick up a small stone and think about me for a moment . He did this for me and I have the handsome little stone in my collection now . It may seem like an odd request but its my way of sharing my love of travel ... and a way to be there in spirit .

It was an honor to send you a little bit of Africa, Jeff.
I am so glad that you jumped into my thoughts while at the Oldupai Gorge (it's real name, NOT Odluvai), where humankind is thought to have started, as you are a fine example of that species!!

This has been on my bucket list for so long, wish I could have joined Mike and Sid.

Jen is not keen an Africa at all, I lived in Mombasa for 3 years but was too young to really appreciate it (12).

Mike, I love that you and Sid got to go to Africa and see all those beautiful animals, Jen and I are off in two weeks to spend time in Thailand with our foster Elephants.

That sounds like a blast.  I'd love to do something like that.
