« on: March 29, 2012, 06:09:09 pm »
if so it  requires a little  advanced planning...contact with a  congressman to get a  reserved slot  ( date/time) and  some  detail info about yourself   for the application...

I have  asked my local  congressman for the  details of info needed  to get a small group into the tour...... anyone interested???

Sure Nick, I'd like to go to the White House, that would be a once in a lifetime visit I would say.  I believe Robert has also indicated he too would like a tour.  You ex-presidents have a lot of pull NIck- ;)

I would definitely be interested.  If you end up with more interest than slots, I will step out, as I have been before.

I went, pre-9/11.  We had to line up at a kiosk across the street from the WH very early to get a timed-entry ticket.  There were only so many each day and once they were gone, that was it.

Thanks for looking into this Nick.

I am interested.  Even though I lived in DC for over five years, I have never visited inside the White House.

I would like to do this but I suppose I should get my flight and hotel room booked before I go making plans.

hi guys.

Here is some info.

Pls note tours are offered only Tues - Saturday.

Security Information: submit every group member's first name, full middle name, last name, date of birth, Social Security Number, US Citizenship (y/n), country of citizenship (for non-US citizens), gender, and city and state of current residence.

White House tours are only available Tuesday - Saturday morning.
A two month advance notice is required.
Requests may be submitted up to 6 months in advance
New restrictions implemented by the U.S. Secret Service require security information to be submitted for every person requesting a tour of the White House. Requests MUST include Security Information. If there is any security information missing from your request, we will be unable to submit the White House tour request, and no tour will not be granted.
Please keep in mind that the security information submitted for each group member must match his or her government identification presented upon entering the White House.
Due to the volume of requests, the White House is often fully booked several months in advance.

You need the names, etc when you submit your application so for those of you going you need to send Nick a PM with the appropriate info.   This should be done ASAP

Nick, I would help you with this but right now the whole adventure is still up in the air for me.  Due to as conflict with Mike's schedule it looks like I might miss this year's Gathering which does not make me very happy.  I will know for sure by the end of April if I can come.  Let's keep our fingers crossed !@@~~!

Residents respond to rash of hate crimes in D.C.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/in-dc-worries-over-sex-bias-crime-prod-600-to-join-walk-of-silence/2012/03/20/gIQA9GqfQS_story.html?wpisrc=nl_lunchln

The recent rash of hate crimes in the D.C. area is beyond disturbing . And last night, hundreds of people decided to speak up about it, without in fact saying a word. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and three D.C. Council members joined a crowd of 600 in a silent walk from the IHOP in Columbia Heights, where one of the incidents occurred, and past various crime scenes on their way to a Dupont Circle fundraiser. The Post's Robert Samuels reports on the march to protest the brutal acts of hatred.

OK  I got the  format the  office  wants us to use  to request a tour...I will have it in a PDF file  to be sent to each person who  gives me an email address.....this allows you to "comment " or  "fill in the Blanks"  sort of...with the correct information in a form acceptable to the Secret Service  who will "review/approve"  each one.....  we wont know until 2 or 3 weeks ahead  which tour  we will get..

the  tours are from 7:30  AM  till 1:00PM   every 30 mins.....if  anyone  CANT  make a certain time  be sure to let me know  because the more open we  are on time  the more likely we can get a group tour.  For us  only  Friday or  Saturday are possible  since there are none on Sunday or Monday.

PM  me  for  my email address

I know there use to be (may still) two kinds of tours.  One was the more common Self-guided tour.  The other was Congressional Guided Tour, which took groups of 70 people.  This tour was longer and you got to see more.  I'm not sure if your actual Congressperson gave the tour or a member of their staff.  This may have changed.  Don't know.

I have heard of advocacy groups, health groups, etc, either writing their Congressperson or the office of the First Lady for special tours.  Hey, it wouldn't hurt to write Mrs. Obama's office to see about getting a special tour for an HIV group visiting the capital.  If they say no, then no big deal.  But, if they said yes, then you'd know everyone would get in and would probably get to see a little more.  In any event, I know she often greets visitors several times per month.  I love her and would love to meet her.  When volunteering for the KY/S. Indiana Obama Campaign, we got a private meet and greet with then Sen. Obama.  But, I wanted to meet her.

I'm trying to see, if my partner and I will be able to attend this summer.  He's got a conference at NASA in Florida around that time, so not sure how things will work out.  I would love to visit the White House again.  I was last there on a school trip.  We got to see the rooms in the lower cross-hall and then the more known rooms on the main floor.  You then are taken out the front door to the North Lawn, where you can take pix.  I'm a big White House history buff.  For example, the White House as it is now is only about 60 years-old.  It was completely gutted, except for the exterior walls under Truman.  The floors, walls, rooms, etc were rebuilt using steel beams.  So, Abe never actually walked those halls.  But, I digress big-time.
