I am going to see Slayer and Marilyn Manson tomorrow and when I mention this to my friends they look at me crosseyed. I love Metal!!! Don't get me wrong, I love Madonna, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys..etc. I really like hard rock from speed metal to glam rock. I went to see Poison and Ratt last weekend and had the time of my life.
I wish people where more diverse with their taste in music outside of what "is expected" of them...
Am I alone here ?
-
Funny I was walking my dog today and hear Metal coming from a house and I was like "who the fuck enjoys this in a house???" I can't think of Metal being enjoyed as something you would want to listen alone ??? But I agree this is not what gets me off. Give me some underground jungle with a taste of metal then I'll go off :D
Milker.
-
nope, you're not alone. i've posted some manson in my lyric's picks thread. not so much into speed metal, but i like a lot of the old hair bands. and glam always. i will try music of all sorts of types. if it hits me, it hits me.
-
Of course you're not alone! Although I rarely hear metal outside of live music venues, I do appreciate it. And although the CDs were stolen when I was buglarized 3 years ago, I am very partial to some of the forefathers of metal, particularly Killing Joke and Chrome.
Unfortunately, I find in my middle age that at a loud volume, it can give me a headache. Hydrocephalous does not become my silver hair.
Edited to say I meant that I consider Killing Joke and Chrome as forefathers of speed metal

listening to Mother Love Bone now, actually.
-
I love Mother Love Bone.... Chole Dancer/Crown of Thorns is my fave song.....\\\
-
Hello PeteNYNJ, I am a hetero female but I love Metal. The First 5 Albums from Metallica are my favorite.I've Been to see Metallica Twice. This mother Love Bone you speak of. Was Chris Cornell(Soundgarden) in that band. Temple of the Dog, (1 album) is another of my Favorites. I am going to OZZfest on August 28th. It's free this year. I saw Type o Negative and Pantera in Concert . White Zombie, NIN . I get funny looks when I'm riding down the road listening to "Ride the Lightning" or" Kill Em All "- Very Loudly. Be you and like what you like, If no one else likes it, Fuck em.. Wish I could go with you. I'm not much on Slayer but like Marilyn Manson.. Later, Cristy

Is Marilyn really Metal?
-
I don't care for metal or rap, but it's to each is own.
-
Bring on the Tesla, Bring on AC/DC, bring on Def leopard..I can go on...hey, my hair used to fly back and forth...all you metal know what I'm sayin!
After all, she's my cherry pie!!!
-
Is Marilyn really Metal?
um no..he/she...is grunge goth...not in the same league...
-
I was in the 8th row of the Def Leppard show with Tesla opening.
Writhe in jealousy, metal heads.
-
I saw Def Leppard in '88 when I didn't even KNOW who Tesla was, lol. Tim, I LOVE Tesla's song "Changes," I might post it in the Lyrics thread.
I love hard rock and metal, too. To the Nth degree. See the quote under my picture? Now who is that from, boys and girls? Jammin' to Godsmack and Fuel now, actually have a sentimental biker jacket with "Metallica" painted on the back. It belonged to my late husband. I wear it when I'm going to a dive and trying to blend, lol!
Faves: IRON MAIDEN, MEGADETH, Metallica, Priest, Queensryche, Ozzy, Dio, old Motley Crue, Scorpions, Skid Row, Tesla, Godsmack, Panterra, Whitesnake, the list goes on. I can sing and scream their tunes like a fuckin' banshee!!!!!!!
I used to have a personals header that read "Apple Pie or Cherry?" Some guys actually replied saying "Apple with a scoop of vanilla, " and I knew..... they..... just..... didn't..... get it, lol!
I loved the shock factor of listening to Metal in HS. I was the new girl at a new school in 9th grade, dating a long-haired rebel (who would become my husband 10 years later), getting straight A's, making the Pom Squad and getting "Most School Spirit", and to this day still have never done drugs (except for Sustiva and a few other necessary ones)!
All the bitches were busy listening to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.....a girl can only take so much!

Put it this way, Cindy: in another thread, when you mention August as "Blackie's" birthday, the first thing I thought was...."Lawless". ;)
-
Ah, yes, Timtation, I have a male friend who says "Wild Child" reminds him of me. He made me a CD of crazy metal tunes and put my pic on the face of it, lol (c.2001, see below)....and don't even get me started on L.O.V.E. Machine..............Incredible tunes, incredible!

I love metal, but more old metal. I like Judas Priest, LUV Ozzy, AC/DC, Led Zepplin.
Cin-
I was the new girl at my high school also and was jammin' to Deep Purple. I never was a cheerleader however; I was "zoned" in high school constantly, always skipping classes, assemblies, shooting up in the alleys behind school, until one day they kicked me out for selling drugs (who'da thought that was illegal to do on school property). ;)

You'd have been one of my best friends back in the dim days of Weymouth North High School. I may not have been shooting up, but I was for sure dropping, popping and smoking anything I could get my greasy little hands on. I was born in 1960 and was therefore a genuine-article 70s teenager. Although I eventually moved over to disco and punk rock, the soundtrack of my adolescence was entirely old-school Paleometal:

I love all those bands especially Metallica. I got to see Queensryche in 1998 either at Charlotte or Raleigh Amphitheater, can't remember which one. My brother used to listen to some band called King Diamond, I think they became SOD(Stormtroopers Of Death). Weird stuff. Love this thread. Cristy(edited so it would read correctly) Who knows every word on the first 5 Metallica albums. Metal power.

Bettytacy~
I never did the drugs, was too scared to because of the diabetes, so that in itself kept me grounded! My BF, on the other hand, was into all of that stuff. He would later become my husband in '94. Anyways, he got me hooked on all of the tunes, as he was a musician, I just never dabbled in drugs, not even weed, lol!
cjc~
Queensryche is awesome! Hell, I can't even hit those high notes like Geoff Tate does. Well, maybe on a good day, lol!
Keep rockin' GFs!

The glam / hair bands of the '80's were REALLY bad, to me. Brent's list was more along the lines of what I listened to, along with disco, dance, alternative, etc. The old metal bands really did have talent, but when the bands became more engineered, I lost interest. With the hair / glam bands, I liked certain songs, but non of the groups in general. Of course, seeing a show live could be entirely different. As to rap... some of the old, original rap (Run-D.M.C., Curtis Blow, etc) were fairly original, and I liked them o.k. - I could understand the lyrics. I guess that's one thing that bothers me about later rap and most metal... WTF are they screaming?

true metal is good, but I could never get into what I call "Glam Arena Rock" (Poison, Cinderella and all the make up half drag 80's rock bands)
Now..if we are talking Black Sabbath, Metalica, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, now that is good metal.
Not sure where KISS would fall, but I was fanatical about KISS until 5th or 6th grade, it must have been the make up and my attraction to Paul Stanley ;D

Puh-leeze. If KISS isn't glam, nothing is.

Tim, you never did tell me if Mother Love Bone had Chris Cornell in it. Sorry for the hijack but I just NEED to know. Cristy
-
Nope. Cornell was not in MLB, but he was a part of Temple of the Dog.

Oh yes, That is one of my favorites, even though it's not metal. They only did 1 album. thanks, Tim. Cristy

I was Paul Stanley for Halloween one year with a BF and his two buddies. We were "Dressed to Kill," just like the album cover, and took second place to some dork dressed as a jukebox. I need to scan that damn picture! LOL

Hell NO, you are not alone, just found this thread, I have been rocking out for well, since I was a kid!
-
Well I played bass in a rock band for many years - hence the nick. My favourite band of all time is RUSH; not exactly metal, but I just love the silly time signatures, clanging basslines and Geddy Lee's stratospheric vocals.
Can't wait to see them live in Manchester in October, for the nth time! (I forget how many it is now!)
Carl
Manchester, UK
-
Hey Carl, I'm a RUSH fan too! I always liked they way they borrowed so much from classical literature. But I'm geeky like that sometimes. ;D
Ann
-
Count me in the Rush camp as well. I used to date a guy who was totally into them so I got into them as well.
BTW - the Slayer/Manson show was awesome.
I went to see Justin Timberlake and Good Charlotte last night. Great show as well.
I am a man of many tastes :)
-
Interesting thread. Makes me think that this cuts both ways. If I were to start listening to Barbara Streisand, Cher, and Madonna with conviction, people would assume I am a pretty big 'mo. Now, if I gay guy is listening to metal or other said "straight" music, people wouldn't necessarily huddle and whisper "that dude is totally straight." Kind of an odd double standard, I think.
But both sides will kind of question the taste of playing "outside your domain." Group mentality, I guess.
Pete, I say you're cool in my book. Listen to what you like. Metal or otherwise. Just rock out while you're doing it.
Chap
(who admits he sings "Get Happy" by Judy Garland from time to time)
-
Hey Chaplin
I get shocked looks all the time when people find out I am gay. I guess it is because I dont fit into their sterotype - I love metal, I chill with lots of straight dudes, I can hold my own in a fight, I have no Lisp or anything they consider gay. It is so funny because I am so gay...I love dick. I love madonna.
I just wish more people could just chill and be well rounded
Pete's fave bands:
Hole
Marilyn Manson
Pet Shop Boys
Motley Crue
Poison
Erasure
New Order
Madonna
cinderella
Justin Timberlake
Brand New
Good Charlotte
Sex Pistols
Joy Division
The Clash
-
;D Well that's three Rush fans so far. We have taste! :D
You know it always amazes me, they've released 18 studio albums, 5 live albums, who knows how many "greatest hits" compilations, they're currently in the middle of a sellout world stadium tour promoting "Snakes and Arrows" and have a career spanning more than three decades.
But when mention them, everyone goes - "Who?"
Go figure, as they'd say.
Carl
(who's currently listening to "Far Cry" from Snakes and Arrows)

edited for typo's.

I've seen Aerosmith, GodSmack and Linkin Park so far this season. Beastie Boys are tomorrow night.
Saw AC/DC back in the 70's as an opening act for Day on the Green at Oakland Coliseum, with Rick Derringer, Ronnie Montrose and Edgar Winter Band.
Listening to the new Saliva album now. Current playlist includes:
Alice in Chains
Alterbridge
Audioslave
Blue Oyster Cult
Jeff Beck
Korn
Kyuss
Led Zeppelin
Nine Inch Nails
Rancid
Rammstein
Sammy Hagar
Tool
Heck, I listen to everything from Ella Fitzgerald to Frankie Goes to Hollywood to Pink Floyd (for hours on end).
Rock Rules!
-
Yeah Metal Rules! But I also like classical music. Especially composers like Bruckner. I noticed that many of the folks I know who like metal, also like classical a lot. How about you metal lovers?
My current iTunes play list:
-Slayer
-Tool
-NIN
-Probot
-Voivod
-Perfect Circle
-Metallica
-Pantera
-Rammstein
-System of a down
For the rest also lots of jazz, like The Pat Metheny Group and Chet Baker.
...euhm, but I'm not a homo

didn't Tull actually win a grammy for heavy metal album of the year awhile back? tee hee....heavy metal flute. those grammy people are so with it.
i like tull, but i don't see them so much as metal.
-
Oh, I like my rock with a metal edge, within reason. If all I hear is bass and something that sounds like someone is trying to cough up a 10 pound hairball after smoking a carton of cigarettes and gargling razorblades and you can't make out a word they are "singing", I'll usually laugh hysterically at how awful I think it is.
On the other hand, I like Metallica, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Dio, Korn, Rage Against the Machine, etc.
Mostly I like anything but what passes itself off as country music these day and don't really care for hip hop or ambient.
-
Gay Metalhead here!
We can't forget Danzig guys.
Alice in Chains has gotten a new singer, just found that out on youtube cause this thread made me crave a Lane fix.
