HASA NYC
« on: January 08, 2014, 08:03:50 pm »
Does anyone have any experience with HASA. I'm in a tight spot now and not sure if they will help with my income. I got referred there by a social worker. I'm losing my place by Saturday but it's more complicated then that.

I used HASA when I applied for SSDI but was waiting for it to be approved -- they paid my rent for several months. I think you're required to have had, at any point since diagnosis, a cd4 count <200 to qualify (mind you, this was 12 years ago) and I had proof of this from 1993 so my case was immediately approved. I can see you had such counts upon diagnosis so you should be approved.

You need to go to their offices and sit there for a couple hours and see the people that approve such things. I don't know how fast they can work magic by Saturday but I guess you will find out. I'd not dither around with this -- wake up and be there tomorrow morning when they open.

Don't forget to take copies of your lab work -- there are other things they will want I'm sure. Copies of your lease, maybe utility bills -- I don't know. You need to find the information somewhere before going to their office. Did you social worker tell you what documents you will need to present?

She told me they will call to verify labs with my social worker and dr, I guess that's how it's done now. To only go with my pay stubs and ID I was told.

Does anyone know of a good ASO in nyc. HRA/HASA has caused more trouble for me then they have solved. My worker knows nothing and asked me questions about stuff she should be telling me. I'm just lost and confused and need someone or some place that can actually answer my questions.

Start off with a case manager at GMHC -- but if I were you I would go to one of the new "integrated" care facilities/HIV clinics where case management is done in house.

This place is supposedly very good, but you'd be switching your medical care there too if you choose this: http://centerforcare.org

Miss P the center for care is my place but they referred me out. The social worker there was non to helpful. The GMHC sounds like the place to go. I don't even know how to get a place, they didn't explain to me how the voucher works. Just don't know what to do.

Oh, when I used HASA I already had an apartment/lease so it was just a matter of their sending payments to my landlord. From what you seem to be saying is that you don't have an apartment at all and are expecting case management to locate one for you? I'm not sure if they do that which might be why you're running up against a brick wall, but then again I wasn't in that situation so I'm not sure what to advise.

I think you should go here and skip GMHC then: http://housingworks.org/heal/housing-resources/

Good luck and keep us posted.

Oh no, I know I'm supposed to look myself but they aren't being clear. Like how do I sign a lease if they have to approve it. Like I don't know where to begin. How to go about getting an apartment.

Thank you I checked out that link, thank you Miss P!!!!

I also recall from your surgery postings/threads that you have a partner -- is he also HIV+ and disabled or is he not living with you. How is this figuring into your conversations with case workers and HASA?

Now that I think of it Housing Works should really be the appropriate place for you -- they've been around for decades and know the system, plus do a lot of advocacy and private fundraising.

Like I said, my situation was very different from yours and thus easier to solve, though I empathize with your undoubtedly high stress levels.
