Devastated
« on: November 30, 2023, 11:44:41 am »
Hello everyone,
Apologies if this post is not easy to understand as English isn’t my first language and I’m really tired so I can’t focus very well.
About two months ago I had insertive anal sex with a female sex worker and the condom unfortunately broke. I guess i was exposed for 30 seconds max. However less than two weeks later I began experiencing symptoms most of them are still persistent.
Some of these symptoms are: fever, extreme chills, diarrhea, rash on both of my upper arms, swollen lymph nodes on my neck and armpits, what seems to be oral thrush with a very bitter taste occasionally, extreme fatigue and a mild sore throat.
I got tested a few days ago at the 8 weeks mark 4th gen (eclia) and rna pcr qualitative for hiv 1&2 and somehow both came back negative.
So what are my chances here of my test being negative at three months? Should I continue testing if it comes back negative? I’m feeling really hopeless at the moment and I don’t have access to a doctor who can guide me through this.

Read your post three times, insertive anal sex, and the condom broke.

It has nothing to do with HIV from the encounter with the sex worker.

Well, you need one by the sounds of it, so do try so they can treat what is causing you to feel unwell instead of stressing about HIV, and I hope you feel better soon.

Perfect, a non-reactive result from a blood-draw (lab) HIV antibody test six weeks after potential exposure rarely ever changes and you tested at eight weeks. Retesting at three months generally isn't needed.

Move on with your life.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier-acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; testing is the only way to know.

Kind regards

Jim

Thank you for the advice.

I’m stressing about HIV because I have strong suspicions that the sex worker has untreated HIV for a few reasons, but I’m not sure if you’re interested in hearing them. Though one thing I learned is that test results overrule everything else. I’m going to get tested at three months for my peace of mind, and in the meantime I’ll try to sort out the doctor situation.

Well she had a substantial purple rash on her left thigh, also her tongue seemed abnormally white, like nothing I’ve seen before. Plus she offered sex without a condom for an extra fee, so I don’t think she was concerned about her health.

Right, so none of this is relevant or can diagnose HIV.

She could have fucked the entire village without a condom and be HIV negative or only once and be living with HIV.  A rash on the thigh means nothing whatsoever, shit, people have rashes all the time, because of just about everything, and nothing at all. As for the white tongue, well it could be thrust. Still, nearly the entire adult population will have a thrush overgrowth at some stage, regardless of HIV status.

It could have been worse; I was expecting you to mention her nationality or skin colour or profession as a reason, that would have been really stupid, sadly it's mentioned often enough, so at least it wasn't that.

Yeah, do see a doctor, as your issues have nothing to do with your HIV status. I hope you feel better soon. As for retesting, it really isn't needed, but if it gives you peace of mind go ahead, but when you get a non-reactive result, when you retest, accept it and forget about this.

I reset your post count by one, so you got one additional post for free.

Thank you very much for the valuable feedback and reassurance.

I’m not normally a paranoid person and I’m fully aware that HIV is not a death sentence. But getting HIV now would really fuck me up, as I’m living in a country where testing positive for HIV would get you immediately deported, and I’m from country that is in absolute chaos right now and people get killed for nothing and the healthcare system is collapsing, so you could only imagine life there as a person living with HIV. Thank you again and I hope that I didn’t bother you with my questions.

No, you didn't mention aliens from outer space or livestock so we're all good.  ;)
