Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Confused even after negative result.

Hey guys...kudos to all u ppl on the forum...u r doin a great job.

Let me explain my situation in a nut shell. I am 26yr male from india. My exposure was Unprotected vaginal sex with a chinese prostitute. I did experience few symptoms   which i assume to be ARS and got myself tested in a govt hospital for hiv 4 and half months post exposure. The test result was negative. However the problem is when i enquired the nurse abt de test performed she told me the test was Elisa First generation. Later when i called the hospital to clarify it, another person responded by sayin they actually do fourth generation test and not first generation. Seems lke thy don have any idea of which test they are performing. My worries started when i noticed swelling behind one of my knee which i again assume is due to swelling of lymph node.
1. Can i take assurance from the negative result which i got or shld i retest?
2.If the test was actually first generation, will it detect Hiv-2?
3.First generation elisa test post 4 months is conclusive for Hiv1 or is it 6 months?
4. Is it possible for blood banks and hospitals to stil use first generation tests or are they obsolete?
5. During the so called ARS symptoms which i had, one noticeable thing was the peeling of my finger tips. Now its almost 7 months post exposure and i cant feel anythin with my finger tips. The skin feels lke plastic. Can this symptom n swelling behind the knee be caused by hiv?

I am losing my sleep over this even after a negative result. Awaiting your advise please.

Testing for HIV should be done at 6 weeks, past your possible exposure and your test at 4 1/2 months is conclusive, you are HIV negative.  Any symptoms you are experiencing are not the result of HIV infection and you should consult with your doctor if you are concerned about these symptoms.

Our role here is risk assessment and you have conclusively tested negative for HIV.

Many thanks for the prompt reply.

One last ques...if the test performed was actually first generation 4 months post exposure, can i take it conclusive for both hiv1 and 2. or is it conclusive only for hiv 1

I cannot comment on which test you may have received.  If you have questions regarding the generation of testing used, you would need to contact your medical facility to obtain more information.  I can only comment on the fact that you have conclusively tested negative for HIV.
