Ignore Boards option on SMF?
« on: July 09, 2017, 11:52:16 am »
I'll preface this by saying I know the poz forums software has been modified/tweaked so the suggestion below may not be an option ... but figured I'd ask.

After asking an SMF related question yesterday I hopped over to my vanity website and installed SMF 2.0.7 for fun.  I noticed one feature I think would be useful here -- the ability to ignore specific boards, like Am I Infected, so posts in those boards don't display when you're viewing most sections of the forums.

If anyone wants to see this in action you can register at the site below (before I uninstall SMF in a few days!) and try it yourself:

https://sweetoldbob.com/smf207/index.php

Registration is instant and you can enter a bogus email address as long as it appears to be valid (e.g., fred@fred.com) -- I'm not trying to harvest emails, I promise! Once you register go into the modify profile section and select "Ignore Boards Options"  and check off the board(s) to ignore.

After you save your changes return to the home page and you should notice fewer entries in "Recent Posts."  Since I'm lazy I only added a handful of "posts," mostly gobbledygook, but enough to give one an idea of how the feature works.  Feel free to add your own gobbledygook since everything will disappear within a week or so.  Also, ignoring a board doesn't prevent you from seeing the board or viewing posts in it, it only hides posts in lists of recent posts on the main page and the new posts list.

An Administrator can set up the option but it's pretty simple and I'll be happy to point someone to the setting since SMF administration can be tricky if you don't do it often (or you're a forgetful moron like me).

Hi Bill, you can simply collapse that part of the forum as well by clicking the minus sign at the top right corner of the AM I forum.

Hi Wade,

Thanks for your reply!  I know I can collapse boards and apologize for not being more clear with examples of using this option.

here's a list of topics with no boards ignored:

here's the "same" list after changing the Ignore Boards options:

So, here at poz, if one checked off "Am I Infected?" and "Estoy Infectado?" the posts from those boards wouldn't display in lists.  Users wouldn't even see them and could see posts from sections they use.

I know this isn't that important but since the forums seem to get the heaviest use in those 2 sections but many of us users don't care about those posts I thought it would be a semi-useful addition, if it's an option that can be used here at all.

Thanks again!
