ACK!! I screwed up my Truvada Dosage! What do I do????
« on: November 30, 2009, 06:25:32 pm »
I am supposed to take Truvada once a day (at night). I took it last night and then woke up and took it again this morning (my mind was elsewhere), so I took it twice in 12 hours. I realized it immediately and tried to throw it up but couldnt.

I have a call in to my clinic, but they havent called back yet, which unfortunately is not unusual. Sometimes it is the next day before they ahve a chance to call back.

My question is...Do I take it again tonight as originally scheduled? This would mean 3 does in 24 hrs, which is 3 times prescribed amount. Or  do I skip a day? The Truvada website is rather vague with "Do not take more than 1 dose of Truvada in a day" uhhhh, too late for that. and nothing on their website addresses my particular situation.

Second question....Now that I've already taken 2 doses in a 24 hour period, will this create resistance issues in and of itself???

FYI my regimin is Prezista/Norvir every morning and Prezista/Norvir/ Truvada every night.

Resistance comes from too little of the drug circulating in your blood, not from too much.  The problem with too much is that these are nasty drugs and too much can hurt you.

As far as getting back on schedule, don't take another one until at least 24 hours have gone by from the last one (otherwise you would be overdosing for 24 hours instead of for only 12).  Since you are taking meds twice a day anyway you could just shift the Truvada to morning until you hear back from the doctor.  But as there is some lingering half life of the drug, you can probably wait more than 24 hours.  Of course, if you wait 36 hours you are back on your regular schedule anyway.  If you'd been undetectable for a while, I'd just wait the 36 hours, but since you are still getting there, maybe waiting til you hear back from the doc . . .

Good luck

1) There's not much reason to call your doctor -- I probably do this once a year.  If you were doing it a lot it would stress your kidney (or is it the liver?) but screwing up from time to time is just part of the deal.  You folks need to not panic so much.  Do you really think your going to take meds for 20 - 40 years with no dosing errors?  Not to mention if doing so really was an emergency don't you think there'd be a huge warning label on the bottle instructing you to rush to an ER?

2) As far as getting back on your schedule, you can always just switch it from now on and do it in the mornings.  If you take it again tonight then it's just like doing what you did twice in a row.

Thx, Assurb and Miss P,
Yes, of course, I'll just switch my Truvada to the morning, dont know why that didnt occur to me  :) I suppose I was too fixated on keeping Truvada at night...

Miss P, as far as "You folks need to stop panicking"...you'll know it when I panic, this is far from it!

Willy, I keep track of my dosing by dispensing from a weekly pill box.  That way there's no need to remember later if you took your meds - just look in the box.  I still keep the Norvir in the fridge.  Supposedly it can be left at room temperature for up to a month, but I feel better knowing it's chilled.

If you want to move your Truvada dosing time back to where it was, just take it several hours earlier each day for several days.
It's a complex world

Blue,

Yes I "usually" keep all my pills in a pill box, however I got lazy and forgot to reload the pill box last week so was just dosing them straight from the individual bottles. BIG mistake....back to pillbox.

Aztecan...LOL, you are getting rusty in your old age, they were 529's not 501's!!! and yes...you definately know how to make me squirm :-*

I keep my pills in the kitchen where I can see them... in a glass cabinet.  I keep everything next to one another and have a routine to take them each morning.

Right now I'm on a HIV drug holiday.... liver toxicity....

Anyhow, I also use Gmail Calendar to remind me.  It can be setup to send a text message and an email... which make it hard to ignore.... I have an "appointment" daily at 9am with "TM"  Which i know stands for Take Meds... but nobody else has to know that.

Gmail is free and it will work with any phone to send text messages.

Good luck!
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.
