Update: It's MRSA! Huzzah!
« on: July 08, 2007, 07:23:58 pm »
Greetings and saluations, old friends!

I've been... uh... doing French stuff.  Yes.

I've also been... doing nothing of note.

Although, I would like for Matty to know that I now know five different ways to say "bloody diarrhea" in French... which I'm sure he'd love to know in order to be able to describe what comes from a Francophone's mouth when they speak French.

Oh... and I have a serious question.  Does anyone know anything about being a staph carrier?  I am currently getting over another case of cellulitis (a.k.a. "giant boil") which I have named Rasputin, and which has managed to lodge itself in a glorious ring about my nose over my lip.

I'm not so stupid as to think that HIV and the sudden rash of skin infections are unrelated.  My numbers are good, still... but I guess this is my "Hi, my name is Benj, my face is three times its normal size due a compromised immune system... use a condom" PSA thing.

But... the fact that they've been appearing on my face has made me wonder if I might be possibly one of those people who carries staph in his nostrils.  It doesn't appear to be resistant, as Levaquin seems to make the nasty hugeness on my skin disappear quickly... but it's rather... oh, how to put this diplomatically... annoying.

Seriously, yesterday my upper lip was so swollen that it covered my lower lip, and I looked like a monkey.  I could scare children, but the pain diminishes any amusement.

This cellulitis thing seems to be stress-related.  Pustulio came when I started my new job, and Rasputin came to call as I am quitting smoking.  I'm proud to say that I have not touched baccy in a week.  Go me.  Pretty lungs, fugly face.

It hurties.

Speak soon!

Well honey,

It is possible to be a staph carrier and you should probably speak to your doctor about your cellulitis and other fun things.

I would give you a more detailed answer but now that your boils and whatnots have taken away your good looks you're much less interesting. ;)

How the tables have turned since the Exodus.  One of the plagues upon Egypt was boils for not letting my people go.

The tables have turned for reasons that I can only assume are for me not letting the people come.  Sex on the brain... I have no idea what you're talking about!

If I am making no sense, it's because I'm hopped up on Vicodin (yay!), and haven't slept a full night in days (boo!).

Thanks, Philly.  This is what I get for quitting smoking.  I'm sticking it to the man by continuing to not smoke, though.

Go me!

Seriously... quitting heroin and coke are eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeasy compared to quitting smoking.  I'm justifiably proud of myself, I feel.

I went for Rasputin because this damn cellulitis, much like its namesake, cannot be killed.

But Pustricia is a lovely name.  In fact, I think that's what I will call our first anal baby, Bucko.

But darling, they eventually succeeded in killing Raspuin. I think you'll be stuck with Pustricia for life (what's left of it).

yes there is a relation, I had them all the time when my numbers were lower (not on face though), it does "live" in the nose. Because there were in a Hidden Place, the doctor just cut them out, and now I am somewhat scarred. Maybe he will be able to clean it with a syringe or something. Good luck & hope it passes asap

1) one could argue that we are all colonized with Staphylococcus sp. as it's all over our skin on the best of days.

2) after my last MRSA infection, the doctor told me.."well, we can put Bactroban (mucopuricin) in your nose to kill it, but you'll probably be recolonized in a few weeks regardless..."

3)  glad to see you back online safe and sound

Ooooooh!  I had to go to the ER today because my new abscesses (technically siblings of Rasputin), which I have named Pustricia and Mortimer, were... and this is completely vile... draining into my mouth.

Yes.

So, I freaked out appropriately and asked my friend Kiesha to take me to the ER.

Once there, I was feted with injections of lidocaine into my mouth and a nice big knife opening up my wounds.  This was on the inside of my mouth, mind you.

The doctor and nurse wouldn't stop congratulating me for being stoic... as I didn't cry, but I did tear up a little.  Apparently, they were expecting me to scream and cry... but I have something of a high pain tolerance... and their lives are hard enough... so I don't go for histrionics when having the inside of my cheek sliced and diced.  Because being nice to medical professionals means you get more drugs.  This theory was borne out when the nurse came in with liquid opiates in mass quantities for Your Humble Narrator as a sort of adult lollipop for being a good boy.

Unfortunately, for really disgusting reasons... namely that the innards of this abcess are too thick to come out easily... I still have some remnants stuck in my face still.

So, I have a consult with an oral surgeon in a couple of days to see if everything is healing up OK.  I also have to take Bactrim, as the medical deities think this is MRSA.  If Pustricia and Mortimer don't respond appropriately to the antibiotics, I just might need surgery to have them removed.

On the bright side, they have me on enough Lortab to make William S. Burroughs pass out... so that's all right.

Grr.

Ok you said lips and well all I can think of his darn VeggieTales Song.  Ok you can slap me later!  BTW I hope you lip and mouth gets better!
 :-*

Narrator: "One day while talking with Dr. Archibald, Larry confronts one
of his deepest fears ..."

Larry: "If my lips ever left my mouth, packed a bag and headed south,
that'd be too bad, I'd be so sad."

Archibald: "I see. That'd be too bad, you'd be so sad?"

Larry: "That'd be too bad. If my lips said "adios, I don't like you I
think you're gross," that'd be too bad, I might get mad."

Archibald: "That'd be too bad, you might get mad?"

Larry: "That'd be too bad. If my lips moved to Duluth, left a mess and
took my tooth, that'd be too bad, I'd call my Dad."

Archibald: "That'd be too bad, you'd call your Dad?"

Larry: "That'd be too bad."

Archibald: "Hold it. Did you say your father? Fascinating! So what
you're saying is that if your lips left you ..."

Larry: "That'd be too bad, I'd be so sad, I might get mad, I'd call my
Dad. That be too bad."

Archibald: "That'd be to bad?"
Larry: "That'd be too bad."

Archibald: "Why?"

Larry: "Because I love my lips." [Scatting]

Archibald: "Oh my ... This is more serious than I thought. Larry, tell
me, what do you see here?"

Larry: "Um, that looks like a lip."

Archibald: "And this?"

Larry: "It's a lip!"

Archibald: "And this?"

Larry: "It's a lip, it's a lip, it's a lip lip lip! It's a lip, it's a
lip, it's a lip lip lip! It's a lip, it's a lip, it's a lip lip lip.
Liiiiiiiiiiiips. Lip lip lip."

Archibald: "Larry, tell me about your childhood."

Larry: "When I was just two years old I left my lips out in the cold and
they turned blue. What could I do?"

Archibald: "They turned blue, what could you do?"

Larry: "Oh they turned blue. On the day I got my tooth I had to kiss my
Great Aunt Ruth. She had a beard ... and it felt weird."

Archibald: "My, my. She had a beard and it felt weird?"

Larry: "She had a beard. Ten days after I turned eight, got my lips
stuck in a gate. My friends all laughed. And I just stood there until
the fire department came and broke the lock with a crow bar and I had to
spend the next six weeks in lip rehab with this kid named Oscar who got
stung by a bee - right on the lip - and we couldn't even talk to each
other until the fifth week because both our lips were so swollen, and
when he did start speaking he just spoke Polish and I only knew like
three words in Polish except now I know four because Oscar taught me the
word for lip: Oofta."

Archibald: "Your friends all laughed ... Usta? How do you spell that?"

Larry: "I don't know."

Archibald: "So what you're saying is that when you were young ..."

Larry: "They turned blue, what could I do? She had a beard and it felt
weird. My friends all laughed ... Oofta!"

Archibald: "I'm confused ..."

Larry: "I love my lips!" [Scatting]

Narrator: "This has been Silly Songs With Larry. Tune in next time to
hear Larry say ..."

Larry: "Have I ever told you how I feel about my nose?"

Archibald: "Oh, look at the time

Man, I am really sorry you are going through this. Glad to see your sense of humor is intact though.

Dear Aupoo,

Ew! Ow! Ew! Ow! EwOw! Eeewwwoooowwww!

Lad, you have my complete sympathy. Boils are NOT fun and MRSA is just horrendous. Have you been given a prescription-strength antibacterial body wash to use? When I was having boil troubles (before I was poz) I was given a body wash and told to use it in a bath and to soak in it for at least ten minutes every day. I was also told to use any towels - including face cloths - only once before washing them and to wash them in very hot water. A pain in the whatsis, but if it helps...

Here's hoping you get this cleared up soon and without having to resort to surgery. I'm sending you a virtual hug - because like Nadine, I'm gonna take a miss on close contact with ya buddy! ;)  :-* ((((((Benj))))))

Thank you all so much for the well-wishes!

GSO, if I ever lose my sense of humor about infections... be they viral ones of the immune system nature or bacterial ones of the face kind... then I'll be in a very sorry state indeed.  It's how I cope, and it keeps me from feeling too sorry for myself.  It's supposed to help the immune system or something.   :D

And Ann, I have not gotten an antibacterial body wash, but I will tell you what my brilliant-ass self did.  Since I already have freakishly touchy skin, I can only really use all-natural body washes that I get at the expensive natural market.  So, I got an unscented bottle of body wash and then dumped about half a bottle of essential tea tree oil in it.  I have to shake it up every time that I use it... but tea tree oil is quite active against MRSA, and I like the smell.

I'm gonna go watch TV now.  Because I can't show my face in public.

That's brilliant, thanks for sharing. It gave me an expanded idea which was to maybe mix a teaspoon or less into some unscented skin lotion? But then I was thinking the area in question is so close to your nose and face, the scent would be too intense? I dunno, just thinking out loud sweety. MRSA is the last thing we need  :-[

Has your doc actually taken a swab of the pus for testing to confirm its MRSA and not just staph?  That would confirm and if its MRSA the test would tell you what antibiotics its susceptible to.

Some may recall I had two bouts of scalp MRSA earlier this year.  My swab showed it was resistant to everything but tetracyclin (thank goodness), clindamycin and vancomycin.  My doc said clindamycin is brutal on the stomach, and I'm not crazy about getting an IV antibiotic so I pray it doesn't become resistant to tetracyclin.  Thanks to all those folks out there who don't finish a course of antibiotics for creating these superbugs >:(

Hear hear!

One time, I was really drunk... surprise!  And I wouldn't stop screaming about how if they put poz people in jail for having unprotected sex, they should put neggies in jail for not finishing antibiotics and creating super-duper bugs... that kill faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more people than HIV.
