Title: Very worried and confused
Post by: dudakkremi on June 22, 2022, 12:32:36 pm
Hello, I need some help regarding a question I had about HIV testing. About 8 months ago I had a risk, unprotected vaginal sex. I tested after 7 months with a standard 4th generation test, thankfully negative. However I am worried I might have gotten a false test because I was on doxycycline 200mg a day when I tested. When I tried to google if it would affect my test I came across this document regarding the test I took and it had doxycycline listed as one of the potentially interfering drugs. Whatís more alarming is the document says the dosage that was tested as part of the experiment was ONLY 50 MG where I was on a much higher dosage of 200! I am beyond worried now. I know the document says 50mg does not affect the test but surely 200 would right?

please check page 9 and 10 as it says ď The spiked samples were evaluated at a concentration "x" times the maximum daily dosage.Ē As you can see their maximum daily dosage was 50mg and I had taken 200mg.

The rest of the drugs include ibuprofen and paracetamol too and Iím sure i took paracetamol as well before the test! :(

I know that nothing affects antibodies once made but in this particular case I am worried about the test itself being wrong because of the interference from the medication.

I just love the package insert questions. They tend to be filled with CYA (Cover your ass) content or stuff without causation or clear context, causing stress over nothing.

The internet is small, and your question has already been answered on the other forum. I'm unsure what you want me to add. The list of drugs is the standard common drug testing panel to show they don't interfere with HIV testing. It's just housekeeping, and we already know the outcome.

The dosage of 200 mg P.D of antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection isn't impact a virus or antibody production/testing. They tried 10 x 50 mg per liter, so 500mg per liter. It's not an issue, but even if they had not tested this specific antibiotic, the answer would be the same.

Here's what you need to know to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; the only way to know is by testing.

Kind regards

Ahh sorry Iím just so stressed with this damn worry. I donít understand what you mean by 10x50 because it just says they tested 50mg or doxycycline and not more than 50mg. And also 200mg of Acetaminophen which is paracetamol while I took 1000mg a couple of hours before the test because I had a headache stressing about the test.
If they only tested 200mg impact of paracetamol on the test arenít we all really f*cked? Nobodyís test would be reliable.. I just donít understand what to do now, why donít labs ask if us to just fast before the test then.

I just told you it was at least tested at 500 mg per liter, see they tested by using 10 times the dosage (concentration) listed in the table as an example, so 10 x 50 mg =500 mg per liter.

However, even if they had not tested this specific antibiotic it would not change the answer. It doesn't interfere with the antibody production or testing, the same goes for the paracetamol.

I just donít understand what to do now

Move on with your life, you did not acquire HIV from the concerned encounter. Use a condom for any intercourse and if you are sexually active test for HIV & STIs yearly.

Are you suggesting the ďxĒ stands for 10? Ahh I donít know what to think. Iím at my wits end here.
I was getting strange symptoms as well and that just made me more anxious. I could go test again but my anxiety will continue to find ways of doubting my test. Iím looking at some other questions on here and apparently vitamins also can affect the tests now. Canít win here can I :(

X is multiplication in math.

10 x 50 = 500

10 multiplied by 50 is 500.

Anyhow, your questions have fully been answered already both here and on another forum.

There is no issue, the drugs you took don't interfere with the results outside of the window period.  Other people's questions aren't facts or applicable to you so stop it!

The drama you are expecting is fully self created and unnecessary.

Let's keep it simple, you didn't aquire HIV from the concerned incident and the results you already have are conclusive. End of story.
