How many yiddish words can you spell?
« on: May 31, 2013, 12:17:56 pm »
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/31/nyregion/queens-boy-13-wins-scripps-spelling-bee-with-knaidel.html

Arvind V. Mahankali, 13 year old from Queens, won the Spelling Bee and 30K for spelling "knaidel".

A few thoughts. Wow, first, bravo to him for that one, and all the others he had to spell to get there.

Second, double bravo!

I guess I was surprised Scripps puts Yiddish words into the Bee.

In my classes with french (and a few german) speakers, we use lots of American pop culture - TV, music, movies, comic books, you name it.

Every year, there are probably about 10 Yiddish words they learn, when they come up, such as glitch, Mazel Tov, mentsh, oy vey, shmaltz, shmooze, schmuck, shtick, tchatchke.  (American English being what it is and American "show biz" having its culture and affection for the Yiddish language. You'd be surprised how often you hear the Yiddish, if you thought about it, or if you didn't speak English!)

Knaidel though, wow that's a stretch.  Mazel Tov!

Congrats to the young man.  A few Yiddish mavens, however, take exception to his spelling of the winning word as it breaks with traditional spelling which is kneydl:

Supposed to be not the first time Scripps have controversy over spelling of Yiddish and other arcane vocabulary.
I didn't know there was standard spellings for a lot of Yiddish words...

Thanks bubbala!
I didn't know dreck is a Yiddish word.
I haven't heard "faygala" in a long time but I remember people used it often in the 70's.

Good posts with insightful looks into Yiddish parlance and how it mingles with other "tongues".  Very interesting and definitely not ............

One of the most treasured gifts I ever gave to a beloved friend was Leo Rosten's THE JOYS OF YIDDISH. ...For which she said "ein glick on mein keppelah."
