Title: Firefox anyone?
Post by: wolfter on October 30, 2012, 05:32:10 pm
I've decided to start using firefox and have a question about zooming.  I haven't figured out how to zoom it in like I can in IE.  The control key and mouse wheel just makes it distorted.

I constantly have problems with IE and am hoping this fixes that issue but there's no way I can read it.  IE allows me to zoom to 400%.

Thanks all my techy friends as I don't feel like "Googling" it.

I think you can zoom in-out with ctrl+ mouse wheel

On a Mac all you have to do in ANY program is hit command-and-"+" to increase font size. Doesn't Microslop do things like that?

Greg...

Holding down the control button, while rotating the center mouse button, will zoom in and out.

If your menu bar is visible, select view> zoom>, and then zoom in or zoom out.
You can also zoom only the text, or reset back to default,

By default, the menu bar is not visible. To show it, get your cursor just above the address bar, click on the right mouse button, and place a check mark in "Menu Bar"

The latest version of Firefox is 16.0.2   To check you version, click help ( on the menu bar, and then "About Firefox".  depending on update settings, it should update automatically to the latest version.  I update mine manually.

One of the things I like about Firefox, is it's very customizable.( is that a word  :) )It's also faster than Internet Explorer.

I prefer Chrome.

I tried the control + adjusting the mouse wheel but its zoom makes it all goofy looking.  Perhaps I can't zoom as much as I can in IE.  I have Google Chrome and think I'll check out the zoom feature there.  IE is just causing too many issues lately and I'm tired of it.

Wish I didn't have to zoom in that much, but it is what it is.

Thanks all.

Not to hijack your thread, but what do android users here use?  I finally updated my android phone, after it telling me repeatedly to do so.  I don't like the Explorer update.  Previously, to toggle between browser pages, you use to hit that button at the bottom of the phone that looks like the HRC equality logo.  It would then bring up all the windows you have open and you could scroll through all windows or open a new one.

Now, you have to scroll all the way back to the top of the page to get the icon to appear.  So, if you're reading something on one browser page and want to go to Google to fact check something, you have to leave the spot on the page your reading and scroll back to the top, to get the browser pages icon to appear.  So, I was going to download firefox and chrome to see if they are better for mobile.  Sometimes it seems the developers don't actually use the software.  Or, there are easy shortcuts that I don't know.

I use Chrome on android. If you use Chrome on your computer then all of your bookmarks will show up on your android. It's all integrated because "duh" it's all google.

If your referencing tabbed browsing then yes, Chrome on android does that.

Wow, I don't know why I had Chrome downloaded as I've never used it.  I've been playing around on it and I like it much better than the other 2.  You can actually zoom as much as you want without it distorting it.   Kinda nice for us impaired folk.

PS, what does the mark as unread tab indicate?  I've never noticed it before.

The reason I prefer Chrome is that when you do tabbed browsing, each tab is handled as a separate application so if a web site causes a crash, it doesn't crash the entire browser. Maybe other browsers do this now, or maybe it's only the Mac version... dunno. But when Chrome first came out it was the only one that did this so that's why I've always used it. It's also good at instantly restoring browsing sessions if you erroneously quit the browser. I've used it for four years now.

I'll try to stump you with this one.  I use yahoo tool bar a lot and have all my favorite sites there so I can log in anywhere and have access to them.  Is there a way to transfer them or pin yahoo tool bar to google chrome?

I don't use yahoo so why the fuck would I know? :P But if you google "yahoo toolbar chrome" maybe you can figure it out on your own.

There's probably a way to export the bookmarks from yahoo tool bar, then import them into Chrome.

Now that I'm able to zoom easily, I can actually google more often.  I discovered you can't pin yahoo favorites to Google Chrome.  I'll have to go to each of those websites through IE and save as a favorite through IE then import them all.  It'll take a while, but hey, I'm laid up for at least another month.

Modified to ask without googling, is there a way to permanently zoom to 400% without having to do it on each page?

Modified again:  I found that feature thanks to google.  Lordy, gonna love researching and reading stuff again.

How do you watch porn on your computer -- isn't that hard to zoom?

I pull out my VHS and Beta tapes just like everyone else. :o  Oh, and I really do have Mr. John Holmes in his only gay porn movie.  Since we went to the same high school, I thought it was my duty to support his nasty drug habit that ultimately caused him to become a heathen and partake in the queer lifestyle.

VHS? Beta? Goodness, I haven't even owned a VCR for the past 8 years. Should I send you all of my old VHS tapes? I must have six boxes of them, though most are back in Brooklyn in my old apartment's basement.

Haven't you learned how to do torrent files yet? All of my porn is digital and stored on a 2TB external drive.

I don't even know what a torrent file is and I am tired of studying.  I was up til 5:00 am learning new stuff.  Surprisingly, I have never downloaded any porn.  I get all worried about downloading anything.  One virus in my life is enough. ;D

I really have researched this but can't find the answer.  I keep reading that I have to click on the dang wrench icon in the upper left but I don't have it.  What the freak am I missing.

Umm, maybe a larger monitor? I'd go with a Samsung 27" dedicated monitor if your eyesight isn't that bad. If your eyesight is getting poor, get a nice 42" or larger TV with DVI or HDMI inputs. Then just sit back and be able to view everything without having to resort to magnifying your browser window.

Heck if you have a TV manufactured in the last few years, just get a nice HDMI cable and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. Prop yourself in a recliner, put the keyboard on a lap desk and have at it. You can switch inputs from your TV remote if you have cable,  Roku or AppleTV already hooked to your TV, to your computer's video signal without having to swap cables.

And if you need a cable cheap, monoprice has anything you need.

intaglio, that's a good suggestion. Wolfie probably should explore the large flat-screen TV as monitor option. He could probably integrate an Apple TV with an iPad and use it as a controller. That's what I want to do eventually.

That actually is a good idea.  My flat screen tv that I bought for my bedroom came with the cable and since I seldom watch it, I'll incorporate it into my new computer center.

Now I'm off to the big city to buy a replacement hard drive for my laptop.  2 years old and it already is failing.

Columbus or bustling Parkersburg, WV? We used to go visit family friends in Belpre.

Glad I called as they were out of the drive I needed and they offered free shipping if I ordered it and had it shipped to my home.

I usually go to Lancaster, OH when I need to shop.  My family all has to go Parkersburg since most of them live in Meigs County, OH and Jackson County, WVA.  Ravenswood WVA just doesn't cut it in the shopping department unless you're look for bib overalls or camo outerwear.  :)  And forget about finding designer shoes......but probably the largest selection of boots you'll ever find.  And other than my cowboy boots, I don't own a pair of those hideous work boots that so many wear as a fashion statement.  Not even sure what kinda statement they're making.

Sorry to disappoint you -- they're as plain as standard non-designer combat boots (which is why I like them) except when you touch them the leather is 500% nicer, especially the inside. I've had them over a decade and just had them resoled.
