Atripla rash
« on: November 28, 2007, 01:45:21 pm »
Hmmm.... I'm not sure if I have the Atripla rash or what the Doc thinks:  a fungal skin infection.   My forehead, scalp, and parts of my face have red splotches that seem to burn or itch - kind of like a sunburn.   He's prescribed Ketaconazole cream.   I've been on Atripla for just over 2 months without any major issues, so he thinks it's not related, but I'm not sure.

Anyone else have a similar reaction 2-3 months into Atripla ?  ???

Bob, I experienced something like that after about a month and a half on Atripla.  In my case, it was an itchy red spot on my neck -- like a sunburn.  I read a few articles about IRIS (Immune Reconstitution Inflamation Syndrome), and most of the articles indicated that IRIS seems to strike between 3 and 20 weeks after starting HAART treatment.  You and I are both still in that range, I suppose.   With IRIS, we can expect old fungal infections to flare up from time to time.  And that seems to be what your doctor is diagnosing.  Good luck with it!

Bob,

You would normally expect Atripla rash (or efavirenz rash) to show up in the first few weeks of treatment.

Hard to tell without seeing it, but the fungal thing sounds perfectly plausible .. or it could just be plain old boring immune reconstitution acne.

If you are on Bactrim (or Septrin), then it could also be sensitivity to light and you may find that slapping some sunscreen on will help.

Thanks guys.   I've been using the ketaconazole cream, but so far have only slight improvement.    The red splotches on my face seem to be lighter in color, but still burn and itch.    I've  got refills for the next 3 months, so guess I will just have to wait and see what happens til I see the Doc again in February.   I've got a darn wart that's not going away despite Aldara cream and my CD4 gave up all it's gain since I started Atripla (tho VL stayed undetectable).   I know I'll be anxious to see what happens with the next set of labs  :-\
