This Cardinal seems to be a mixed bag in regards to those who hope for a progressive Vatican.

He wants the church involved in reforming global finance to help address wealth distribution.  But seems too timid to modernise the Church about sex, contraception, disease prevention, etc.   (Well, we could also hope that once he's in power, he could change his tune....)

The Vatican and "abstinence" seem to be chiseled-in-stone BFFs as much as the GOP and "trickle down economics".

And at the end of the day, does global capitalism need to listen to the advice of the Catholic Pope? Doubtful.  But a Pope could reform his own Church's murderously antiquated doctrine....

Gasp!  Clutch the vestments!

Actually Ms. P. you are on point. A  black, latin or even asian pope are possibilities given the catholic faith representation in culturally diverse majority population countries:

I wonder if there will be a new fashion line for the dalmatic, chasuble, cope and other accessories?

Perhaps it's time to just do away with the position.  Or, elect a pope, who runs around in regular clothes, and gets his hands dirty from actual dirt--building homes for the poor, walking dirt roads to visit the ill, instead of dirt from covering up sex abuse.  I didn't realize every sex abuse case came to him, in his prior position.

And, I just don't think the baby Jebus would be okay with this:

Didn't Jesus say to give away all your possessions to those in need?  Turn the Vatican into a Five-Star hotel, and give the profits to charities.

Online chatterers ask whether he's that sick, or if the sacking of Cardinal Mahony wasn't sufficient bloodletting. This Pope has a LOT of crime on his conscience.  Its not like the good ol days of Pius XII's failings during the Holocaust. Everybody can know everything now.

Maybe they will give the job to his brother Eggs .

Heh... you mean my youngest cat? He was born two years ago on Easter Sunday and so was duly "christened" Eggs Benedict. Hey, you can't name a tom "bunny". He usually gets called by his nickname, Monster. He was the evillest kitten I've even known, so maybe he would be a good choice for poop Poop POPE darnit! Oh, and he's been known to molest his uncle Fred, so there's that in his favour as well.

Ok, joking aside, I smell a Rat(zinger). This guy has been one of the most egotistical popes in recent history (witness his going for the gold where his wardrobe was concerned) and I can't really see him stepping down voluntarily. I think he was pushed, for whatever reason. Either that or he knows about some huge scandal that's going to break in coming months and he wanted to be well clear. I don't believe a word of this "too sick" crap. Too butt-ugly, maybe.

Didn't Jesus say to give away all your possessions to those in need?  Turn the Vatican into a Five-Star hotel, and give the profits to charities.

That could work for all those obscene shopping mall inspired mega churches that are all the rage in the US these days too. Better yet, turn them into homeless shelters with on-site medical facilities. I think Baby Jebus would approve of that, don't you?

As a parting gift he could boot Cardinal Sodano (dean of College of Cardinals), who ranks right up there with Cardinal Mahoney in covering up the sex scandals.  I agree with Ann.  Something tells me there are some major issues that are going to come to light and Bendict wants to be as far from the papacy as he can get.

This was my immediate thought when the news first broke. Then when I heard that a Pope hasn't resigned since 1450...well something is amiss in the Vatican. He statement said he is too old, but heck as Popes go Papa Benny is like a spry teenager. Near the end of John Paul's reign they were holding his head up during his speeches, and propping him up with a stick in the Pope-Mobile.

Agreed!  There is a mega church here that is building very large satellite churches around town.  The main campus is huge.  The wedding chapel alone is bigger than many normal churches.  And, they own apartments for church goers to rent.  They ran commercials in support of a ban on marriage equality back in 2004.

Oh, I was hearing that the pope cannot vote on his successor, because he is over the age of 80.  He is too senile to vote on a pope, but can be the pope.  Hmmm.

Dear Joseph Ratzinger, please go back to the bloody ultra-catholic Bavaria where you came from :) They will love you there. Not like here in the atheistic Prussia.

Anyway, the catholic church has trillions of dollars, alone some billions of estate in New York City. They could do more for the poor, p.e. in Africa; the Vatican has more power than the whole U.S.A.
I hope the new Pontifex Maximus has other views on AIDS and condoms than Benedict XVI.:)
I admit that he is really intellectual and has written some interesting books, but some of his opinions are from the middle ages.

Does the Pope get to keep his threads or does he have to head out in flip flops and such and leave all his cast offs for his successor. Oh the work for tailors in the Vatican, taking it in here and letting it out there.

And the jewelry. Will they search Bentdick when he leaves to make sure none of the rings and things have somehow ended up in his purse?

Joan Rivers should do a Papal red carpet event for the election...

I understand that nothing material is the Pope's property, it's all the church's. So no, I don't think he gets to keep anything.
They say he will move into a cloister on site, and stay in seclusion for the rest of his life.
Curious, I tried yesterday to find an estimate of the church's wealth. And I am a pretty good searcher, came up with nothing.  The vatican bank IOR has been in scandal, these years, and can't keep a President.  The Bank of the Holy Spirit no longer exists :(.  Supposedly in the 60's and 70s' the Vatican was actually cash poor. Who knows....

I like the one that there is some old 12C prophecy about centuries of Popes to come, and after Benedict, the next one will be the last of all time.

Aren't you the last person on this forum to make religious jokes? Or are you just one of those recidivist anti-Catholics that once threw rocks into cathedral windows, or worse rioted and burned them down? There's a long history of such things in Philadelphia bakc in the 1800's.

Then again, you mock me for being Jewish because of my nose.

Where did I read an article today, that explained how this Rat and Jean Paul only nominated socially conservative Cardinals? How all the pope wannabes are homo hating misogynists, and there's not a Rat's chance in hell that the church can confront its present and future challenges on these counts?

Miss Philly will now observe lent by laying prostrate before a gigantic crucifix for the next 40 days and nights.  Tourists will begin to arrive in the aptly named city of brotherly love in droves to bear witness. ;)

La Repubblica said some Vatican officials had been subject to "external influence" from laymen with whom they had links of a "worldly nature".

or this one...

In 2010 a chorister was dismissed for allegedly procuring male prostitutes for a papal gentleman-in-waiting.

Sounds like a Tennessee Williams play.

I'm starting to feel like I am in the largest gay bath house in the world.

This didn't surprise me in the least yesterday when it was all over the news. O'Brien is the same guy who last week was spouting off about the priest marriage ban.

"Britain's most senior Catholic has suggested Catholic priests should be able to marry and have children, saying the demand for celibacy was not of "divine origin".

In one of the most significant breaks with Catholic orthodoxy, Cardinal Keith O'Brien said many priests found it "very difficult to cope" with the celibate life and suggested lifting that ban could soon happen in the wider church."

I guess when he said that many priest found it "very difficult to cope" with being celibate, he was speaking from experience. ::) Like many men, he had a difficult time keeping it in his pants robes.

I did predict there was a scandal brewing in the background, and the recent revelations of the past few days are likely only the tip of a very large iceberg.

Either that or he knows about some huge scandal that's going to break in coming months and he wanted to be well clear.

What a colossal embarrassment and shame. Too bad there's no higher entity that can fire the whole lot and appoint an interim management team to clean up this rotten house. I bet Queen Elizabeth could do it.  That would be historical irony for you.  God should do it.  Or, is this the church God wants?

I just find the media's obsession odd.  Can you imagine any other organization getting this kind of reverence and attention that is so sexist, homophobic, and so mired in scandal?  The child abuse is rampant.  With any other group, the media would chastise them, and certainly wouldn't give them all this attention.

It is funny, but a sad commentary on journalism, when you have Christiane Amanpour discussing the change in footwear.  Really?

I am uncertain of your logic.  We know the Church is thoroughly corrupt in part because the Media has willingly covered church scandal, and anti-church activism, for example on the issue of child abuse.

I am not sure the media revers the Catholic Church.  The media reports on anything it considers a story, or that it thinks the public considers a story.

A lot of coverage does not equal respect and reverence.

However, I will give you this.  The tone is not consistent.  Individual reporters will cross over into reverence.  Not unlike coverage of the Windsors.

My take on sartorial exuberance such as red silk opera opera pumps, etc.

This is my view about men, not women. Its really about gay men, metrosexuals, dandies, Catholic clergy, post-preps, and forever alternative types.

For example, espadrilles. And white bucks.  I  like them on a guy late teens to mid to late twenties.  (White bucks on a 30 something American guy.... no thanks.  Ok for espadrilles on a middle aged Frenchman, but some American queens at a beach resort, um no.)   Bow ties...  (High water pants for suits -- it was the "golden boy" look on Wall Street in the mid-eightes.  Thom Browne just reiterated it, didn't create it...)  Baseball caps...  College Hoodie...  Fred Armisen nails the wardrobe don'ts of 40 something alternatives, in Portlandia.

You gotta put away this stuff until your mid 50's...  Wretched old Cardinals and The Holy Father look great in their exuberance...  Old trolls can and should work any super gay look that tickles them, (they must try to outdress Elton John, Liberace, Jerry Garcia, Dame Edna, Colonel Gaddafi, the Mararishi Mahesh Yogi, Andre Leon Talley, combined) no matter how ridiculous, and its a pity he's ditching his fab red slippers...

In fact maybe its not his choice, maybe they come with the job and lessor mortal souls can't get near them....  You know this one is going to end up in smelly crocs and a burgandy velour track suit.

So I just heard on Tv that the reason the Popes shoes are red, is to symbolize the blood of a martyr? Or something like that.

I wonder what the Mexican loafers he is putting on right now signifies?.

Friends of Dorthy (for the Red shoes)

and Freedom from the church, perhaps

(for the euro loafers)  :D

I read that these loafers were given to Benny while he was in Mexico, by one of his followers.  He said that they fit so well, he was going to wear them when he went into hiding retirement.

Ah Ok. I wasn't sure if it was "a thing"  sanctioned by the church, like the Red shoes.. Good for him, you really cant beat a good pair of Mexican loafers.

So It's official, we are Popeless.

Am I the only one feeling a bit lost and scared?

What happens if a Demons come and invade the Earth during this time who will lead the charge against them.. MissP?

Does everyone get a holiday from Sin now? Should I start drinking and dancing and loading up on tricks?

Meanwhile while the world is falling apart due to no Pope, (Dennis Rodman is chumming it up with Kim Jong Il in N, Korea, etc..) the Cardinals are laughing it up and having tea, not the least bit worried about getting down to Conclave business.  :-\

Scary times my friends, scary times.

Since you ask me, I think your hypocrisy is stunning. You get riled up when anyone makes the slightest comment about your religion, then you turn around and indulge in continual, atrociously bigoted anti-Catholicism.

But hey, you're from Texas where hypocrisy grows on trees. Or rather parched tumbleweed.

I noticed that as well! The assistant seemed a bit happy...maybe because now he can have Benny all to himself. and yes, the assistant is quite handsome.

Ps- lmao @ Pope on a Rope. I actually think we have that in our Walmarts down here. SA is a big Catholic town, you cant swing a dead cat without hitting a Catholic down here. And they are all up in a tizzy over this.

So many have said Cardinals from the U.S. would likely not be considered, because they are from a super power.  However, it now seems both Cardinals Dolan and O'malley are now rising stars.  Apparently, they've impressed Italians with their charisma.  Dolan does seem very charismatic.  But, I've been reading how he is accused of paying off pedophile priests to go away.  If true, it would seem like status quo, and he wouldn't be the right person to clean up the problems.

And you really don't want her to give you a Glasgow kiss, even though she'd probably have to borrow a step-stool to accomplish such a feat. ;D

St Francis was a protector of animals, and you know what they say about a man who loves animals.

Out with the old, in with the same old;

http://www.businessinsider.com/pope-francis-comments-on-gay-marriage-and-gay-adoption-2013-3

Pope Francis Called Gay Adoption A Form Of Discrimination Against Children

REUTERS
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been elected the new pope and will now be known as Pope Francis.

Bergoglio, 76, was the "runner-up" last time the College of Cardinals elected a new pope because he "appealed to conservatives," according to John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter.

Here's more from Allen:

Bergoglio is seen an unwaveringly orthodox on matters of sexual morality, staunchly opposing abortion, same-sex marriage, and contraception. In 2010 he asserted that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children.

In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires explaining his position, Bergoglio wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."

Furthermore, he said the bill called into question "the identity, and the survival of the family: father, mother, and children" and said the country needed "the special assistance of the Holy Spirit, to place the light of truth in the middle of the darkness of error, to defend us against the enchantment of so many sophistries with which they seek to justify this bill."

Nevertheless, Allen notes that in 2001 Bergoglio "visited a hospice to kiss and wash the feet of 12 AIDS patients."

Part of the draw of Bergoglio was his personal simplicity because he was a Prince of the Church "who chose to live in a simple apartment rather than the archbishop's palace, who gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of taking the bus to work, and who cooked his own meals," according to Allen.

I like how Francis doesn't own a car and insists on taking the subway and bus in Buenos Aires, and shuns the official residence and instead took a small apartment. Sounds like me.

Did you side with the junta while people were disappearing in Argentina? Do you have to have a fascist background to be a Pope these days? Of course the pundits are peeing themselves because he touched a diseased pinkie.

Indeed I did! I even decorated my apartment with their dried foreskin remnants. Vile, godless communists, all of them.

Now that you mention all of this, maybe I am actually the Pope and am in some sort of fourth dimension vortex at the moment.

I reckon we're all fortunate that they didn't have to campaign for the position like our great political leaders do.  That would have been way too much to deal with.

At dinner tonight, we had a conversation about how much power the pope really has.

If a pope decided to sell off everything (especially the Vatican), give all the money to the poor, and scale down the institution to a small church, would he have the authority to do it?  He is God's representative on Earth, after all.  If God told him to do it, who could question it?  Well, who could stop it?

Or, would the hierarchy step in, and rule him coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs, and have him overruled?  Just something we thunk about.  Does the pope not have control over their assets, money and property?  Does his authority basically stop at setting church doctrine?

I know it seems silly, but not totally out of the realm of possibility to have a pope go rogue.
