Risk of getting HIV from giving oral
« on: December 17, 2016, 09:58:57 am »
Hi all

Firstly I would like to apologise. I know this has been asked alot of times but I couldn't help myself but needing someone to talk to.

Last week (9 Dec) I performed oral sex on another man I know from grindr with unknown HIV status. I know oral sex by itself has low risk but I later found out the next day that I may have a small wound on the inner cheek near the lower left 3rd molar. It's not a big wound and there weren't any bleeding from what I can remember.
Other than that, the guy did not ejaculate in my mouth.

So my questions are:
1. What are my chances of getting HIV from just this 1 incident? Have you guys ever know anyone who tested positive just from giving orals?

2. 1 week later (16 Dec), I starting to feel abit of muscle ache all around. Also seems to have some pain on the location of the genital lymph node area when palpated. No fever yet. Is it common for early HIV symptoms surface within 1 week?

3. Is there any way to know if you are infected ASAP? I know ORAQUICK requires atleast 3 months to be conclusive while the antigen test requires atleast 1 month but the fear and anxiety is hard to bear. Where I come from, HAART ain't even close to cheap and no insurance here covers HIV. Not to mention the loneliness from the social stigma.

P.S. I did later contacted the guy to ask if I can see him again to run a ORAQUICK test on him only to have him flipped out on me then say he regretted meeting me in the first place. We were on good terms before that. I guess I must have offended him by demanding for too much.....

Hi

We don't discuss symptoms and nothing you mentioned was HIV specific.

1- No

2 & 3: Well than you know that the virus is very fragile, and your mouth has dozens of protein and enzymes that damage the virus and render it unable to infect.

If this is your only concern than there is no need to run out and test. No need to do so  every time you give a blow job in the future either, just get tested the next time you are due for a regular checkup and fully expect a negative result.

Asking the guy to test was silly, we presume here he was positive but if he tested negative it means nothing as he could still be positive and if he tested positive he could be on treatment and nothing you did stood out as an urgent concern to start with.

Stop freaking out, no drama required. Get tested the next time you are due for a regular checkup and fully expect a negative result.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

Hi

Can see you lurking so let me beat you to it.

Not much more I can do for you here, We are only providing risk assessments and in short if you don't like it by all means go test, we recommend everyone does at least yearly anyway.

However stop freaking out, no drama required. You had no real world risk, Get tested the next time you are due for a regular checkup and if what you posted is all true I would fully expect a negative result.

Thanks for your reply.

Other than giving oral with some wound in my mouth, there's also deep kissing which has less risk and oral itself. Nothing more.

Ok. I will wait and get tested again in 3 months time.

You're welcome.

Again running out to test over this incident itself is not needed, just test as normal when next due, however if it gives you peace of mind to move on than test.

Kissing is not a risk BTW.
