Cunnilingus with canker sore?
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:33:06 am »
Hi,

Thanks for any assistance that I get regarding my question.  It is good to know that there are forums on the internet that can assist with anxiety and to answer some simple questions.

There seems to be some differences on the internet and with what the CDC states regarding oral sex transmission therefore I wanted to get as much information as possible before I make my decision if PEP is needed in my scenario.

I gave unprotected cunnilingus to a female of unknown HIV status (she told me she never had any STD).  I had a Canker Sore (Alpthous ulcer) inside my mouth at the time we had this encounter.  There were no visible sores and no blood present that I could see (used my fingers as well).  Normally I would not be concerned about HIV transmission (assuming she had it) through oral sex but the Canker Sore is the issue that is giving me some anxiety.

Are there any documented cases about getting HIV because of an open sore in the mouth?  I am still within the PEP time frame and I have the funds to get it if I choose but is it worth it (the side effects) or am I being a little too anxious.  I read the welcome screen and it states of 2 documented cases female-female / female-male with cunnilingus, are those from the CDC?

Anyhow, please let me know your thoughts and opinions about this and if I should go to a clinic to get the PEP?

Thanks

Hi Cnsa . I have read your question carefully and understand your fears based on the information you gathered . Most of the cases , if not all have been discredited after the facts bore out other risk factors and exposures .

The oral sex you described isn't a risk for HIV . Your saliva contains dozens of enzymes that damage and render HIV unable to infect . There have been no fewer than three separate serodiscordant couples studies (where one person is HIV positive, the other negative.) These couples were tracked for three. five and ten years. The couples used condoms for penetrative vaginal and anal sex, but NO BARRIER at all for oral sex. Any kind of oral sex.

These studies yielded NO infections.

You do not need to test over this specific incident and you certainly do not need PEP .

Jeff,

Thank you for your timely response, I am glad that with so many years of documented HIV infections there have been no 100% confirmed cases of oral transmissions.  My only concern was the canker sore and I was willing to take the PEP in order to prevent a life time of treatment even if there was a very small risk. (assuming the female even has HIV)

In that case I will just do my annual STD panel test and continue with my life practicing safe intercourse like I have been.

Thanks.
