Bush to Tout AIDS Program

Weekend Edition Saturday, February 16, 2008 · President Bush visits Africa for six days and will highlight one of the initiatives of which he's most proud — his administration's global AIDS initiative. President Bush is traveling to Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and Liberia.

The president is traveling to Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and Liberia.

Laurie Garrett, senior fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations says that thanks in part to the AIDS initiative, 30 percent of those with AIDS in poor countries are getting treatment, up from 1 to 2 percent before the intiative started 8 years ago.

Until US AIDS funding to the hot countries is uncoupled from the abstinence model, then believe in it not a bit.

That's one of my initial thoughts, but I am more interested in the report that 30% of patients in poor African countries are receiving treatments..

Here's another one.

Bush Signs Aid Deal for Tanzania Infrastructure

Weekend Edition Sunday, February 17, 2008 · President Bush signed an aid deal Sunday in Tanzania to provide nearly $700 million to build roads and infrastructure there. Tanzania has already received millions from the U.S. to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS and malaria. At a joint press conference, Tanzania President President Jakaya Kikwete spoke about Bush's legacy.

So what's he up to?

So what's he up to?

What's he up to? Well here's your problem:

Bush's legacy.

Dubya is a lame duck president, who's legacy is in tatters. It's all a shambles really. He's looking to leave office with some semblance of a reputation.

True enough Matty..

Just still curious to know if anyone has any info/views on whether those programs are actually helping more in Africa getting treatments.

Though he touting to AIDS funding, he has cut domestic AIDS funding! I guess we have to move to Africa or some other third world country before those of us living here in the US will see the funding - abstinence or not!

While I do applaud increasing money for AIDS funding in Africa, this should not be seen as anything but "legacy enhancement" due to all of his other failures.  What else does he have left?  He's been completely negligent about domestic AIDS programs so what's THAT at heart mean?  It means simply that he's pandering to his far-right evangelical base, who are johnny-come-latelys to their AIDS compassion.  Kay Warren comes to mind...

But let's help the poor foreigners, and not the local fags and drug addicts -- fo' sure!

Exactly. Why is it that more help is going overseas, then to our own country? I don't like that...and I used to live in Africa.

We have no idea idea what Bush is up to.  We usually only hear bad things about W. Sure havent heard much about Iraq since the military and political successes there in past year. Its really sad the media only reports in the "if it bleeds it leads" mode and the left fought US victory in the war for political gain, and lost.

While most here hate W, if they looked at history they would discover he is much closer to the Dems than Reps. He spends like a drunken democrat, he is off giving away our money to anyone who has their hand out,no matter how much they hate us. You cant buy friendship, contrary to what most liberals like W believe. He is constantly trying to deals with the Dems even though they shit on him at every turn. Maybe there is a reason for this madness, but I have no idea what it is.

If there is one person in the US who is going without HIV meds,we shouldnt be giving away our confiscated tax dollars to foreign countries for the HIV meds or treatment.  Even then we should demand something in return.

Reminds me of how the republican candidates act like Regan was the 2nd coming of Christ.  He was one of the worst presidents in history, but for some reason, people get all sentimental when speaking of him.  This is how Bush wants to be remembered years from now I'm sure.
