Restoring CD4s to "Normal"
« on: January 08, 2009, 05:05:21 pm »
I've blogged about another study showing a potential benefit to starting treatment at higher than 350 CD4s:

Neat information.  Thanks for sharing the data.  I forwarded on to my primary care physician and to the doctor who is running the study I'm in.  Both should find the data useful and interesting.
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.

My Doctor started me on meds in June when my CD4 was 511. The PharmD and nurses were surprised.
He felt since I was educated and motivated, why should I wait. 6 months later my CD4 is 723, with an undetectable viral load. Feel great and expect to stay healthy for a long time.

I'm sure its a good idea and the real challenge is -- are countries ready to foot the bill?
Will also go a way to normalising HIV+ as a chronic disease and will also perhaps cut down a bit on transmission.

Hi all !

I wish I did that- started my meds. earlier . Find it very hard to get back my CD4 to at least 350 .
Through the last 4 years VL undetectable cd4 100 to the highest I had was 211. Now 159 (2 months ago)
I think that's why I feel so tired all the time, but I've posted on that topic earlier . seeing my doc. on 26th
January will get back on it. thanks for that topic , I'm sure people will find it helpful.
 every blessing ;)

Perhaps my situation is a bit different as I have hiv and hbv co-infection but my MD and I decided to start meds (Atripla) early for this reason and because my hbv vl was pretty high.  Fortunately Atripla treats both viruses.  My CD4 went from 370 in May to 807 in December.  HIV vl dropped from 83,000 to undetectable.  Hbv vl went from 800,000 to 240.

I posted this under the blog, but pasted a copy here as well.

I spoke with my doctor about this today after he showed me an article in a medical journal about this very subject.
I started early, when my counts were in the mid 400s. I am very glad I did.
My doctor is now considering approaching those of his patients who are between the 350 and 500 CD4 levels to discuss beginning treatment.
I have seen too many people not bounce back from low CD4 levels even though their viral loads are undetectable.
If I had to choose, I would again choose to begin meds as soon as my CD4s dropped below 500.
This isn't about "Big Pharma," its about continuing to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

Edited to add: In March I will have been on meds for 13 years. Don't regret it at all.

HUGS,

Mark
