Curious about colleges and school related thingies.
« on: December 02, 2006, 03:58:19 pm »
After some serious debate, internal fighting, aruging with my parents and things like that I've officially decided that a) if I decide on a career in the art field I might kill someone b) I do not have the emotional capabilities to handle being a vet and c) I like to write.

I had a discussion with my friend B. She constantly gives copies of her stories to edit and pays me in small gifts for my work ("B! I want a sodddaaa.") and is always amazed at how well I am able to edit it for her. Beyond just editing mistakes in grammar and spelling and punctuation and fun (boring) things like that, I usually write notes on how to improve sentence structure and maybe better word choices and story ideas and things like that. But I never, you know, take away from her story, just try to build it up so it's better.

I enjoy this!

I also enjoy writing on my own though I find it a lot more difficult because it always seems impossible to get out everything I need to get out and even though I try to have a large vocabulary I can't usually find the words I'm looking for. Which is blah (see?!).

Nonetheless, I really want to pursue some kind of career in English or writing. I'm not sure exactly what yet but I think looking into colleges that have good programs for these kinds of things would be a good start?

Anyone have suggestions?

I would start by taking a creative writing class at a local college.  They are fun!  I did that.  Unfortunately,
I ended up in finance which Isn't my first choice, but it pays the bills and my company will on pay for business related
courses. (sigh).

Still wondering what Im going to be when I grow up!

but I promise...I will never grow up!

I'd start looking/applying at universities or liberal arts colleges far away from home.  Sometimes it's good to live far away from the nest and friends.  Study English or maybe even Journalism.  You can always switch, if you don't like it.

Art and writing?  Have you considered game design?  Check out UAT.edu I just transfered there for an online network security program and love it.
Be prepared though, the geek factor is really really high there.

I studied technical writing and editing. My plan was to make a decent living doing that while I wrote my great sci-fi series. I changed course mid stream but it was still a good plan.
