An Iowa State University professor resigned after admitting he falsely claimed rabbit blood could be turned into a vaccine for the AIDS virus.
Dr. Dong-Pyou Han spiked a clinical test sample with healthy human blood to make it appear that the rabbit serum produced disease-fighting antibodies, officials said.
The bogus findings helped Han’s team obtain $19 million in research grants from the National Institutes of Health, said James Bradac, who oversees the institutes’ AIDS research.
The remarkable findings were reported in scientific journals but raised suspicions when other researchers could not duplicate Han’s results.
The NIH uncovered the scam when it checked the rabbit serum at a lab and found the human antibodies.
Han resigned from his university post as an assistant professor of biomedical studies in October. His case came to light this week when it was reported in the Federal Register.
Han agreed last month not to seek government contracts for three years, the register said.

Defrauding a government agency for $19M? Nope, just sounds like an amateur. Really serious fraudsters get away with much more. The guy should have studied finance in college, not medicine. ;D

In Nature and Science magazines there have been editorials recently that speak of these numerous crimes. The editorial boards advocate for more police/prosecutor involvement rather than these BS slaps on the wrists. This man, and others like him, should go to prison for a very long time.

Why? Sure, he faked one result and that's wrong. But it's not like he put this 19Mil in his own pocket. It was used by his lab to conduct research (Let's assume the rest of his lab are not fraudsters). When researcher write grant proposals they often exaggerate the implications of their research to make it sound more important and this increase their chances. The only difference here was that that professor actually faked one result to further increase the chances of his lab to get that grant.
From the article it's not even clear if that faked result even was the deciding factor. They might have gotten the money anyway.
So, it was right that he resigned. But go to prison for a long time?
Aren't there already enough people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_the_United_States) sitting in prison? My impression is it doesn't seem to solve any problems.

He sidelined other research labs into wasting resources and time trying to reproduce his false results.
Heaven forbid any of his falsified results actually led to human trials (I checked as many of the affected grants as possible on the RePORTER system of the NIH - http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-14-037.html).
You may think a 3 year ban from research seems light. It's actually fatal for his research career. The many years working for a PhD and establishing himself has been effectively trashed. He will always have to report this fraud in any future research work and publications.
Thank goodness, he isn't an actual physician.

Yup. He constructed his own prison. So much for 'advanced' degrees when combined with Cro-Magnon ethics.

I teach undergrads and every year we have to deal with the plagiarists.They come in different stripes and some can be turned around to the road of intellectual integrity and fair play. But every year you will get one of each of these: 1) He knows cheating is wrong, acknowledges that he cheated, and says his hosanna, but he's going to cheat again, guaranteed, just get better at not being caught. 2) He denies he cheated and looks right through you when denying it - amoral and soulless and thankfully usually rather dumb.

I have mixed feelings about the indictment - as much as I think some kind of punishment is warranted I don't think prison will serve him or society.

Where I generally agree prison will not serve him or society I think that he should be locked away and subject to the same laws until there is justice applied equally... white collar crime should face the same horrors society visits upon the less fortunate when you get into trouble . Affluefluenza should not be a defense .

Given that our discussion is all in theory...I would rather see justice applied fairly across all demographics, rather than the horrors of justice across all demographics. With regard to this case - I get the sense that there are some powerful people that want this guys head - so you may get your wish.

Anyone reading this who paid taxes in the US was ripped off by this f**ker who can 't even put together enough language skills to make an adequate statement. There was a grant writer and team of folks who made this guy and his proposal credible enough to fund. I hope they are puking. It is fair, in my opinion, that he get the maximum possible. We 'll never see any money back, but he 'll not be able to do it again.
And perhaps the NIH will do a better job of vetting and auditing. This should not have happened on multiple levels.

As I said, another narcissist. Despicable dude - but standard for this type of person.
I really wish "they" would also go after more white collar thieves who don't hesitate to rob the public.
