Anxiety on Atripla
« on: January 08, 2013, 04:20:56 pm »
I've been on Atripla a little over a month now.  I'm waiting on labs to get back, but I assume all is well on it.  All of the adverse side effects from the first couple weeks have been resolved since I last posted on here.  One thing I'm noticing, though, is that my anxiety levels seem to be through the roof.  I feel like I've become overly worried and obsessive about things that I normally wouldn't (though it is like me to stress).
Has anybody else experienced increased anxiety on atripla?

Also, please don't tell me to switch my regimen because you think it's inferior.

Anxiety is a common side effect of Sustiva, one of the components in Atripla. There's plenty of information about this on these forums so just do a quick search and you should find quite a bit.

Atripla is neither inferior nor superior to several other options. The raised anxiety, if it started post-Atripla, is likely to relate to the efavirenz in this combination, and the simplest way to resolve this is to use something else. Mood changes are common on efavirenz, and sometimes (often even) resolve in time.

I agree with the previous posters, Atripla is known for causing or making existing anxiety worse. I have had mild to moderate social anxiety and OCD for years, way before I started meds. But I have noticed my anxiety has increased since on Atripla, and rarely, even some depression. But overall, it stays in check, and I am going to be going on anti-anxiety meds at some point along with cognitive therapy to help me. If you have an underlying anxiety problem, you should seek help for it. It has taken me years to admit I have that issue and to face it head on. If the Atripla itself is causing it, you can always try a different HIV medication and see if your anxiety eases up. Best wishes xo.
