Rapid test faint line and Elisa 3rd gen negative
« on: July 18, 2017, 06:26:11 pm »
Hey! I'm 27 and I've never practiced a HIV test before, but I ran it cause I was getting very sick lately, I was drinking and doing drugs often, so I decided to check my whole status, I went to this lab around the corner a really kind and nice woman ran the test for me, I got a flu by the time, I didn't even know there were several types of test for HIV, she ran a rapid test and this one came back with a really faint line on the T area so she said there may be a chance, she repeat it with the same sample and same result, she told me it was necessary to run an Elisa 3rd generation but she needed a 24 hrs the next day I showed up and she was really surprise cause she did it also twice same blood sample and came back negative under cutoff, all of this was done at the 8Th weeks after exposure, who should I trust here? I feel like asking my parents for permission to go out and mom says ask your dad, and he says go ahead, and You go out but you don't feel comfortable cause you know your mom was not sure about you going out, that's how I feel, please HELP

To get a better perspective on how to assess your situation, it would be helpful to understand what you think your risk for HIV contraction was.

Thank for the response, it was a one night stand with a girl that swears she's negative, oral and vaginal.

You weren't able to answer (so you sent me a pm) because folks in the "Am I Infected?" forum get three posts only before they must pay for a subscription, which is why it is important to provide as much information as practicable in your first post so one doesn't waste posts by having a moderator need to ask clarification questions.

That written, your pm to me indicated that you had unprotected vaginal sex and since we moderators presume that everyone's partner is HIV positive (for risk assessment purposes), you had a risk for HIV infection (but, keep in mind, even risky encounters rarely result in HIV contraction, but, alas, it does take only one time).

If your oral sex was unprotected (receiving and/or giving), you are not at risk for HIV infection, but could be at risk for other STD's/STI's because of that activity.

To your question, I can't definitively answer, since I did not see the test result and am not in a position to analyze it.  My best assessment, though, is that you are most likely negative, but you will have to work with your healthcare provider to conduct a test that gives a "conclusive" result.

Most experts recommend that testing for HIV antibodies be conducted six weeks past potential exposure, then at 13 weeks past potential exposure for confirmation of the six week results.
