Title: Rupaul-Is she unwell?
Post by: Merlin on December 17, 2008, 10:15:56 pm
Just wondering if there's any latest news on the iconic star. Saw her on Project Runway sometime back and I was really shocked and speechless. The usual rumors but I rather not speculate without her actually publicly telling everyone wat's wrong.. She's a great inspiration and icon and it deeply saddens me to see her so sickly from her usual glam self. :-\
Hope she is doing well. Any updates?

I think Merlin is referring to Ru's stage 4 lipoatrophy -- it's very apparent but I've never heard that she's HIV+, and I have a couple mutual friends with her.  Not that I run around asking about it anyway, but whatever.  It could always be due to something else.

At any rate, lipo doesn't mean you're "unwell".

Hmm, is that channel on satellite? If not then I will surely watch Ms. Ru's show....

Funny I was just googling him/her yesterday cause there was an advert on some site for her new show.

So now I googled Rupaul HIV image and yes the pic is surprising.

More surprising is this thread, however.

Let's be clear - thinking back over the 20+ years she's been on gay raydar, her message and art has always been positive and universal.  I suggest she is an overwhelmingly good icon for the gay world to the straight world - kind of like Freddie Mercury - Rupaul took her extreme otherness, and camp, and talent, and made it comfortable and likeable for Mr. and Mrs. straight next door.  Plus entertained gay audiences very well for years.

So if he/she has HIV and hasn't gone public, not really our place to go nosying around and speculating.

Everyone in this post has been gingerly respectful, so remember, these threads go directly into Search Engine results..

A little respect and privacy therefore...

Not mine, alas. :( Damn you, RCN.

Not that I feel like I'm really missing all that much on LOGO. I've watched a billion times at friends houses and it seems to kind of cater to that middle class white male homosexual crowd most of the time and I can kind of take that or leave it.

That, so called (upper middle class white male homosexual crowd) are the ones with all of the disposable imcome, so, in most Large Urban areas, that kinda the way things are in the LGBT community, The LOGO Channel when it 1st started out, did kinda more caters to Lesbians (female on female story-lines and shows, is a lot of it's programing, that  seems to be more acceptable than Male on Male story-lines and programing, for some reason, I don't know why?) but, it's gotten a lot better in that area of Male to Male story-lines, so, hey I support it, it's LGBT TV on Cable CBS-TV/Viacom/ MTV-networks so, it's not perfect, (The LOGO-channel on cable) but it's a start, I'm lucky to get it )on-Cable-TV, Here in New Mexico

Yes, exactly. I'm just hoping that they start to show more interesting/diverse programs soon. I mean, honestly, you've seen one gay comedy and you've seen them all (and I find them all very tedious).

It would be an excellent medium to start getting those middle class white gays to start paying attention to issues that they have been ignoring.

I have checked the line up and I don't think we get that here. But no surprise they took off my wrestling, Smackdown, to put it on some cheesy satelite station called MyNetwork tv. You would think since Mtv owns part of that Logo channel or whatever that they would put the show on Mtv or what about Bravo.

Good to know then that she is "well". ;)

My asking was purely out of general concern, nothing more/less. Do possibly refrain from interpreting the thread politically incorrectly.  :D

Let's see here, you don't want people "nosying" around yet you googled Rupaul HIV image, speculating, therefore damning her fate to callous search engine results. She's ruined. ::)

As I mentioned Time-Warner Cable in Greensboro recently added a bunch of new channels including Logo. However on the new channel card they sent out in the mail they somehow forgot to print the channel Logo is on, the list goes from 123 to 125. What an unbelievable coincidence the only channel they omitted was the gay channel.

Well, considering where you live  ??? I hardly think it's a real mistake, the fact that they even have that channel in the area you live is suprizing  :o my 1st partner was form Greensboro, NC, and also had family in
Raleigh/Durham, SC, not tryin to dish where you live, but, I've been there before, not a very fun place to live if your out-Gay are if you have AIDS......just sayin  :o

I like living here but there is no way I would live here if I was single. People are generally nice but not always worldly. For example, I was socializing at an awards dinner at work and was introduced to the adult daughter of a coworker. She said chipperly "Oh, you're the homosexual. My mother just loves you!" So adding Logo, but not listing it, is about where we are in terms of gay rights in Greensboro.

They've had LOGO in Cary (Raleigh/Durham suburb where my brother lives there) since it launched five years ago, but then Cary really stands for "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees".

Except for my sister; she's lived in Cary for 12 years, was born in Alabama, and spent most of her life in Raleigh.  From what I've seen of Cary, it's not so bad, as long as one is not concerned about living ITB (inside the Beltline).

I was told when I was just down there for 2 days after Christmas that my nieces' high school is the top scoring academically in the state.  I think it's near the top for sports too.

At least in the part of Cary where I go it's uber-country clubby.  *cough* my niece drives a BMW to school.

The median annual income in Cary is $92,000 with 3.9% living in poverty, Greensboro $42,000 with 16.2 % living in poverty. In Cary 62% of the population have a Bachelor's degree or higher, 34% in Greensboro. Cary is 80% white. People from Greensboro call Cary "Yuppieville" where people from Cary say "Greensboro? Where is that exactly?"

It's actually kind of tired, and I rarely watch it anymore.  The programming is repetitive.  There are lots of other gay, or semi-gay movies out there that they never seem to show and instead seem to play the same stuff over and over.  But whenever I scroll through the guide and see Trick on I watch it just to see John Paul Pitoc in a g-string gyrating.

It used to be good back in 2004/2005, but, now it is geared more toward Gay Women, and a lot less about Gay Men, at least movie wise, but, hey, here in the USA Gay Women themes for some reason seem to be more socially acceptable than Gay themed Men programing..... not to mention the fact that for a Cable channel, it's a little too "G" Rated for TV viewing taste......Golly Gee, I wonder why that is  ???   I like HBO, SHOWTIME and SUNDANCE, at least they don't edit-out all the nudity and language  ::)
