Title: Fish Oil and Prostate Cancer
Post by: WillyWump on July 14, 2013, 01:20:52 pm
What do y'all think about the study(ies) showing a link between fish oil and Prostate Cancer? I think most of us are taking fish oil supplement, and some of us are even on mega doses.

Of course it seems "everything causes something" but this is a bit worrisome, no? Although from what I can glean the effect may be minimal unless you are on mega doses.

I already have an irrational fear of fish oil so I only take a small dose every other day.

These fish oil supplements in which some men are getting mega, mega doses … in our opinion that is probably a little bit dangerous,

...Those with the highest blood levels had a 71 percent higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer, compared to those with the lowest levels. Overall, their risk of any kind of prostate cancer was 44 percent higher.

hmmm...
I just bought some fish oil (2 for 1 sale) a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Thought it would be good for the heart. Now I read that not only is there no significant benefit for the cardiac system but also a higher rate of prostate cancer. ::)
Maybe if I take it with a slice of bacon the 2 kinds of fat will blend and become the next miracle pill.

...seems a little fishy to me...

In all seriousness, I was taking fish oil, vitamins D, C, and B for quite a while.  I now just try to eat healthy and call it good.

If You are afraid of fish oil You can replace it with Organic unrefined Flaxseed oil (contains 50% Omega 3) and Thistle oil (contains 80% Omega 6).
One tablespoon daily is enough or the doses get too high. I don't know if high doses are dangerius, I should google it.

It doesn't surprise me.  It seems like everything is bad for us these days.

On a side note, yesterday I noticed an article that was titled something along the lines of "Cool Trick You Can Do With Mountain Dew!"

It seems if you leave 1/4 amount of the drink in the bottle and add a little vinegar and baking soda you can make your own glow stick.   I did think it was a little cool, but I also wondered what the hell is in this stuff.

I don't know if glow sticks have changed much since I was a kid, but they always told us not to eat them.

I don't know if glow sticks have changed much since I was a kid, but they always told us not to eat them.

From a nutrition class at UC Santa Cruz in the 70's, I remember if you eat a balanced diet, processed vitamins will not be needed.   Recently, I took a list of foods I ate during an entire month to a Nutritionist at UCSF who said my diet was balanced but I should eat more.  Being 20 lbs underweight for 17 years is normal for me.  I do take Vitamin D-3, C-1000, Dry E-400 daily along with my 81mg aspirin.  Then we have the Gabapentin for getting old, the Pravastatin for stress, and lisinopril for cholesterol.  All this just to get old...  Then in addition, the pills that are the star of the Midnight Medication Ceremonies at my house are the Prezista, Truvada and Norvir (which is to be taken with food).  With all these pills, how does the Norvir know if you took it with food because the stomach is full.

I read that prostate problems are common in men with symptoms appearing as early as age 50.  Having had an anal wart removal procedure, I get follow up visits every 6 to 9 months for an exam and my Oncologist who is making movies on location (apologies to Dire Straits) confirms my prostate is healthy.

Being over 50, I am still concerned...  There is a lame cable TV program to sell a prostate product.  There is a panel of men over 50 who are selected to tell their personal stories.  Each one is employed in sales, marketing, and advertising probably from the company selling the product.  One panel member talks of being at a urinal and hearing the interrupted pee stream from the guy next to him and strikes up a conversation about it with the man at the urinal.  The panel finishes, some scientific information is displayed onscreen to find this miracle cure has Zinc in it.  I will probably add Zinc to my supplements.

I did try Omega-3 fish oil, it was recommended to freeze and I finished 1 bottle (years ago)and I never refilled.  The most valuable lesson today is how to make glow sticks with Mountain Dew.     8)  Have the best day

Yes,
Be sure to use the right amount of the BS and vinegar. (I think it would be about 1/2 cup of each ;D.)
PS- Make sure someone takes a pic.

Only a half-cup of BS? Think of all the glow-sticks we could make from all the BS in this forum! ;D

I have an AIDS induced eating disorder which caused an irrational fear of Mountain Dew but I can sling the BS like a truck stop waitress.   8)  Have the best day

I am currently prescribed 4 capsules of Lovaza daily. I am going to discuss this study with my physician on my next appointment.

heh, funny you should mention that. Willy PMd me to ask what forum would be a better fit - Research, Nutrition, or OT. Because it has nothing to do with hiv, it was a toss-up between Research and OT, so I tossed a coin and it was tails - OT.

In hindsight, maybe Research would have been better, because anything goes in OT (to a point folks, to a point).

But it's been fun, though, yes? :)

Willy, if you want to repost this study in Research, you have my blessings this once. M'kay?

You're lucky he didn't wake up as you tied that to his paw.  You should have tied a glow stick ( or a modified mountain dew bottle) to him so he'd be safe at night.
