Viral Loads can spike and mean nothing.  Also you are in the margin of error for the VL test.  So I think you will be fine!

Hi Garry

Sorry to hear about the blip in your Viral Load. I am almost certain that 48 could just be a minor blip and you will become undetectable very soon again. I don't think you should focus on that number so much. In Sept when you get your new blood results you will see whether their is a rise and then perhaps you and your doctor can talk about options in either continuing with your regimen or switching. Glad your CD4 counts rose and please focus on the good things, it will take you a long way.

Garry,

Most viral load tests only measure down to 50. Anything under 50 would be reported as undetectable. Is your lab using a super-sensitive test?

In any event, viral blips are pretty common. I've had a number of them, and the subsequent test always went back to undetectable.

I know it's hard not to worry about these blips, but I think you'll be fine.

Move the goalposts why don't you...

Less than 50 is still "undetectable" in routine clinical care in the UK.

I know my VL tests down below 50, how much, who knows?  The month before I was undetectable I was 42.  As for your situation, I would say it is blip and not to worry, now if it had spiked to 4000, then maybe, but really, nothing to worry to about at this point.  However, since I am a worrier I would not be able to take my own advice .... take care!

Same here in NZ...in fact (correct me if I'm wrong Newt) a <50 is an undetectable result no matter where you live.

Cokaine...if Gaz has a <50 result then his meds are working, no need to switch.

Could be a new super-sensitive machine, usually under 50 is undetectable, but we're seeing hyper sensitive devices now and I wouldn't be surprised if undetectable people get redetected. No sweat, 48 VL and 416 CD4 is excellent :)

You are undetectable. Being under 50 copies is undetectable and some tests still consider undetectable below 400 copies.

Hi Garry,

Yes, you can relax. A viral load less than 50 is considered undetectable. (Your other results look good as well.)

If the cut-off point is 50, I wonder why they are even providing results less than that.  If a VL of 48 is detectable, what number would that test use as undetectable?  48 sounds pretty good to me, actually.  Tell ya' what... I'll trade you my VL for yours!  ;D  I sure hope I can attain the 'undetectable' status with my next labs.

Hiya Garry,
I haven't heard from you in a month of Sundays. Your labs are still all fabulous as the reporting standard considers anything under 50 copies as an undetectable value.
Wish you were around more, I miss your wit. Hope you continue with the good trends, and wish you the best of health, and happiness!  :-*

Thanks for the comments , i was just a little unnerved about not being undetectable. The doctors practice has been upgraded to a centre for infectiology and now works closely with the university so they are using more sensitive tests and 40 is the cut off point now

iŽlljust try to chill and lisa iŽll try to pop in more often just or you

all the best

Hey Garry,

I had a blip in my viral load in January. It turned out it was just that - a blip. It returned to undetectable in March. I know how upsetting that can be, but I have high hopes it is just an oopsie for you and you will be fine.

Good to see you here again, by the way.

HUGS,

You know I didn't even get my CD4 on last visit due to a mix up with the labs, and my doctor wasn't worried.  So, I am sure that this is a blip.  I am glad everything else is normal.  Good luck to ya...  D
