HIV test and unfortunate cocaine user
« on: March 28, 2011, 02:08:22 pm »
Please could someone give me some advice.  I am a married man with a 3 year old son and I have been going. Rash after a one off incident of protected sex with a 21 year old student.  Since the event I have had a number of HIV tests which have included the multiplex test at 17 days and a HIV duo at 28 days and then HIV duo at 8 weeks.  At various stages I have had the standard nhs HIV antibody test and total I have had 12 tests the latest being at 5.5 month Mark, all negative.  Unfortunately I have been a cocaine user casual for a number of years now and since the event I have been using once twice a week.  I am really concerned that my tests are false negatives as the cocaine has prevented my body from producing HIV antibodies.  I have stopped using cocaine after counselling and will continue not use.  Please can you advise if cocaine use would stop HIV antibodies being produced and is my 5.5 HIV test conclusive.  I have been itching all over my body ever since the incident, have spots on my chest and buttocks and have a really White tounge with pink spots on it.  I have also noticed that my nose and cheek under eyes appears red and flush all of the time.  Please please please advise and help.

You never had an exposure and you didn't need testing.

As long as you had protected intercourse then you were well protected against the sexual transmission of HIV.

You need to discuss your symptoms with your doctor. They are not in anyway HIV specific which is no a surprise since you haven't had an HIV exposure.

This is not an HIV situation. There's no need for further concern nor any need for HIV testing.

Thankyou for your feedback but I feel so I'll all of the time and continually itchy over tine last 5-6 months.  You say I wasn't at risk but say I was at risk.  I have an anal fissure and I'm concerned her vaginal juices ,ay have ran into my open wound.  With my previous question in mind would cocaine use damage my immune system to the extent that it wouldnt produce HIV antibodies.  Please please advise

Thankyou to everybody

HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host (unlike many bacteria or fungi, which may do so under suitable conditions), except under laboratory conditions; therefore, it does not spread or maintain infectiousness outside its host.

Man, you are just mixing up a bunch of details in a way which make no sense whatsoever in terms of HIV science. Nothing you have described would have put you at risk for HIV transmission, including an anal fissure and vaginal juices. HIV is a fragile virus and is not transmitted in that manner. Period.

The only confirmed means of transmitting HIV sexually are through unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. As long as you consistently use condoms for those activities you will be well protected against HIV transmission sexually.

And no, cocaine use would not affect your immune system's ability to create antibodies.

This is not an HIV situation. Period.

Itchy,

You have tested conclusively hiv negative over this incident. Your last test was at 5.5 months and the window period for a conclusive result is only three months. Cocaine use does not affect the window period.

You do not have hiv - and that's no surprise since you didn't have a risk in the first place.

See a doctor about your itching. It has nothing to do with hiv.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
