Cause for concern??
« on: July 17, 2007, 08:45:40 pm »
Hello,

I am a guy who had a one night stand with a woman I met at the bar. We had unprotected vaginal and oral sex, both gave and received. This was early Friday morning. On Saturday evening I got a sore throat but that was all. By Sunday night my throat hurt, I had chills, a low grade fever (around 100) and felt weak and my body ached. I called my GP on Monday morning and went in for a strep test because I had white pus in the back of my throat as well as having loose stool. My strep test was negative, he thinks it is a combo of allergies and a viral infection like adenovirus but did a throat swab to check for chlamydia or another bacterial STD. I actually talked to the girl yesterday and I could tell it was a one night thing, I asked her if she was on the pill and she said yes and I guess she could tell I was hunting around a little and she said she was clean, which obviously I know could be complete BS but she seemed sincere (if she even knows obviously). Anyway, I still feel like crap today and I DO have something wrong with me, it is probably just an upper respiratory virus, however does this in anyway sound like ARS? I believe it is way to soon for that to happen IF I had caught HIV so I find some comfort in that at least. Just a little reassurance would help me out, I know I need a boot up my ass for not using protection, to much alcohol, I pulled a stupid move I do admit.

So is this to soon for it to be ARS?

I will test here in the future because I am sexually active.

Thanks for help.

First of all, don't use the word clean. It's offensive to those of us that are HIV positive. Second, symptoms or lack of, has no basis for HIV diagnosis. Third, even if your symptoms were used, yours came on to early to be a sign of anything STDs or HIV. Alcohol and sex don't mix. You did put yourself at risk and will need to test 12/13 post last possible exposure.

Sorry I never meant it to be derogatory towards anyone, it was just what she said so that is what I typed. So this sickness I have right now is to early for any ARS symptoms?

Yes, but the thing is to forget about the symptoms. HIV has no specific symptoms. Test at 12/13 weeks and get your conclusive result.

Can I get someone to humor me on a question. Since female to male infection is low, and the likelihood that the woman I had sex with is most likely HIV negative, are my chances of testing negative at 12 weeks most likely extremely good? This is just bugging the hell out of me and causing me to lose time at work thinking about this deal, some reassurance would help me out a lot. I wouldn't be so concerned if it wasn't for my fever, night sweats, sore throat etc. the timing of my infection just really sucks!

HIV, isn't a chance game. You will know your result when you have tested.

Well finally some good news...I guess! My GP's office called today and I have strep but it is an uncommon form, group g so a culture was needed to detect it. So now I got some antibiotics and hopefully can put my "symptoms" behind me.

need,

You still need to test as you have had unprotected intercourse.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

A test three months after your last incident of unprotected intercourse will be conclusive.
