HIV Meds Co-Pays with Aetna Health Insurance
« on: April 16, 2012, 01:19:19 pm »
I have just accepted a position with a company which has Aetna Health Insurance for its employees. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the copays might be for my three HIV medications:

Complera
Reyataz
Norvir

From what I can tell Aetna has a five tier drug copay and the top tier (Number 5) copay appears quite price. Thanks!

don't forget to always check the pharma sites for patient assistance and/or copay help. there's no sense to not take the reductions and patient assistance they offer to make sure your daily regimen is actually affordable  ;)

oh, and copays will probably differ based on insurance companies and plans so you might not get the exact info you were asking for ;)

complera info here in this blog http://williamlarsonpharmd.wordpress.com/2011/09/14/co-pay-savings-for-hiv-medication-part-2-complera/

maybe someone else will chime in about the norvir or a better link for complera

I have Aetna and pay $60 copay for my Atripla - but that is picked up by the Patient Assistance Program - so in essence no copay for the time being.

Hey Greencarnation- I actually used to work for Aetna so I'm familiar with your question.

Your copay/coinsurance amounts are actually determined by each employer that offers the insurance. Aetna just does what the companies want and so one person may have a $60 copay and another person may have $120 copay for the same drug for the same amount of pills just because they work for different companies.

I think of it like going to a restaurant- the company picks only the items it wants and then sets the prices of them to some extent based on how much they're willing to pay. Hope that makes sense and helps!
6/2011- Tested Negative
1/2012- Tested Positive- CD4 180/VL 105,000
4/2012- CD4- 129/VL 29,000
4/2102- Started Atripla
11/2012- CD4- 157/VL 40

The best way to find this out for based on your companies agreement with Aetna is to log onto Aetna's website and check there. Once you've signed in as a member, it will tell you based on your companies agreement what your co-pays will look like.
Each company has different agreements so your company may offer different rates/copays than another company.
Hope that helps.

I'm sure I am.  I used the copay assistance program offered for Atripla but seeing as this is my first week on the drug and my doctor won't write me more than a 3 month script until she sees the results of my blood work I opted to wait on signing up for copay assistance
