medication switched (Isentress, Prezista, Viread, norvir)
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:16:57 pm »
Hi all,
I seen my doc today and we decided to switch my medication mostly due to my feet issue to see if the medication I was on was a contributing factor.  Also i was tired of the Sustiva side effects.

This is the combination he wants to try advising the Emitriva in the Atripla 'could' be the culprit with the feet/leg problems which is why we are bypassing the Truvada.  Even-though its more pills I'm pretty happy of getting rid of the Sustiva side-effects.

Anyone taking this combo?  he says that the Prezista/Norvir may cause some loose stools in the beginning.  He says i can take them all at once in the morning and an additional Isentress before bed.

Any comments would be welcomed.

I'm on all of those and find them very trouble free. If you get any diarrhea it should be minimal. Just use some OTC imodium if you need it.

Thanks Miss P.

Is there a Norvir co-pay assistance program.  My doctor give me one for the other 3, but didn't get anything for the Norvir.

I sure hope this works for me and that i'm one of the 5-10 percent folks that have the CNS problems from the Atripla.  Its taken a little more convincing my HIV doc to switch because he is not for certain that it has to do with the Atripla even-though i laid the research right in front of him today.  Even My neurologist thought it might be a good idea to switch it if at all possible, so I did.

I don't know if my doc is just getting tired of practicing or what, but he doesn't seem to have much sympathy to my feelings like he once used to be.  he keeps saying that its not uncommon for hIV to cause neuropathies and for some folks they are minor and some they are debilatating and have to be on high powered pain medications for it.  My neurologist thinks the oppossite of him thinking that HIV itself with the amount of my CD4 and VL, this should  not cause the neuropathy, so its a back and forth between two doctors with no particular solutions as of yet. Its like having to boyfriends fighting over you and I'm the one that keeps getting punched in the face.

Hey Mikey, I hope you get it straightened out.

Why didnt your doctor switch you to something more "traditional"? Such as Epzicom/Istentress?  I understand dumping the Sustiva but why did he jump to an NRTI sparing regimen so quickly?  It seems like you could stick to something more traditional while still making a change.  Just a thought, I'm not second guessing just concerned for ya.

Perhaps because Emtriva (FTC) and Epivir (3TC) are similar enough to be equal in terms of the risk of neuropathy, even if this is rare on these drugs. This effectively rules out Truvada (tenofovir/FTC) and Epzicom (abacavir/3TC).

Miss P, Newt, or anyone taking these meds,

Is it advisable to take them all at once? or should i take the Prezista/norvir first, then couple hours take the isentress and viread.  Or does it matter?  I feel like my body may go into shock with all these at one time..lol.

Take them all at once. And I do it all in one handful, with a single gulp of water, like a Big Girl :)

Practice makes perfect -- I throw all of my pills in a small juice glass, then heave them in the back of my throat, then swallow a large shot of water. It will become really simple, I promise.

hehe....yeah i took them all this morning and one more isentress tonight.  I didn't notice much or any side-effects thru most of the day except about an hour or two before i left work i started getting a little nausea, but all and all everything went pretty smoothly so far

I skipped my Atripla last night because I was starting these meds today.  Honestly when i woke up this morning at 530am for work I actually had a clear mind, I forgot what that felt like.  I was more awake this morning than I have been in a while.

Did you ever gain the freshmen 15 when you started Atripla?  This could be a welcome beginng to a new svelte physique after the Atripla bloating.

I'm sure it's only temporary.   Just think of all the crap when you started Atripla and how most of it went away.

If its not.  What a great excuse to begin a regimen of medical marijuana!!!

hi bug,
I wish Texas had a medical Mary Jane law here, i'd definitely be on it.   lol.  Yeah i had put on a few pounds since starting Atripla, so not completely a bad thing.  I suppose its saving me some money on grocery bill or eating out rather.  lol.  i'm guessing it will get better.

Too easy Philly.

As for Atripla causing CNS side effects.  Your doctor was really balking at this?  I mean it's pretty universal, just in some people they are so apparent and disruptive to daily living that it MUST be changed.  For me it was worth it for a once a day regimen.  2 and a half years late, I'm pretty sure Complera is going to be in my future and with a quickness.

Hi all,
Is it feasible to take these medications minus the Viread? I've heard that some folks just take their Viread every other day instead of everyday.  I guess the reason I asked and didn't really second guess my doctor, but was just wondering if the Isentress and the PI/norvir is really all i need.
