Am i infected?
« on: September 08, 2007, 10:50:39 pm »
A little over two months ago. i fooled around with a guy i had known for about four months. bottom line is that we ended up naked. we not not have penetrative sex . however his  penis grazed the inner lips of my vagina for literally a second. there was no pre cum nor semen. Please assess my risk. he was not wearing a condom. Help i am really scared and i think my paranoia is producing symptoms. i have muscle aches all over my body. i went for a test a week ago and it came back negative, that was a little over two months after my possible exposure.should i go for another test???

Cam,

No there is no risk of HIV transmission from what you describe. You don't need to test again. Please take the time to read our Welcome Thread and follow the links to our Lessons to learn more about how HIV is and is not transmitted.

OK well they say that if semen comes into contact with your mucosal tissue you can get infected and that is the most common mode of transmission. So i am worried still. are the inner lips of the vagina considered to be mucosal tissue or is that within the vagina.please clarify. i swear i don't think i want to see another penis anytime soon

cam,

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. When hiv finds itself outside the body, very small changes in temperature, moisture content and pH levels all damage the outer covering of the virus. Hiv needs this outer covering to be intact and undamaged in order for it to latch on to a very few, very specific type of cells. These types of cells are NOT found in your vaginal lips.

You did NOT have a risk for hiv infection. If you did, we'd tell you and recommend a conclusive test at three months. You do NOT need further testing as you did not have a risk in the first place.

You ARE hiv negative.

Stay that way by using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

cam,

Your plan to remain a virgin is fine, just remember when you do start having sex to make sure your man is using a condom. Condoms prevent hiv infection.

Cam,

See your doctor about your aches and pains. You do not have hiv.
