My Pet Virus... The Gift
« on: December 18, 2006, 04:26:15 pm »
I cant decide if I should buy this book for my sister and my mother as a xmas present.  They know I have HIV and are supportive and loving just thought they may like to see what its about.  Both are avid readers.

I admit I have NOT read this book and would be buying a copy for myself as well.  Any thoughts guys?

Please keep in mind the sick sense of humor I have and the way I deal with things.  I dont want to give them an HIV 101 type of book, just something to shed a little light on things.  Does this book do that?

Regards,

Santa's Well Hung Elf

I think it would be a good one to get depending on what you are looking for.  I picked up a copy at Borders and it was funny as hell.  In fact, my coworker and I were reading it at a slow shift at the lab and we did a whole 12 hour overnight shift and had it read.  I have developed a rather sick sense of humour myself over the years as I've been positive.  It won't give you HIV 101 or anything as that isn't it's purpose, but it gives a refreshing perspective unlike so many pessimistic HIV books/memoirs that are out there.  It really is nice to laugh about HIV (as sick as that may sound to some) once in a while.  But it will not answer their questions about HIV itself--it mainly tells his experiences, but it also gives the perspective of humour and makes it more hopeful, so it depends on what you are looking for.

Hey AcinKC...

That sounds like it would be a good idea in order to share more of the meaning of HIV/AIDS. It can be a beneficial thing.

It's a good book. I really liked it.  Great sense of humor that I think you and your family will appreciate.  And he's straight so that's also in your favor, sortaifyouknowwhatimeanjean.

He talks about his life growing up, coming of age, basically fucking around because he was always told not to plan for anything so he didn't.  Look what happened.

I think your mother will relate to his mother too.  The old man is pretty funny too.

Definitely a stocking stuffer....
