Arthritis and HIV
« on: January 01, 2011, 10:41:07 pm »
I hope I am in the right room.  Several months ago after years of off and on again pains I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis- a fancy name for arthritis that starts in your spine and can attack other joints and tendons.  Please no sympathy's or sorry's- I am looking for anybody in the room that is also dealing with arthritis and treatment as a POZ person.
I am on Celebrex and have had to take two different prednisone packs for flare ups-  My doctor is well aware that the strongest meds reduce your immune system so those are out.
Thank you in advance for your help, I have always this place to be a most welcoming place and get help every time I come here.
cheers and happy new year ladies and gentlemen.

Happy New Year.  Well, I have acute arthritis of the hips, both sides, but I am hyper-vigilant in keeping my weight down, eating right and exercising by body building with weights and walking/running.  I also take Aleve in the mornings, sometimes in the afternoon, to keep the inflammation/pain down, which works well so for me. Also, I take Glucosamine and Chondroitin to maintain healthy flexible joints.  One last point, I have stop eating eggs for I read somewhere that if one has an allergy to it, it may cause harm to the soft tissue of the joints.  I also have slightly elevated cholesterol, so avoiding eggs is a plus.

I do have a friend who takes Indocin, which is like a NSAID, and he claims it works great for him.

Cheers

I'd totally agree with what Red Dragon said. I don't know what the Indocin is but I'm going to look it up.
I think Fish Oil is also good as an anti-inflammitory and has megadoses of Vitamin D, which helps alot of things. I have been diagnosed with Hughes Syndrome or Antiphospholipid Syndrome, which is also a fancy name for Arthritis. It is considered to be an autoimmune disorder, which means something like your body mistakenly attacks your good cells. Anyway, I have been advised to seek out an anti-inflammatory diet, fruits and vegetables are helpful and try to avoid foods with MSG-monosodiumglutomate. Maybe try a Google search on Anti-inflammatory diet but like Red Dragon said, Aleve is great or ibuprofen works well too. by the way, I love Prednizone. I wish I could take it all the time because it makes me feel so good. lol But docs said it lowers immune system so can't take it. I should also start taking the Glucosamine and Chondroitin for healthier bones and connective tissues.  :) I'd be interested in any progress or new discoveries that help you.

I am on Celebrex already, it was the first thing that worked.  I have to be very careful not to walk too much or my heels get inflamed.  can't sit for too long or it hits  the back or the heels again when I try to stand.  What a pain the ass.
I will definitely check out all the reccomendations offered.  Thank you.
There is a good amount of medicl information available on the web about the connection between HIV and arthritis.  What is concerning me the most right now is the fact that I have never been able to bet my CD4 above 360-  diagnosed in 2007 with a count of 134.  The counstant low hum of pain is very tiring and I am wiped out when I get home from work.  I have heel lift/ supports in my shoes which has been a god send.  I guess I will have to just keep checking back to see who else contributes and if I find any info to share with you all.
Cheers!
