Title: Fifth Anniversary of Iraq invasion
Post by: Oceanbeach on March 20, 2008, 01:44:26 am
I got a message today from San Francisco saying since today was the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war, there would be burnt-out hippies and unreconstructed anarchists shouting slogans and stopping traffic.

Instead of going to the city, I marched on Federated Department stores, Macy's Division, Coddingtown Branch.  Armed with only a store card and a Star Rewards card offering an additional 20% off the already posted sale items.  Shouting slogans such as "Down with Prices, Down with Pants", I located 2 pair of Levi in my size.  ;D  Oddly enough, 1 pair was made in Mexico and the other in Indonesia and San Francisco proudly emblasoned on the logo.  Also, found 5 casual shirts called American Rags, in my size and under 5 bucks each, made in Bangladesh.   ;D  Have the best day

Wednesday was the official 5th Anniversary date of the war. Vigils in NYC were rained out.

Scheduled for today (Saturday) on 14th Street in Manhattan (a major thoroughfare) is a river-to-river (East River to Hudson) demonstration. Gathering at 11 am. At noon the crowd will begin converge and walk to Union Square Park where at 1pm a bell will begin to toll. There will be photos of those who have died as well people carrying military gear that belonged to them. The overall tone is expected to be solemn.

' Only 26.9 percent of those polled expressed optimism for the year ahead. Conversely, 85 percent described the situation in Iraq as "bad or very bad." . . .

A majority of the women respondents said violence against women is increasing and respect for women's rights is fading. . ."

Five years after the outbreak of the war in Iraq, the humanitarian situation in most of the country remains among the most critical in the world. Because of the conflict, millions of Iraqis have insufficient access to clean water, sanitation and health care. The current crisis is exacerbated by the lasting effects of previous armed conflicts and years of economic sanctions.

Despite limited improvements in security in some areas, armed violence is still having a disastrous impact. Civilians continue to be killed in the hostilities. The injured often do not receive adequate medical care. Millions of people have been forced to rely on insufficient supplies of poor-quality water as water and sewage systems suffer from a lack of maintenance and a shortage of engineers.

Many families include people who have been forced by the conflict to flee their homes, leaving those left behind with the daily struggle of trying to make ends meet. A sustained economic crisis marked by high unemployment further aggravates their plight. '

I don't think anyone is "shitting" on the men and women who are fighting this war. The ones that need to be "shit on" are those that got us into this mess in the first fucking place. A majority of Americans want this war "Over". Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should all be tried for treason, and hung with the same rope that was used on Saddam.

As someone who served in the Army during the Vietnam War, I had no problems with anyone protesting that war, which killed over 50,000 Americans. We need to get the troups home. Let that part of the world take care of or destroy itself as far as I am concerned.

I asked my father a Veteran of WWII and the Korean War and a career Naval Officer what he thought of people protesting this war. He said he may not agree but he risked his life in two wars to preserve that right for all Americans. He said talk to the veterans not those who never served.

I don't believe that the Iraqi people were all that happy to be under Saddam's control do you?

By the same token, Russians weren't exactly thrilled with the Tsars but what followed the revolution wasn't exactly wonderful either.

That of course is neither here nor there.  The fact is that the reasons for invading for thin from the start and both America and Iraq has suffered the consequences of a terrible foreign policy blunder.

The "war" will be an unending story....most Americans/ Europeans  even our Australian friends don't understand the way things really operate in that part of the world.....the "tribal" mentality rules over anything else......when your "tribe" has power they see no need to negotiate or cooperate....they simply wait you out and retaliate for even the slightest provocation......this is the overwhelming situation in the entire Middle East..true of the Israelis, Palestinians,Jordanians,Egyptians  and so on...... you don't see any of the   "friendly" Arab/Muslim countries springing to action to help because they understand about the tribal issue.....until one is so dominant or the other side just gives up there will be constant struggle.......the Americans or anyone else being there doesn't really matter it will not change the balance of "power" among the tribes....we need to and should be looking for the most graceful exit we can find...the troops have done a great job but further"military" progress is a daydream..it is now primarily a sense of Political will for the Iraqi's to get their act together.....
all that heartbreaking stuff about no water and electricity is primarily caused by the locals...they steal the components, they blow up the pipelines and when new equipment arrives someone black markets as much as they can and nothing gets fixed......If they are really upset by by the lack of these daily necessities then they ( the Iraqis) need to start cracking down on the locals.....as far as women's rights goes...that is not exactly new news in that part of the world...most of the locals consider women property of their family/ husband,,,,,,the American/ European idea of women's rights is not accepted or even understood by the tribes....
I think it is really time to show a positive move and start pulling back further and further from the "fight..."  force the politicos to take on the issues and be there to help if/when it turns to crap.....

Protesting the war in the United states may make some people feel good but protesting the action/ inaction of the Iraqis would be more useful

As reticent as I am to contradict you Nick, I will.

Australia has troops in the field in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Notably our small contingent of combat forces will be withdrawn from Iraq by the middle of this year, but we continue to strengthen our forces in Afghanistan.

I myself have a close relative serving Afghanistan as we speak. Seeing active combat in a Royal Australian Regiment as it happens. He chose to serve and understands full well the risks he faces.

More generally Australia has large populations of migrant Iraqis, Iranians, Jordanians, Palestinians, Eqyptians, and other people from the middle east and have had since the mid 1970's, We also have large populations of muslim and christian Sudanese as well.

So yes, we do understand.

I have a cousin who is an officer in the Marine Corp. The last time his family saw him was Thanksgiving of 2006. He's in some type of special forces that allows for no contact of any kind with friends or family while he is overseas or on duty. He participated in the initial invasion of Afghanistan and continues to serve somewhere, though no one in his family knows where. I could not be more proud of him or anyone else serving or who has served this country. As a Navy brat I have nothing but respect for the military and what it stands for.

That said, I am against this illegal war. I find the loss of innocent lives on both sides immoral.
