I topped a guy bareback and now I'm a bit scared.
« on: September 23, 2024, 05:36:11 pm »
Two weeks ago I went for a waxing and it turned into my topping the guy. I had an immediate moment of clarity and stopped what I was doing, apologized and that was that. I told him that I've been in a relationship and that I couldn't continue. He was kind and calm and told me that he's been on Prep for the last 6 months, tests regularly and is negative. I called my doctor anyway and within 24 hours I was on Biktarvy.

Was I at risk? Was getting on PEP at 24 hours the right thing to do? Can my partner and I have sex while I'm finishing PEP?

Hiya,

You had brief condomless intercourse, it's an HIV risk and you started PEP.

So PEP is highly effective and I fully expect you will be fine, but test to confirm your HIV status six weeks after finishing PEP with a blood draw (lab) HIV antibody test. A non-reactive result at that time would rarely change, and retesting at three months is generally unnecessary. Also, get an STI screening whilst you are getting your HIV testing done.

Even if he tested on the day you met it wouldn't mean anything to you due to the window period and a few other reasons. His claimed PrEP usage is also irrelevant to you.

You can, PEP does not cause sexual dysfunction, but is it wise or safe for your partner would be a different story, use condoms.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV and get vaccinated against HPV, Hepatitis A & B.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier-acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; testing is the only way to know.

Kind regards

Jim
