Question about numbers
« on: December 14, 2008, 11:15:13 pm »
My partner was diagnosed with HIV and AIDS Dementia Complex in June 2006.

He was started on sustiva, emtriva and viread and has been on them ever since.

At diagnosis he had a CD4 count of 39 and CD4% of 9% (don't know what the VL was).

After 12 months he had reached  110 and 11% with VL undetectable.

After 18 months he was at 130 and 13% and still undetectable.

... and the numbers at 24 and 30 months were essentially the same - CD4 in the 130's and CD4% at 13%.

OK, so I realize that everyone is different, but is this "typical" - ie CD4 rises quite a bit initially but then maxes out at what it still quite a low level?

Hey md,
No expert here but 'typical' seems to be elusive at times. It's easy to play the numbers game. Many of us have joined in, including myself. Just judging from posters' profiles here, our numbers seem to be all over the place regardless of treatment or general health, sometimes sluggish, static or off the charts.

If able to attend your partner's medical visits, discuss your concerns with your partner and his physician. My physician indicates that even with effective treatment, i.e und VL, CD4 can be a slow climb. I continue to search for studies, repeatedly ask at each visit, and patiently wait for my body to make more.  Here's hoping your partner will see his CD4 count steadily increase.
