Hi girls,
As I told you in my previous posts, I am planning to have a baby in the near future. I started on Kaletra and Combivir one week ago - I feel good, no side effects so far :)
However, I have been doing some reasearch and there is one thing bothering me, which I don't understand: why the official standards recommend Combivir (AZT+3C) as the preffered regimen in pregnancy, when it is a pregnancy cathegory C drug - compared to (for ex) Truvada - which is cathegory B (less risky). Also, why do they recommend Kaletra (which is cat. C), on the same level as Viramune (which is cat. B??!!!
•Pregnancy category B means that animal studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. "It is most likely safe in pregnancy." HIV-positive women who become pregnant should discuss the benefits and possible side effects of HIV treatment to help protect their babies from HIV
• Pregnancy category C means that animal studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks. HIV-positive women who become pregnant should discuss the benefits and possible side effects of HIV treatment to help protect their babies from HIV
It would seem obvious to me that the first recommendation should be the drugs in cathegory A and B..., not C...Please advice.
Also, what do you think about the combination I am on?
